I’m still not sure if I’m battling something inside me or something wrapped around me. I can’t even decide if I should be fighting it. The desires for queer, non-linear, passionate and engaged forms of expression... and freedom - as they simmer so does my skin blister. A manic sort of feeling and visceral reaction I can’t control - It resonates in one of those far-off places that one happens upon but can never know.

BOOTLEG TSHIRT SHOW PART II

Printed Matter is nervous to announce BOOTLEG TSHIRT SHOW PART II.

The second installment of this show is once again offering artist-made shirts featuring designs that take their cues from fake Canal Street copies and mashed up logos — all appropriations, which play a big part in the art and artists’ book worlds.

Some designs reference iconic bands like Black Flag, Sex Pistols, Pavement; some reference artists like Ray Johnson, Tom Sachs, Allen Ginsberg, Raymond Pettibon; some reference fashion labels like Westwood and PALACE SKATEBOARDS; a couple riff on social justice groups like the Black Panthers and the Symbionese Liberation Army; a few rebrand corporate logos (COSCO’s Kirkland and Mercedes Benz get a makeover) and Woody Allan and Princess Diana make small cameos.

Each design is an homage to an original; some are literally facsimile reprints, while others have been altered to take on whole new meanings.

Most designs probably make infringements on standard copyright laws, and the show might just cause a few cease and desists – get them while stock lasts.

You sat on the stairs to your apartment trying to calm down. I stood in the doorway keeping my distance. Everything that had been said today sounded selfish and mean. You were saddened and frustrated and so was I. In the last light, the soft blue of your shirt seemed stitched with filaments of gold. Your garden was lush green and overgrown. You were at your most beautiful here. When your eyes met mine, cool and unruly, my heart crashed. I’d been a terrible friend and hardly a lover. But there had been better times. Like that joyous embrace after my delayed flight; the unspoken awe and terror lying side by side that first time; searching for your face in a sea of sweaty concert goers and realizing you were right behind me. You were a tough guy chewing a toothpick and our eyes met with the kind of assurance that now seemed lost.
