The Isle of Burano is a tiny,swampy and lovely piece of land lying on the lagoon of the once mighty Republic of Venice,also called “La Serenissima”. Its history has always been (inevitably,I should say) double tied to the the far more important Venetian legacy: first traces of human settlements are dated back to the ninth century,following Republic’s territorial expansion during Middle Age. Similiarly to Murano, Burano developed its own specialized manufacture,the crochet. But probably the most famous things about this small island and by far the ones that caught my eye the most are its pictoresque and massively colored houses. In my mind they redifine the whole concept of the adjective “Lovely”. Whether they seem to me more like a greek village (Venice had a deep impact on the greek culture) or the Venetian representation of a Smurf Village I cannot say, but i’m completely sure that the one hour long journey from Venice by boat was totally worthwhile. if you had the chance I strongly recommend to stay there for one day or two, just to give a look to all the other isles nearby.
