[Todos hemos escuchado alguna vez acerca del contrabando de diamantes en africa y de niños explotados por esto, pero no es solamente eso lo que se extrae del continente. Quizas nadie de mis queridos lectores (algunos sí) ha escuchado del Coltan o Coltán pero lo utilizamos a diario sin siquiera saber para que sirve. Bueno, la miniaturización de la tecnología que ha dado lugar en las ultimas dos decadas es debido a este precioso "mineral". El coltan o coltán no es un mineral propiamente dicho si no la abreviatura de dos minerales columbopefdedle-tantalita, una serie de minerales formados por la mezcla de columbita que esta compuesta por oxido de Niobio hierro y manganeso [(Fe, Mn) Nb2O6] y tantalita que está compuesta por óxido de Tántalo hierro y manganeso [(Fe, Mn) Ta2O6] en cualquier proporción. Es de color metálico apagado. De él se extrae el metal tantalio, estos oxidos constituyen una una solución sólida en ambos minerales.
Coltán
Son escasos en la naturaleza y dan un claro ejemplo de materiales considerados simples curiosidades mineralógicas,sean cruciales para el avance tecnológico debido a sus nuevas aplicaciones.
El principal productor de coltan es la República Democrática del Congo con cerca del 80% de las reservas mundiales, si bien existen reservas probadas y/o en explotación en Brasil con el 5% de las reservas, Tailandia con otro 5% y Australia, esta última con el 10% de las reservas mundiales estimadas. Es utilizado en casi la totalidad de dispositivos electrónicos: teléfonos móviles, GPS, satélites artificiales, armas teledirigidas, televisores de plasma, videoconsolas, ordenadores portátiles, PDAs, MP3, MP4…

Se trata de un recurso estratégico, imprescindible en la fabricación de componentes electrónicos avanzados. El tántalo se usa principalmente en la elaboración de condensadores. El Condensador electrolítico de tántalo es en la actualidad un tipo bastante común de condensador presente en gran cantidad de dispositivos electrónicos, como en teléfonos móviles, ordenadores, pantallas de plasma, cámaras digitales… o proyectos de alta tecnología como, por ejemplo, los satélites artificiales enviados al espacio. Estos dispositivos son cada vez más pequeños, delgados y fiables gracias en gran parte al uso de los condensadores electrolíticos de tántalo que han ido sustituyendo a los condensadores electrolíticos tradicionales.
Prácticamente la totalidad de los dispositivos electrónicos actuales incorporan en mayor o menor cantidad condensadores electrolíticos de tántalo. Aunque la mayoría de los dispositivos electrónicos pueden funcionar con condensadores electrolíticos normales, los condensadores electrolíticos de tántalo tienen valores de capacidad eléctrica más exactos, soportan mayores temperaturas y son muchísimo más pequeños. Esto los hace ideales para las exigencias actuales de miniaturización de los dispositivos electrónicos que usamos habitualmente.
Coltán
La República Democrática del Congo posee el 80% de las reservas mundiales estimadas de coltan, este mineral está considerado altamente estratégico y por ello se entiende que exista una guerra en el Congo desde 1998.
Según las Naciones Unidas, el Ejército Patriótico Ruandés ha montado una estructura para supervisar la actividad minera en Congo y facilitar los contactos con los empresarios y clientes occidentales. Traslada el mineral a Ruanda donde es tratado antes de ser exportado. Los últimos destinatarios son EEUU, Alemania, Holanda, Bélgica y Kazajistán. Esta guerra, directamente relacionada con la explotación inmoral de este mineral, arroja un saldo de más de 5,5 millones de víctimas, lo que supone el mayor número de muertes desde la segunda guerra mundial.
Ruanda y Uganda, han sido acusados en varios informes internacionales, del expolio y tráfico de estas riquezas minerales del Congo. Siendo varios países occidentales los principales beneficiarios, la ayuda económica y militar continúa durante el conflicto. Se firmaron planes de apoyo y cooperación entre Estados Unidos y estos dos países, los cuales además de enriquecerse con el tráfico del mineral, vieron cómo parte de sus deudas externas fueron canceladas y se los consideró como modelos de desarrollo económico de la región. Entre las empresas más importantes con intereses en la región, ha sido mencionada la American Mineral Fields, en la que George Bush, padre del expresidente norteamericano George W. Bush, tiene notables intereses. Durante los años transcurridos hasta hoy han disputado la guerra dos bandos: de un lado Ruanda, Uganda y Burundí, apoyados por EEUU y los créditos del FMI y el Banco Mundial, y del otro lado Angola, Namibia, Zimbaue, Chad y las milicias hutu y Mai Mai.

