I think they've deleted the tag now, but one person tagged my post about technical vs. nontechnical language with 'good post obnoxiously written' and I just love that phrase. I could not possibly sum up what I try to do here better than that. I'm going to make it my blog title.
I want to be extremely clear that I am not dunking on this person or being sarcastic. I love that phrase. And they are not wrong.
The thing about data centers is that there's absolutely no reason to build them close to places where people live. The world needs some data centers (how many? that's more debatable). But data centers do not require a lot of staff to run. They require electricity and water and space, but they do not require very many people. No kind of building is a better candidate for the middle of fucking nowhere. So why are they trying to build them in peoples' backyards?

I recognize the value of audio guides in tourist sites/museums. I even recognize the value of phone-based audio guides, since they make it cheaper and easier for a museum to have a large variety of languages. But if you a) cut information from signage to put on an audio guide or b) let people use the damn things WITHOUT HEADPHONES I will not be best pleased.
First, it goes without saying that cutting info from non-audio media is not great for anyone who is hearing impaired. And that's much more important than my petty grievances.
But I still have my petty grievances. And they are that I can't read the damn sign if I can hear 3 versions of the same audio guide playing VERY LOUD right next to me.

A CBC News investigation found a number of Facebook accounts run by people overseas impersonating real Albertan separatists.
You might think, based on the volume of her Facebook posts, that Nieta Aqila is an Albertan who supports separation. "I signed the Alberta independence petition" because "Canada is not a great country anymore," an account in her name wrote in a popular Facebook group called Alberta Independence that promotes the movement and has more than 100,000 members. In another post, Aqila said she was harassed and had rocks thrown at her as she canvassed for petition signatures. The account's posts have generated thousands of reactions, comments and shares in recent months as the issue heated up.

The problem with a lot of online discourse about literacy (in North America) is that a lot of people do not or cannot differentiate the claim 'there has been a recent non-trivial dip in (US) literacy rates, which is concerning because otherwise literacy has been increasing for as long as we've been able to measure it' and the claim 'literacy is at a historic low'. Those are not even vaguely the same thing! Only one of them is true!
Something bad is happening with literacy now. We need to do something about it. That does not mean that current literacy is worse than it was in the '50s. We can be concerned about the present without inventing an idealized past to compare it to.
And if it doesn't seem like that's the case - if it seems to you that people in general are way less literate than they were in the '70s, say - consider that until very recently, unless a person with no or low literacy was within earshot of you or a news reporter, they would have no way to communicate with you at all.

Interviews with hockey players are fantastic, because it is a complex game that can be spoken about at length, but during the intermission they'll find the Wettest player imaginable on the losing team and for thirty seconds they'll ask them things like "what do you need to do to get more pucks in the net?" And the player (panting, haunted behind the eyes) says something like "well, we've got to get them in there"

It'd be a lot easier to critique fandom-types who treat characters as interchangible bundles of tropes and aesthetics that can be slotted into any stock plot without changing it if professional game writers weren't doing all the same shit
I mean, I still can critique them. On the grounds that if you're taking your model of storytelling from nostalgia-bait gatcha- or gatcha-adjacent shovelware, you probably should read a book or something. But I can't exactly call it 'unprofessional'.
