â Ready, little bro? â Sheâs beanie-bare, but itâs in her hands, both of them twisting beneath it in a HIDDEN show of anxiety. Sheâd never met Joshâs doctor before, but sheâd heard he was⌠quite the character. Why, suddenly, he wanted a session with both of them in the same room was⌠kind of freaking her out a little. But she didnât need to let any of that show on her face. Beth had to be STRONG, for her brother. That way heâd know there was nothing to worry about.
â Hey, you wanna get slushies on the way back? Get mom to yell at us about getting sick? â Itâs no tradition; theyâve never done this before, but she remembers being young, and sticking their candy-colored tongues out at each-other like a bunch of gremlins.
&. @joshxwcshington LIKED.
â totally. â he doesnât have to SMIRK to know its a lie. bethâs always known him, better than anyone. better than their parents. better than dr. hill. thatâs probably why this sessionâs happening. heâs pretty sure the old dude can READ minds. heâs known all of joshâs secrets before he even OPENED his mouth.  he hated it.  â i was born ready. iâm josh fucking washington. â his ron swanson impression needs work, but itâs better than telling the truth. truth is, heâs nervous. judging by the way her hands are twisting the HELL out of her beanie, she feels the same. this is a familiar song and dance, at least for him. melt down, go to therapy, take medication, repeat. itâs not the first, it wonât be the last. itâs just FUCKED that now his sister is being dragged into things. Â
he pauses, as if he has to think about it.  â fuck yeah. â his smile is genuine this time. whenever the washingtons had gone on family trips, usually on the weekends when they were little â when bob had still had time, the gas station near their house had always had slushies in the back. heâd always gotten the red ones. he couldnât remember the last time theyâd gone down there.  â ... but youâre PAYING. â

âthe police might disagree with you, buddy. ASSAULT charges are a bitch.â josh commented with a laugh, thumbing through the stills from the website of the haunted house they were heading to that night. it looked AWESOME, and the added bonus was that you signed waivers on the way in that meant that â well, basically ANYTHING could happen to you. that, unfortunately, josh might have FORGOTTEN to mention to his friend. oops. âcâmon, man, buck up â ashleyâs NEVER going to go for you if she sees what a wimp you are. youâve got this; put on your big boy pants and letâs  G O ! â

Loving him proved to be exhausting. She could tell that he wasnât happy with her proposal. And of course, Sam pushed off her goal of professing her feelings for him. Instead, she brought Josh over to her bed and motioned for him to sit down. â Iâll make some hot cocoa, okay? You can choose a movie, if you want? â The words came out sadder than she had intended, but Sam hoped he hadnât noticed her change in disposition. After all, she knew he probably didnât want to go home.
while josh could be obtuse { often even SELF-INVOLVED to the point where others simply faded away in the dregs of his mind } he wasnât completely clueless. something was OFF about sam, and it UNSETTLED him in ways he was having trouble putting into words.â alright,â he replied slowly, syllables dragging as if he was sounding out the words for the first time, âiâll make it good.â while the smile he offered wasnât perfect, he was T RY I N G  and he had to hope that sheâd see that. it was SAM. of course she would. she was the ONLY person who really SAW him most days. âkill bill -- the first one, not the sequel.â

true to his word, there it is. right there, in his pocket, like it had never BEEN gone. except he knew that it HAD. âfuckinâ eh, man.â he commented with an amused grin, shaking his head as he phished his wallet out of his pocket. âslight of hand -- nice.â while josh wasnât well versed in MAGIC himself, he could appreciate the  T H E A T R I C AL I T Y of it all. he was a cinefile after all.Â

