“Meet my cousin Sarah. At 17, her future looks bright. She is in the top 10% of her class, runs cross-country and belongs to the National Honor Society and the debate team. She is also gay. Like any high school kids in a relationship, Sarah and her girlfriend wanted to go to prom together. But when they did that, Sarah’s parents, who believe that homosexuality is a sin and abnormal, sent Sarah away against her will to an East Texas Christian boarding facility for troubled teens to “pray away the gay.” Not only does this type of “therapy” not work, mental health professionals from organizations like the American Medical Association and the American Academy of Pediatrics have found it to be psychologically damaging, especially for minors. And Sarah has been told that she must stay in this facility for a whole year. So instead of being surrounded by friends and extended family who love and support Sarah for who she is, she’ll be isolated in a place where the fact that she is gay is treated as a sin and an illness. Instead of preparing for college and competing in the state debate tournament, she’ll be doing forced labor every day and enduring Bible-based “therapy” for her “disease.” She is not allowed phone calls or email or any form of computer communication. She is also not allowed visitors and cannot leave the property. She is completely cut off from the outside world. She tried to run away, but was caught by the staff and returned to the facility. Sarah’s extended family and close friends are trying to win her release through the legal system, but it’s not cheap. Attorney’s fees in the first few weeks have already exceeded $20,000, and they are continuing to mount, with a full hearing set for July. Sarah needs your help. But this is about more than just one gay kid – if we free Sarah we can help show that it’s not okay to try to make gay teens straight by sending them away and using the threat of God against them. Spread the word so being gay doesn’t mean losing freedom for Sarah. #savesarah.”

speech and debate anime
Hey. So I'm looking for a new debate event, but I'm not sure which I should do. What's the difference between each? What types of people are best suited for each? Many thanks! 💜
First off, I’d say that each type of debate are suitable for many different types of people, it really just comes down to what you want to get out of debate rounds!
Policy Debate is the oldest form of debate. Policy debate is done with 2 person affirmative and negative teams. Policy resolutions are debated for the entire school year. Policy rounds are also the longest rounds, at 8 speeches often going over an hour long. In Policy, you propose a policy plan that fits under the resolution (ex: if the resolution is increasing transportation infrastructure, you may propose building high-speed rail lines, or repairing highways and bridges), so even though the resolution lasts the whole year, debate doesn’t get dull. The affirmative side will propose the plan, and the negative side will do their best to convince the judge not to pass the plan. Policy uses a lot of detailed evidence, and is generally regarded as a “depth” over “breadth” sort of debate, as you debate something very specific and in high detail. I did Policy for 3 years of high school and thoroughly enjoyed it.
Lincoln Douglass Debate is the 2nd oldest type of debate. LD is done with 1 person affirmative and negative teams. LD topics change every 2 months. LD rounds are not quite as long as Policy rounds. LD topics generally focus on an action that a government “ought” to do, and, while debating the pros and cons of this action, morality and value debates also feature in LD arguments. LD does not use quite as much evidence as policy, though it draws from a greater range of sources than policy evidence. (An LD debater may reference Kant, for example, as a source for a value argument.) I’ve personally never done LD, though I’d have liked to.
Public Forum Debate is the newest type of high school debate. PuF is done with 2 person pro and con teams. It’s exactly half the length of a Policy round. PuF resolutions change every month. The idea of PuF is that it is a debate that can be judged by a lay-person, so the topics generally stay close to current events issues that don’t require a wealth of niche knowledge to understand. PuF debaters argue the pros and cons of a certain action of the government, and tend not to draw quite as heavily on evidence as Policy. I did PuF for a year, and I’ll admit that I didn’t enjoy it as much as I did Policy, though I did not dislike it at all.
Some districts regard Congress as a type of debate (in mine we consider it a speech event). I don’t know if yours does, and I don’t know a lot about it, so you may want to consider asking someone else to explain Congress if need be. Also, some areas have Parliamentary debate, but I know nothing about it at all so I’m not going to try and explain it.
Hope this helps and I hope you find a type of debate that you enjoy!

Me when I first joined debate: wow all these people are so cool I can't wait to be like them!!!!
Me now:
Wow all these people are so extra I can't believe I'm like them
Me: I just do Forensics for fun! I don't really care about powering or anything!

okay but why has no one mentioned that in Disney World, there’s the Hall of Presidents, where every president gets an animatronic of themselves and whoever the current president is gets their own time to say the oath and give a little speech
so imagine if trump was to be president
do you want trump in Disney World forever? do you want a horrifically lifelike cheeto-colored animatronic to speak at you and your children in trump’s exact voice for 4 years AT LEAST? and even after that he’ll be in there forever, you can’t exactly remove a president from the hall of presidents
keep trump out of Disney 2k16

When you overhear someone mentioning forensics
Mop For Change
To my trusted followers, I, Classicgansey, am writing to you today because we are facing a crucial decision. Too long have we been led astray by incompetent leaders. Too long have the needs of the many overshadowed the needs of the few. We need a change, and there’s only one candidate who can bring that change. I’m writing to you about Mop. The choice, to me, is easy. A vote for Deborah is a vote for elitism. A vote for controversy and dishonesty. The choice is clear. Vote for Mop. Yours, Classicgansey #VoteMop
I know that Wretched Tooth may seem like the fun, passionate lizard some may think they want, but Mop's bright-eyed optimism and openness is what we need right now. #Mop2016
maybe if i spoke in a deeper voice mimicking that of the Male Debater™ judges would give me more speaks
