“Jules, hello? Earth to Jules,” Louis commented, squinting at the other. “Are you alright? You don’t seem completely here.”

“Sorry, sorry,” Jules apologised quickly, hazarding at a smile towards the other. “I didn’t get much sleep last night and my brain likes to keep reminding me of that fact,” she shrugged, reaching to take another swig of coffee from her thermos. “What were you saying?”

bettie paused when the other introduced herself. “oh hi - yeah thats me.” she chuckled softly at the introduction. “i mean - it’s not really life saving just yet but hopefully soon, still waiting to graduate and all that.” she admitted, tucking a loose strand behind her ear. “how long have you guys been friends? she asked, smiling brightly at the blonde. 

“Well okay, pre-life saving if you want to be specific,” Jules grinned back. “How long until you graduate?” she asked. “My whole life. We lived across the street from each other growing up so we grew up together, pretty much. Bentley is basically my big brother at this point.”

“I guess, a little yeah,” Alec admitted. “I uh, I told Charlie too the other day. I don’t think it gets better though. It just…” he sighed and shrugged. “I don’t know, it feels like it just makes it more real. More than me being constantly reminded everyday.”

“You told Charlie?” Jules asked, a small smile on her lips. “Alec, that’s big. I’m so proud,” she said, squeezing his arm lightly. “I know it’s not going to get better, and I’m sure saying it has made it feel more real. But these important people in your life now know what’s going on, and we can help you as best as we can.”

“Jules.” He whined, tipping his head back to the sky for a moment before looking at the other, “You ask me this every year and you know the answer is always the same. I don’t know what I want, you don’t have to get me anything, it’s the same speech.” He told her. “I hate this time of year for that one specific question, the rest of Christmas is awesome though.”

“What sort of a sister would I be if I didn’t get you anything?” Jules tilted her head. “A bad one,” she gave a singular nod. “That excuse may have worked when I was still a student but now I have my own money it doesn’t. You seriously can’t think of a single thing?” she asked. “How about some hoodies to replace the ones I stole... that I can also steal in a few months?” More of a Christmas gift for her, however. “You and Ash are going to try to get on this year, right? Because that’s the part of Christmas i don’t like.”

“Oh? Prepared reasons? I am not surprised. However, I am wanting to hear what these reasons were going to be.” Ash laughed.

“Okay, here goes. Number one, I will get us matching Christmas jumpers so free clothing. Number two, mum has agreed to make her famous beef wellington so if that isn’t a good enough reason to join, I don’t know what is,” she chuckled. “And number three, spending quality time with Arlo and my new kitten Pluto. Any of that convincing enough?”

Hazel had barely left her flat since fighting with Gale and Freya, but damn was she craving a latte. She knew that Maddie was manning the store, so Hazel ventured out, hoping no one would talk to her. She didn’t feel like herself since fighting with her brother, or telling everything to Maddie. It was probably because Hazel finally figured out everything she had been feeling, the stuff that started the fight with her brother. That made her feel worse, it made it feel too real, and Hazel always feel like she didn’t matter, so feeling those heavy feelings never felt right. Hazel got her latte, ready to exit, when she saw Juliet enter. “Shit,” she cursed under her breath, looking for an out.

Jules was running an errand for the Minister in Diagon Alley when she spotted Hazel. Her whole morning at work had been taken over by thinking about what had happened on Halloween, and how guilty she felt for not recognising all the signs her boyfriend was showing. And while she knew she shouldn’t speak to her, Jules had to, for Gale’s sake. “Look. I know you probably don’t want to talk to me or even see me right now. I don’t want to get in the middle of what’s going on with you and Gale, I don’t. But you should know that he had a seizure last night.”

Gale blinked a few times, trying to wake himself up again. He didn’t feel okay going back to sleep right now. Not after that and not after she’d asked him a question he didn’t want to answer but knew he should, “I haven’t really been sleeping,” He admitted, “I mean, I have. But I have nightmares. I keep waking up and I’m afraid to go back to sleep,” His eyes started filling with tears and he rubbed them away quickly, “Also, I had a fight with Hazel. On our birthday. Freya’s back in town and I know Hazel is freaking out but we aren’t speaking and even if we were, we fought about her so we’d probably just fight again so…” He cleared his throat, “So, I don’t know. Maybe one of those things triggered it.”