âŻ: what my muse says to yours after they havenât spoken for five hours since a fight
giving someone the silent treatment is AWKWARD ; made even more-so when youâre stuck in a car beside them. itâs proven even more awkward when the stereo starts skipping and youâre left with only the sounds of the open road and the SILENCE to keep you company. itâs been a little over five hours since the last words were uttered between the two of them and the silence is starting to get overwhelming.Â
josh isnât good with silence. heâs a talkative guy. one could argue that he never SHUTS UP even when he should â which, one could argue, is what got them into this mess in the first place â and staying silent is proving to be one of the most difficult things heâs ever had to do but heâs also stubborn⌠hence the silence. however, now that itâs starting to get dark, he canât help but pipe up.Â
âwe should probably pull over. switch drivers, so you can get some sleep.â
jess barely looks at him, simply takes the next left as instructed by the written directions on the napkin spread out across her lap { their GPS died a few miles back, thankfully the rest stop had patrons who were willing to give them directions } and stays quiet. he sighs, a hand running through his hair as his jaw sets. apologizing is not his strong suit.Â
âlook, iâm sorry about what i said. youâre â you arenât my last resort, and i wouldnât rather be out here with one of the guys.â even as he says it, he knows that he was in the wrong. heâd been angry about so many little things, things that seemed so insignificant now, and heâd aimed his words like barbs with the sole purpose of digging under her skin to hurt. âiâm glad youâre here. iâd still be stranded three counties over if you werenât.â  and that was the truth. heâd been lashing out as he struggled with a flat tire, deflecting all of her attempts to help because { like an asshole } heâd expected that she wouldnât be able to do it. surprise was on him â sheâd gotten it done in 2 minutes flat and leveled him with a lecture on being a âcondescending misogynistic assholeâ that had left him stunned. for five hours. âiâm a fucking idiot. i mean, you know that, you tell me that on a daily basis.â he shot her a weak smile, praying that heâd get one in return and practically beaming when he did. score. âyouâre, ah, youâre INCREDIBLE, jess. i mean, you already know that, and youâre smart as hell, and i shouldnât have acted like you werenât just âcuz youâre a girl.â
and for a moment he fully expects her to tell him to fuck off, that she regretted even getting in the car with him, and he waits on baited breath for her to say SOMETHING â anything, to clear the air between them. when she finally does, he canât help but laugh⌠he might have hurt her, and heâll have to make it up to her tenfold over the duration of their cross-country trip, but theyâre not doomed.Â
âunderestimate me again, washington, and iâll chop your balls off.â
â: my muses reaction to opening their front door and seeing yours drenched in rain
it was pouring outside. josh knew this because his morning run had been interrupted by it earlier. heâd nearly slipped in the entry way, shoes squelching against the marble as heâd grabbed the edge of the banister to keep from ending up on his ass. when heâd settled down on the couch in his pjs and a half dozen episodes of AMERICAN HORROR STORY, he hadnât expected to be disturbed.
yet there was his best friend, standing on his porch, drenched from head to toe with what looked like it might have been a stack of comic books tucked inside of his jacket. they were soggy and pretty rumpled, much like the demeanor of his best friend, but josh couldnât help but smile at the effort. heâd been home sick from school for over a week and had barely left the house so it was NICE to see a familiar face.Â
âyouâre looking a little soggy, cochise.â he drawled, opening the door so that chris could come in. âall this for little old me, iâm, ah, iâm TOUCHED.â and despite the joking manner, he was. heâd admittedly been dodging texts and emails all week, not in the headspace to talk to anyone, but seeing him in person WAS brightening his spirits. huh. maybe his mom had been right after all. people keep you grounded.Â
Itâs funny, Samanthaâs father had always described his love for her mother. It sounded so perfect, so devoted. Loving Josh felt⌠different. He was so cold to touch, and her name seemed to roll off his tongue in an uncaring manner. â I donât want to lose you. â The warmth her father had described, was no longer evident between the two young adults. â Do you want to stay the night? â
sometimes he hated the disconnect. how his mind would be SCREAMING at him to do one thing, but his body wanted to do the opposite. sam was hugging him, reaching out to him, and he just wasnât reciprocating the way he wanted to. it was FRUSTRATING. he was sure it had to be even more so for her. âsure.â he replied after a moments pause, mustering up what he hoped was a convincing smile. it wasnât. âsounds like a plan, stan.â
â ( doesn't matter who is who to me lmao )
â: the last thing my muse says to yours before leaving for good
âi told you not to come.â the cool metal of the phone feels ODD against his neck and he moves it away -- only keeping it just close enough to hear her. he could probably read her lips through the glass { ruby red, slightly chapped from the cold } but that would require more effort than heâs up to. even though theyâve got him on better meds, meds that make him feel more real than shell of a person, heâs still not at 100%. he never will be.Â
she doesnât say anything at first. at first he thought she was crying, but sheâs not -- her jaw is just set, lips trembling slightly, but her eyes are dry. good, is the first thought that springs to mind, she shouldnât be crying over me.Â
âi told you i wasnât going to listen.â she says, as stubborn as always, âi wanted to see you.â and before he can reply that she shouldnât, sheâs adding -- âi always want to see you. iâm surprised you let me.â
heâs not surprised that sheâs surprised. itâs been 18 months, 4 weeks, and 6 days since they locked him up. 18 months, 5 weeks, and 2 days since they found him GUILTYÂ and sentenced him to prison. while his parents sobbed and clutched at each other as they escorted him out of the court room, he hadnât resisted. two of his friends were DEADÂ because of a prank he planned. hell, they ALLÂ would have died if mike and sam hadnât managed to get everyone out of the house. { Â he tried not to think about jessica, dried blood caking her beautiful blonde hair, sobbing as she described finding matt and emilyâs bodies down in the mines. sheâd been the one to find them. she got herself out... they hadnât been so lucky }. no, he couldnât help but think that he deserved exactly what he got. mandatory minimum.Â
âyou wouldnât stop coming.â he finally replies, realizing too late that heâs been quiet for too long. TRAPPED in his own head. { it happens a lot } âi had to get you to stop.âÂ
he watches the realization wash over her face. anger, sadness, relief -- itâs all there, and itâs not a surprise to him. as much as she cares, as much as she wants to be there for him, he knows that she has to feel it -- the RESENTMENT, the anger, the HATEÂ that comes with knowing that he was responsible for the deaths of two of their friends. he doesnât blame her. he feels it too. she opens her mouth to speak out but heâs already put the phone down, a distant look on his face as he shakes his head and stands.Â
heâd mouth iâm sorry before walking away, but it wouldnât change anything.iâm sorry wonât bring their friends back.iâm sorry wonât remove the bags under her eyes, or the slump in her shoulders.iâm sorry wonât change their fates.
at least this way, maybe he can give her a REPRIEVE.an out. an excuse to move on with her life.she deserves it. she deserves everything.
