I reblogged this
October 26
Last night, I went to the Lantern Festival, which happens once a year in Chiang Mai. This is a religious holiday to honor Buddha. For the event, thousands of people gather in a field and light a lantern on which they have written a wish. Once the flame is lit, the lantern slowly drifts up into the sky where it meets the thousands of other lanterns that have been released. This event was incredible, and far exceeded my expectations. During the ceremony, the sky resembles an ocean of jellyfish that are floating up to the surface of the water. The beauty of it was almost overwhelming! Definitely an amazing way to spend my last night in Chiang Mai.
I am writing this on a plane from Chiang Mai to Yangon, Burma. I’m so excited for what is next, but I am also sad to have left Monet (she is living in Chiang Mai). I’m realizing that this is going to be the toughest part of backpacking through so many different places: constantly needing to say goodbye to people I have just started to build a connection with. That being said, I know that meeting Monet was a unique occurrence and I’m pretty certain I have made a new best friend for life.