“You do?” Jules asked, a wave of guilt flowing over her. “Why don’t you wake me up? I am right next to you, and I want to know that these things are happening, so I can hug and comfort you and tell you that everything is going to be okay,” she told him, moving her hand so her palm could cup his cheek while her thumb brushed away any stray tears. “Oh Gale,” she let out a sigh when he’d finally told her what was going on. “I’m so sorry I didn’t know any of this or spot that you weren’t doing well,” she apologised, a slight frown on her lips. “Was the fight about Freya being back in town?” Jules asked, not really knowing much about what was going on between them. “Both of those things individually are really tough for you to go through, so I’m sure that combined they’ve been awful,” she sighed. “Look, I know I’ve had a rough time lately with the hospital and recovery–... but you can still talk to me about what is going on in your life, okay? You have been here for me through everything and always listen to my problems, so for once just let me do the same, yes?”

“Yeah, but even before you were dating, he was always making googly eyes at you. Honestly, you’re both brilliant, but how you never noticed it sooner I have no idea.” Maddie replied. “They always check out by the Shrieking Shack for students getting up to no good, but they never bothered hiking up here. It’s their own fault, really.” She shrugged. “As truly hilarious as I think that would be, I’d never spring anything like that on you. We’re just here for the pretty view, promise.”

“Was he?” Jules asked, “Clearly I missed that, probably too busy making googly eyes at him myself,” she chuckled. “I’m more mad how I didn’t notice that you had a thing for Hazel soon if I’m honest,” the blonde admitted with a quirk of her brow. “People go to the Shrieking Shack to get up to no good? But... isn’t it haunted?” she questioned the other. “I’ve got to admit it’s pretty ingenious out of the box thinking, Mads,” Juliet nodded in admiration. “Nope. I will not be touching that stuff. I barely drink alcohol, so I literally have no idea how that would affect me.”

Gale didn’t remember any of it. He never did. He should have expected this to happen though. His seizures were triggered by stress and a disrupted sleeping pattern didn’t help much either. He had been dealing with both and hiding it. Somewhere deep down he thought he could feel and hear Jules trying to talk to him, trying to get him to respond but he couldn’t get himself to. His body was not in his control anymore. His eyes even opened, he could see her face but he felt he was a million miles away.

When it was finally over, the medication kicking in, he felt himself wake up with a start, “Jules?” He groaned, “It’s okay, I’m okay,” He insisted as soon as he realised what was happening, squeezing her hand. He always said that. He had never been in any danger during his seizures, though that could change if he fell asleep in the wrong place. Still, he didn’t want to worry her. He knew he’d have to explain what had been going on but he’d put it off as long as he could, “I’m sorry I scared you.”

Jules was dozing off as she heard him stir, and she shot awake at the mention of her name. “Gale, you’re awake,” she breathed a shaky sigh of relief and squeezed his hand back. “You don’t have to apologise,” she told him, though Jules was scared during it. She always was. “I’m just glad you’re okay.” It was always relief that flooded her like this. “You didn’t have a fever, so do you know what triggered it?” she asked.

Gale nodded, “Yeah, who knew Halloween could be so exhausting,” He joked just before he yawned. He enjoyed the way she reacted to his touch and smiled sleepily as her head rested on his. He lifted a hand from her waist to pull the nearest blanket further over them and then let that hand intertwine with hers. He laughed softly and nodded, “Yeah, I guess we have been,” He agreed. His eyes trailed to the screen but he could already feel them drooping. He nuzzled his face further into her, enjoying the warmth and the smell of her shampoo coming from her hair. It was like it was lulling him to sleep or maybe the exhaustion was taking over.

“Who knew,” she chuckled quietly. Soon Jules was lulled off to sleep with the background noise of Gale’s breathing and the warmth of the blanket. The blonde was jolted awake with the movement of Gale’s leg against her own. She blinked a few times and felt the movement again, and as she was beginning to register the rest of her surroundings she noted that she could hear clicks coming from his mouth. Panic laced her brain as she realised what was going on. “Gale? Can you hear me? Gale?” she repeated as she took his hand. “Squeeze my hand if you can hear me.”

There was no response. Jules took a deep breath and tried to remember what it was exactly she had to do. She got up from the sofa and rolled him onto his side and ran into the bathroom, pulling out all the bags from the cupboard leaving them strewn on the floor as she pulled out the bottle, taking a pill from it and running back to the sofa. Jules opened his mouth and put the tablet inside his cheek, rubbing it in until it had dissolved. That was all she could do. Jules hated this bit more than anything else, waiting for him to regain consciousness. She sat on the opposite side of the sofa but took his hand and rubbed soft circles on his palm as she wiped the tears of panic away with her other. “We’re okay. You’re going to be okay,” she said to herself as much as to Gale.

