Patients at the Bethlem Royal Hospital, circa 1860s - pictures were taken by Henry Heiring for the purpose of determining if faces could show evidence of mental illness.

Bethlem Royal Hospital, 1927 [unknown artist] - this London asylum is the oldest mental institution in Europe, started in 1247. Many horrendous experiments and treatments took place there which caused the asylum to be an inspiration to many later horror novels and films.
