Giant manta rays are the largest rays in the world with wingspans up to 29 feet (8.8 m) wide and weights up to 5,300 pounds (2,404 kg).

Giant manta rays have the biggest brains of any fish studied so far. They use that brain power to learn, exercise their memory, distinguish between objects and even recognize themselves in the mirror.

I have done this and it is the most spiritual experience of my life. They are gentle and playful creatures.

It was a tour thing in Hawaii where they took you out in a bay and set up spot lights shining up from the bottom, and we all held onto surfboards with lights shining down. This attracted the plankton which the rays then showed up to eat. There were 8 of them I think, doing vertical loops in the rays of light to catch more plankton. One of them passed within inches of my face, which was only scary because you’re not supposed to touch them.
