Recreation of a dream
Nov 2014
Events lately have made me think a lot about what it is to be a woman. Especially what it means to be a woman artist. I am constantly looked at as strictly a sex object or an object of desire. Everyday is a new unwanted and unwarranted comment. Either from classmates, coworkers, or complete strangers. Women are expected to censor themselves and when we don't then the comments start. In the past week I have been called a "slut" by a classmate for showing nude work during a photo class. A coworker made a very demeaning sexual remark about me which stemmed from my art. A stranger in my work place today told me after seeing me he had to go home and change his pants. These are the type of things that a lot of women hear every single day. Representing my own body in a way in which I feel comfortable is seen to be a bad behavior and immoral. It's honestly suffocating. To stifle my art, something that is made with intent, conceptual thinking, and passion is truly horrible and disgusting. Things like this make me only want to work harder and keep creating work. As terrible as it is to receive these types or remarks I feel like I am doing at least a small something right to make people feel such a strong emotion.
