Me: Alright if you're Murdoch who's the killer and why?

My dad:There's not enough clues yet but I think it's Dr. Young because he wants to be in charge. (This is like not even 5 minutes before Murdoch puts it together so there are enough clues)

Me: You're aware he's a real person right?

Dad: Still say he did it

Me: Alright what if I laid out all the clues for you

After I lay out all the clues

Dad: As I said it's Dr. Young

Me: No it's not so yup you're Higgins, I'm Murdoch

My mom: No I'm Murdoch, you're Watts (motioning to my bowl of pretzels, slouched postion, and plaid pajamas bottoms)

Yay, you posted it already! Thank you! This bit was so hilarious.

Silent film geek and pedant here: silent films did not actually look like this, all flickery and jerky. Film, especially nitrate film, is very fragile and degrades easily. (Nitrate film is incredibly flammable. Look up the 1937 Fox vault fire and the 1965 MGM vault fire if you want to get depressed about how many silent films are gone forever.) By 1909, film quality was quite good, and the images on the screen were crisp, clear, and smooth. The pace of a film would have depended on both the photographer and the projectionist, who would speed up and slow down the hand cranking to match the action and mood. (This enabled some pretty remarkable trickery in early filmmaking, too.)

The bit at the end of this Murdoch sequence with the front of the house falling down is straight out of a Buster Keaton film, Steamboat Bill Jr. This particular stunt was so dangerous, with the real front of a real house, that most of the cast and crew left the set because they couldn’t bear to watch it filmed. As a young child, Keaton toured extensively on the vaudeville circuit with his acrobat parents. His father would literally pick him up and fling him across the stage when he was a toddler, and he learned to fall relatively safely. His nickname on the marquee was “The Human Mop.” He became one of silent film’s greatest stars, and he continued acting into the 1960s.

Anyway. Geekery aside, I really enjoyed this episode. In case I hadn’t mentioned, I love George Crabtree so much. Of course he invented the Tramp.
