Brilliant: Open Culture digs up the perfect Japanese word for our “guilt pile” of unread materials. Best approached with another untranslatable Eastern concept, the Chinese wu-wei.

Where the myth fails, human love begins. Then we love a human being, not our dream, but a human being with flaws.
Anaïs Nin (via explore-blog)
Sort of...but you are a dream, and you are perfect, and I do love you!
It is not very American to know how to make coherent intellectual sense. It's rare for Americans to have their children understand what they're talking about when they reminisce. But to be optimistic despite everything you've come to know about history is very American. In particular, it is very American to get filthy rich doing something nobody has ever heard of. Something that no authority figure ever gave you permission to do. In an industry that you could not be trained, educated, licensed for, because it previously just didn't exist. An industry that is not only brand-new but that may, at any moment, vanish like a bubble.
Bruce Sterling on America, from Tomorrow Now
The one thing in the world, of value, is the active soul. This every man is entitled to; this every man contains within him, although, in almost all men, obstructed, and as yet unborn. The soul active sees absolute truth; and utters truth, or creates. In this action, it is genius; not the privilege of here and there a favorite, but the sound estate of every man. In its essence, it is progressive. The book, the college, the school of art, the institution of any kind, stop with some past utterance of genius. This is good, say they, — let us hold by this. They pin me down. They look backward and not forward. But genius looks forward: the eyes of man are set in his forehead, not in his hindhead: man hopes: genius creates.

Flatiron baby! Not many more vibrant spots to sit and watch the world go by. Between 5th & Broadway, a little slice of Rome in Manhattan (Taken with Instagram)
My digs last night in Newport, 469 Bellevue Ave, directly across road from Chateau-sur-Mer and just down the road from The Breakers (the Vanderbilts' little place), The Elms and the mansion they shot the Redford version of The Great Gatsby in. Only one thing though - friend Brian, owner, was out of town & place locked up, so by "digs" I meant a nice place to park my mobile hotel! From the surrounding oaks came a spectacular dawn chorus. The Breslin, in The Ace Hotel, west 29th St off Broadway, where the granola has it's own name. And after a night on the town with Oelkers, tastes sublime! (Taken with instagram)
Just got off plane from Shannon. Van parked at pal George's house, so he had his driver pick us up. Mercedes limo. Result. Thanks George! Beats economy class in Delta & Rambo, for sure. Back in New York baby! (Taken with instagram)
Goldbanger & room-mate Pedro @ our favorite local deli / bagel joint. A real East Hampton institution.
Arrived in Manhattan last night with nowhere to stay. Couchsurfed. Awesome Norwegian dude had us to stay in sweet loft by Times Square. And we had a blinder with him down in the Meatpacking District. What a world... (Taken with instagram)
Golf in NZ: a long way from The Hamptons but no less endearing... (Taken with instagram)
