Tales of a Transfer Student
How to become a computer Scientist
Its 3:00pm, the day is over. Your friends, classmates, they all pour into the hallways and open their blue lockers; they brag about their SAT scores and talk about college. Their dreams, goals, and accomplishments. Then there’s you, pondering about career choices in the back of the library alone. You browse the internet, searching for the top 10 most successful majors. Your physics teacher says engineering and science is the only valid occupation in the future but your writing teacher says otherwise. Its 5 o’clock. The hallways are empty and as you walk toward the exit you see NBA Star Chris Bosh on a poster. “Anyone can code” he says.
Now you're in class, at a university far from home. The classrooms are a lot different from what you had expected. They’re ... smaller. Almost like its high school all over again. Your professor walks in and on the first day of class she claims that half of the class will drop this course. Welcome to Intro to objected oriented programming. You fail the first quiz. Then you fail the first exam. Then you fail the second quiz and now you're panicking. You finally chosen a subject that interest you but you’re failing to produce any type of results. And then you discover something called curves in college. You pass the course with a C+.
It’s your second year in college, you're wiser and more confident. Yet here you are, alone in the back of the library, staring at your laptop in your cubicle. You should be studying but you can help but think, what if I went to another school. What if you didn't get rejected from your first choice. You browse the internet for top 10 schools for computer science major and you find that your first choice is still on that list. Instead of studying for your exam you decide to apply for that school again and take a leap of faith. You fail your exam the next day.
Spring semester storms by and you’re overwhelmed by all the amount of events you must attend. New student orientation, class registration, academic coaching sessions. Memorize the buses, know about the four different campus’s, learn the in’s and out’s of this university and you should be fine for the rest of your college career she says.
Suddenly you are no longer the wise sophomore computer science student but rather a naive freshman. You’re late for you first class, but it doesn't matter. You're not sitting in a classroom with assigned seats anymore. Instead its a lecture hall comparable to lincoln center. You take your first exam and failed harder than you ever had in your life, and so you panic again. You run to office hours and your professor doesn't have time for you, so he directs you to the TA.
You learn to forget everything in Intro to Object and oriented programming. All those hours spent studying for that course for nothing. Suddenly you're back to square one. You walk out of your TA’s office with regret and anger. But you’ll be fine in the next few days. You have new friends to comfort you and listen to you rant for hours.
You go to your dorm. You're alone and pondering about how you got here. You search up the top 10 most successful majors and you find computer science on that list. You lay down, close your eyes, and wonder to yourself. When will this all be worth it?
Plan for next class
For next class I will have a collection of background scenes and musics prepared for organization. I will record lots of B roll and be trimming my music choices for each scene as well as building the sequence of events I want my documentary to be in. for a 6 minute film, I should have at least maybe 20 minutes of footage to edit and such.
The first hour I will be trimming footage and placing them in sequence of events. I will need to edit the footage as well as implement transition devices.
Second, I will be doing the same thing but for music. I will have a large selection of music to choose from and be trimming them and connecting them to the appropriate scenes.
Not saying that I will get to this last part but in the case I happen to finish editing the music and footage, I will be touching up my entire project and ensuring that the music correctly matches the footage. I may place filters, use slow motion, fast motion, etc.
Tis the season for sales
The footage I took was raw footage of the daily event that Rutgers usually holds for comp sci students to interact and work on a project together. For this documentary, I decided to take a different approach than how I had originally planned. Rather than taking a stance on the impact of computer science on the world, I decided to make my film about the struggles of comp sci students and obstacles they undergo. Being one of the more difficult majors out there, there is a lot of information that can be broadcasted in a humorous way. For example did you know that comp sci majors live under the slogan that C’s earn degrees? This is because the classes are extremely difficult resulting the average being a c or less, thus having an immense curve. I will then feature interviews with students within this field and their thought process on why they chose this major, if they regret it, how they are doing and what their plan is moving on. there are many students who decide to enter the major knowing full well what they would like to accomplish with it and then there are others who have absolutely no idea what they are doing as a computer science major. those who question there major are the ones that make up the majority of the major. Being a computer science major is a rollercoaster in college. Whether it be extreme stress or high ambitions with impossible goals, the memes are all the same and every student can relate. My footage will capture these moments of distress and essentially make it one giant meme for these comp sci majors to laugh and for others to see things on our end.
