Mack shifted her weight to her left leg, her eyes searching the shelves for her target: a pack of double stuffed oreos. There were few things in life that she felt were a consistent in her lifeâgrowing up a military brat meant constant adjustments, acclimations and, in some cases, assimilations. New cultures, new regional expectations, new requirements for fitting in. Sheâd grown used to the constant changes and honestly, she was convinced that if anyone asked her, she could teach a college course on being a chameleon to find a fit in a new environment. There were, however, two items that Mack could be assured sheâd never have to live without: oreos and peanut butter. In fact, they had become such a constant in her life that they were her go to coping mechanism, especially for the nights in which her brain wouldnât slow down. The blonde wasnât ready (read: sheâd never be ready, as far as she was concerned) to address why she had such trouble sleeping but that didnât matterâwhen she did, sheâd pop open a container of double stuffed cookies and dunk âem straight in her peanut butter and voilaâshe was a brand new woman. Or at least that much better at ignoring the problem. âAh!â She exclaimed under her breath, her vision locking on the item in the question. As she went to secure the package (which happened to be on the highest shelf), her foot slipped from jumping and she landed straight on her side, crushing the cookies on her way down. âAh, fuck.â Mack groaned, rolling over and sighing in exasperation. Of course sheâd crush the last pack on the shelf. it was just her luck. Her eyes crossed the aisle, locking her gaze with someone who had, more than likely, seen the whole thing. Perfect. Six months in this town and she was going to get the title of biggest weirdo already. âUhm, I, uhâit might be easier if I donât explain what just happened here.â She replied, a slightly chuckle passing through her lips, trying to brush over her awkwardness. After all, she was still on the ground in a grocery store.
âHey! You alright?â Jude had stopped into Joeâs to pick up a few essentials â which really was code for four different frozen pizzas, among other assorted junk. But there were bagels and avocados in his basket which could at least count for something semi-healthy. âNeed some help?â He stepped forward and set his basket down, not sure if the girl wanted his help exactly but offering it anyway, and ready to help her up if she wanted that.
