Dear Momma, It’s been a week now since you left us. I still can’t get that through my head. Or my heart. I felt your last breath beneath my hand. I saw you before they took you away. I have your ashes next to me. And, yet, I can’t believe you’re not here anymore. I wake up in the morning thinking I need to get dressed and go visit you. Then I remember to do that, all I need to do now is take a walk down to the pond. I’m going to need a little bit of help from you, momma, to find my way through this. I’m going home soon which means I’ll be further away from all you built. How will I cope? People tell me you’ll always be in my heart. But my heart is broken. I miss you so much. I tried to prepare myself for this day since you were diagnosed. But how could I possibly prepare to lose the person that made me who I am? How do I say goodbye to the woman who taught me empathy, compassion, respect, hard work, compromise, and most importantly, how to love. I suppose that’s how you stay with me. By me utilizing everything you’ve taught me. I’ll just have to learn to be less selfish in wanting you here with me. And be grateful that you’re no longer in pain. I will carry this pain for as long as I have to knowing you don’t have to carry it any longer. I still miss you, though. And will for the rest of my life. I love you always. I don’t even know how to say this. I can’t imagine a world without my momma in it. Unfortunately, I must now live it. I was beyond blessed to be able to be here with her, tell her I love her, and hold her as she passed. I thank you all for your thoughts and prayers. Continue them for my dad and family as we try to navigate a world without our anchor. Thank you to my extended family for being there for me. Thank you to the wonderful people here at Atkins Nursing Home for taking such wonderful care of mom. And thank you to Deborah Gibson for making the video of mom and dad’s song. It was the last thing they watched together. Mom and dad met 38 years ago today.