Andy Warhol: Campbell Soup Cans
The painting was created in 1962 and was originally part of a 32 piece project featuring 32 of the same image. The image has a very “commercial” feel to it and is meant to represent the mass production in America as the 32 prints of the soup can is a symbol for the printmaking technique. In regard to my documentary, I feel like I can use this as a metaphor to how computer science is industrializing the commercial use of everything. The fact the the world is seemingly losing it’s creativity once we have everything laid out for us and machines to function in society. Automation and mass production will the future, in fact, its even prominent in the present. The 32 print of can will symbolize the new age of automation
Joan Synder: Acquainted with Grief
Synder is famous for creating abstract paintings that represent emotions and feelings that are in ways, very ambiguous. In “Acquinted with grief” however, the tone and expression is much more obvious with strange and dark nouns and adjectives written onto the painting in rather grotesque font too. The biggest word that stood out to me was anxiety. That is perhaps the perfect word to describe the emotions projected from this painting. This has become a symbolic message to my documentary as the strange ambiguity of the painting represents the unknown of our current state. We like to think that things will be better in the future but no one can really ever confirm that. With the age of technology upcoming, everyone is becoming unease. Recording devices are everywhere including our own cellular devices. We don't know their potential and that brings concern toward everyone. Yet that won't stop us from continuing to advance with technology.
Automation
Story
One day, my football team had an emergency meeting where the captain wanted all the players to meet at his house. Of course this meeting was not planned in advanced and I was clearly not expecting it on my friday night off. We had a Facebook messenger group chat so they would be able to tell who viewed the messages. I obviously got the text message but made sure that the read receipt did not send. While the meeting seemed urgent and all the players were waiting for me, I had absolute zero motivation to go see them at the time. As selfish as it was, at the time I wasn't thinking with my brain and I could have cared even less about the urgency of the meeting. Instead of taking the bus to my friends apartment at 11pm, I ignored the barrage of messages from my phone and continued along with my night. I was with my girlfriend after all and I was most definitely not going to leave her behind for a meeting that had to be called due to someone else fault. Yikes. I had my excuse all planned out. To be honest I could have stuck with something simple and say that I was asleep in bed and didn't here my phone. But my friends know me too much and know that I don't sleep early at that time. My phone would ring but I would just mute it and let it run through voicemail. I was already late, better off to not go at all. My plan was to message them back at 2am with some bullshit excuse like “I was stuck at a meeting till 12 and passed out in bed after” or “I left my phone in my car and just realized now”. A type of excuse that wasn't way out of the ordinary you know? For example saying that I was at the doctors or there was a family emergency wouldn't fly because then I would have to continue lying even after the fact. As this all happened, I cuddled with my girlfriend and watched Friends all night while munching on food.
How did I get here?
In my Sono Essay, I describe how my taste in music have evolved and matured over time as I grew older. Perhaps more specifically, as i began to experience different things in life. The early stages of my life were much more simpler and relax, however just like how the music had slowly transitioned, my life has become a blast of archaic and wild memories. At one point in my essay, i being to describe an experience I had at a festival. I used sound effects in my best attempt to mimic my first experience at one. During that point in my life, I decided to reach out my comfort zone on a whim and explore a music genre i would never expect to enjoy. My reaction can be felt during the recording and the music exponentially became louder and more chaotic. In the background you will hear various sound drops such as a heart beat or glass shattering. They represent the shattering of my "innocence" as a result of my experience at the festival. Im sure many of you can already pinpoint but i have sampled many different songs and mixed them myself. The follow songs are included below.
The last few seconds of my Sono essay represents the after effect and is left for interpretation for the audience. Of course the actual meaning is there but i choose not to say as it is more personal to myself. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S5cHBB9tVos&index=1&list=LL_Ol-sHRFYI86LG-RvTGknQ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N2jZmXePKV0 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=amNvDULdNk8 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CwUt9u92nMY https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ibxd8DMTUIw https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ju8Hr50Ckwk https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZPoXYOSyQ98 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2ips2mM7Zqw https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H64QG4UsrGI https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=96lCUfORlOo https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3zXxKyTTxl8&t=65s

Resources form Sona
I have found a few music videos in mind that I might want to cut and use as part of my audio pool. Im also looking for multiple sounds with the “edm” type of vibe to download and use. Currently I found a couple of bass drops that can really give listeners the chill and a nice eery vibe.