La explotación del coltan, especialmente en Congo, ha ocasionado diversas polémicas sobre las posibles consecuencias a nivel social y ambiental. La explotación de este recurso ha alimentado conflictos armados entre facciones locales, apoyadas, en algunos casos, por gobiernos extranjeros como el de Uganda. Esto plantea un dilema moral similar al de la comercialización de diamantes de guerra. Otras preocupaciones derivadas de la extracción del coltán pasan por la explotación laboral de los trabajadores que participan en la misma o la destrucción de ecosistemas, pues los principales yacimientos coinciden con los hábitat de gorilas en peligro de extinción.
La ocupación ruandesa del este del Congo ha significado que la República Democrática del Congo haya sido incapaz de explotar este recurso en beneficio propio. Un informe reciente del Consejo de Seguridad de las Naciones Unidas ha reportado que una gran cantidad de este mineral está siendo explotado de forma ilegal y trasladado de contrabando a través de las fronteras por milicias de las vecinas Uganda, Burundi y Ruanda. Se estima que el ejército ruandés ha tenido un beneficio de como poco 250 millones de dólares en unos 18 meses de venta de coltan. Sin embargo, estas estimaciones son difíciles, puesto que Ruanda tiene sus propios depóstios de coltan, haciendo que el mineral adquirido mediante el contrabando sea difícil de identificar.
El contrabando de coltan también se ha identificado como la mayor fuente de ingresos para la ocupación militar del Congo. Debido a la dificultad de distinguir entre la explotación legítima y la ilegítima, algunos fabricantes de aparatos electrónicos han decidido, por motivos éticos, dejar de lado esta zona del mundo como fuente de coltan, y dirigirse a otras fuentes.

Los tres países identificados por las Naciones Unidas como contrabandistas de coltan han negado estar involucrados. El periodista autriaco Klaus Werner ha documentado los vínculos entre compañías multinacionales y el tráfico ilegal de coltan.

Almost Genius: Strap-On Urinals For Peeing In Public (Legally)

It’s an unfortunate fact of outdoor concerts: The number of toilets is always in inverse proportion to the number of drunk asses who need to pee. So people -- and by people, we mean shameless dudes -- make a urinal out of the local flora.
Here to rescue Mother Nature from full bladders everywhere is AANDEBOOM, a Dutch design studio that has invented either the world’s cleverest or the world’s grossest makeshift restroom. P-Tree is a rotation molded recycled plastic receptacle that straps onto a tree trunk, transforming your resident oak into the backdrop for a public (very public) urinal.
Once you get past the ick factor -- and really, is it any grosser than a porta potty? -- it’s actually pretty smart. Guys pee on trees. P-Tree acknowledges the inevitable and adds a layer of protection so that said trees don’t take a direct hit. (Or a slightly less direct hit. Because let’s be honest: Aim has never been the drunk man’s strong suit). The best part: P-Tree hooks up to a central sewerage system or a tank, which means it actually flushes. P-Tree 1, porta potty, 0. The only downside we can see -- and the reason this one's an "Almost Genius" -- is that there's no shielding on either side of the urinal. Hence the significant number of members visible in the other images we received of the design. (At first we thought these were the fingers of guys unzipping. We were wrong.)
The Roskilde festival in Denmark, a sort of Coachella of the North Sea, installed 50 neon orange P-Trees this year. The festival’s “problem with public peeing was significantly reduced,” designers Rogier Martens and Sam van Veluw say. Which makes us wonder if P-Tree could actually catch on and become as much a staple of outdoor concerts as ganja balls and Wavy Gravy. We reckon so, at least in Europe, where using a urinal strapped to a tree does not, apparently, constitute “public peeing.” But in Puritanical America? Concert producers would never allow it. Sorry, guys. Find a bush.
New blood test shows how long you will live
(Medical Xpress) -- A controversial test capable of revealing just how long you have to live is set to hit the market in Britain within the year. The test measures a person's telomeres which are the structures found on the tips of chromosomes and researchers believe that these telomeres are crucial indicators of the speed in which a body is ageing.
The test was developed by Maria Blasco from the Spanish National Cancer Research Centre. Blasco’s company, Life Length, is in negotiations with medical diagnostic businesses throughout Europe in order to collect blood samples and market the tests.
The test works by measuring the length of the telomeres and is able to then determine the biological age of a person. Research shows that individuals with shorter than normal telomeres have a shorter life span than those individuals with longer telomeres. The test, however, is not capable of giving an exact length of life in terms of months or years.
Many critics of the new test are referring to it as opening Pandora’s Box. While the personal interest an individual may have in seeing just how long they have left to live, insurance companies may be just as interested in this information. Life-insurance companies may look to require testing on individuals, and those unfortunate enough to have smaller telomeres may find it difficult to get insurance. Others are concerned this may open a new door to scams and ‘miracle cures’ being offered to ‘extend’ life expectancy and take advantage of those with shorter telomeres.
Researchers are hoping that the testing of telomeres could provide vital information on premature deaths due to many conditions ranging from Alzheimer’s, cancer, and cardiovascular disease. They believe that within the next five to 10 years, telomere testing will become very widespread. The current cost for this test is around $700, though Blasco hopes to be able to bring down the prices as public demand increases.
Lab Builds a Fully Functioning Artificial Small Intestine
California researchers have created a tissue-engineered small-scale small intestine in mice, a breakthrough for regenerative medicine and a step toward growing new intestines for humans. The process re-creates all the layers of cells that make up a functioning intestine.
Tissue engineering, which promises to rebuild or replace injured or failing body parts, has seen some major advancements in recent months, with biological scaffolds used to create new bones in rabbits and regrown muscle in humans. But it’s more difficult to make a complete organ, which has several types of cells that must all function properly.
The small intestine is a good subject for this type of study because it’s a particularly regenerative organ, said Dr. Tracy C. Grikscheit, the lead author of a paper on this research.
Grikscheit and colleagues at The Saban Research Institute of Children's Hospital Los Angeles took samples of mice intestinal tissue, including all the layers of cells — muscle cells and epithelial cells. Then the team transplanted the cells onto a polymer scaffold within the abdomen, a news release explains. Growth factor proteins encouraged the cells to replicate.
New small intestines grew on the scaffold, the researchers say, and they had all the constituents of a normal intestine. The new intestines “contained the most essential components of the originals,” according to the news release.
The research could someday be used to treat various intestinal disorders, including a particular gastrointestinal disease that affects premature babies, according to Children’s Hospital. An engineered replacement organ would conceivably last much longer than a transplant, if one is even available.
A paper on the research is published in the journal Tissue Engineering Part A.
Video: Virtual Grocery Lets Koreans Browse Grocery Aisles While Waiting for the Subway
Shopping on the go just got easier in South Korea. A new virtual store developed by Euro grocery giant Tesco for its line of South Korean Home Plus supermarkets lets customers browse store shelves for the products they want just as if they were in a physical store. But they’re not. They’re on a subway platform.
The virtual store has been a huge success among the 10,000 or so customers who have taken advantage of the service, which allows busy workaday South Koreans engaged in their daily commutes to optimize their time by shopping while they wait for the train. Tesco has simply plastered the walls of a subway station with visual recreations of grocery aisles. Each item has a QR code emblazoned on it. Snap that code with the Home Plus smartphone app, and it goes straight into the virtual shopping cart.
Customers can then check out via their smartphones as they step onto their morning trains. The groceries are delivered to their homes that evening at a specified time, saving office drones the added hassle of braving a crowded supermarket during the late-day rush.
This is not the first online grocery shopping scheme by a longshot, but it’s the first we’ve heard of that combines a virtual in-store experience with an online checkout and delivery system while also making the most out of those wasted morning minutes spent on the train platform. That’s good for both user and grocer alike. Users get the added value of a more efficient workday and an easier-to-acquire dinner. And just imagine the targeted advertising opportunities.
Video: Swiss Quadrocopters' Flight Controlled With Hand Gestures, Via Kinect
The quadrocopters at ETH Zurich’s Flying Machine Arena already have some amazing autonomous moves. But engineers want to make them easier and more intuitive to control, so they turned to the Kinect.
The Kinect sensor tracks the movements of a person in the arena, monitoring his arms and shoulders. As he raises his arm, the quadrocopter takes off; he can control it by sweeping his right arm around.
A raised left arm tells the quadrocopter to flip; a clap of the hands tells it to land. If the user drops both arms, the quadrocopter will hover. The user is protected by a no-fly zone around him, so the quadrocopter can’t fly into him. A standard controller gives the copter directions, as the video explains.
Other Kinectified drones and quadrocopters use the motion sensor technology to navigate; this one lets the humans do the navigating. Previously, the human controllers at the FMA have used a wand to direct the copters’ flight, but simple arm gestures are more intuitive.
This system is much simpler than other human-machine interfaces we’ve seen — and another great use for the Kinect. Check out ETH Zurich’s demo below.