Gale knew what she was going to say before she said it. She could feel in her body language that she was anxious and he felt it too. He was worried about taking it further. Excited but nervous and he didn’t want to rush it if they weren’t ready. He didn’t plan on regretting a single moment with her and that started with taking things as slow as they needed. He nodded and pecked her quickly, “Of course it’s okay,” He smiled and shifted her so her position is his lap was more suited for cuddling than making out, “You don’t have to have a reason. We’re moving at a pace that we’re both comfortable with. You say stop, we stop. I’m never going to ask why,” He knew it would be the same way for him if he said stop. He kept his arms wrapped around her waist and rubbed circles into her side with his thumb absent-mindedly, “But I am a little tired too,” He admitted. That was an understatement. He was in an almost constant state of exhaustion but he would never let on. He tilted his head to rest in on her shoulder, “Shall we be like an old married couple and fall asleep in front of the TV?” He asked jokingly, not thinking about calling them a married couple before he said it.

Jules shuffled back onto his lap, already feeling a little bit of relief as she felt immediately comfortable again. “Okay,” she nodded. Jules still felt bad about stopping it, but if Gale said it was okay, then she believed it. Jules leaned into his touch on her side. Even if she wasn’t ready at this moment for the next step, she could still enjoy the ones she was ready for. “It’s been a long day, I think we both need some rest,” she told him, resting her head on his. “Yes, we should be. Though I think we’ve been that couple since before we were even a couple,” Jules said teasingly, reaching to intertwine her fingers with his.

“Maybe they just missed us? You know how obsessed Gale is with you.” She waved her off. “Is everything romantic to you? Actually, we mostly came up here to get stoned. Professors don’t come up this way at all.” Maddie laughed. “Not that that’s what we’re doing up here. I just thought you’d like the view.”

“Or they were actually worried?” Jules countered, “I also wouldn’t say he’s obsessed with me. We are dating, you tend to be very into your partner when you’re dating someone,” she said with a raise of her eyebrows. “Pretty much everything is, yep. And I’m not ashamed to admit it,” Jules told her. “But that is not romantic,” she chuckled. “You scouted out this area for long enough to learn the patterns of the teachers? I’m impressed,” Jules nodded. “If your plan for us was to get stoned, I would definitely have something to say about it.”

Gale nodded, “I trust you,” He said instead of a simple okay. Because he did, he’d always trusted her. She would never push him and he would never push her, “You too, okay?” He added at that thought. One of his hands trailed up her back and into the tangle of blonde curls. As he did this, he did tug on them but not hard, just as a result of moving his hands through them. With a hand on her lower back, he adjusted where he sat so he was sitting up a little straighter. It gave him more mobility and brought her body closer to his as he now hummed against her lips. He wasn’t sure they would go much further than this. He wanted going all the way to be special and while every moment was special, he still had something big planned. Right now, he was happy just letting his hands and lips explore her. 

“I trust you too,” Jules reaffirmed. There wasn’t anyone else in the world she trusted more, really. “Of course,” she smiled against his lips, it only growing wider as he began to play with her hair. Juliet brought her hand to his neck and found it trailing up to his hair where she gently pulled at it. But with the change in position, Jules began to feel a little anxious. She thought she was ready to do something, to go further. But the blonde was beginning to overthink everything and even though she really didn’t want to, she pulled away slowly from him and smiled softly. “Is it okay if we stop?” she asked quietly. “Nothing’s wrong, I’m just a little tired,” she told him.

People said this was the honeymoon phase of their relationship. Where they’re hands on and all in love. To Gale, this felt like them settling into their relationship. They were already in love, just not hands on. They were best friends and now they were a couple and they were getting used to the changes, getting comfortable with being hands on. Sure, they had hugged and cuddled and shared a bed before but the rest of it was very far out of his comfort zone. It was becoming easier because Jules was someone he trusted most in the world, “Yes,” He said, nodding and smiling softly as he pecked along her jawline for a moment before moving back to kiss her lips again, “It’s okay.”

This was the first time Jules had really done any of this. Sure she’d seen movies, and knew what she was supposed to do but it all felt so foreign yet so normal in the moment, like she didn’t know if what she was doing was right or felt good. The blonde let out a low hum as he kissed her jawline. “Okay,” Jules said against his lips as he brought them back to hers. “Just tell me if we’re going too fast and we can stop. I don’t want to do anything you don’t want to do,” she told him, pressing a kiss to his cheek before looking back at him and kissing him once again.

“Goodness!” Freya answered when she found herself being practically squeezed to death. Still, she found herself laughing softly. “Well at least you are happy to see me.” She couldn’t resist giving the girl a hug in return, a smile on her lips. “Well I was never going to be gone for good, only for a little while. I have too much here to leave forever. As they say, there is no place like home.”

“Of course I am! Are you kidding?” Jules said finally letting go of her. “This place really is home, I’m so glad you’re back to enjoy it all,” she grinned widely. “Does Gale know you’re back? Or is this a surprise return?”

Gale laughed against her lips as they kissed as soon as the movie started. He was happy to keep doing that. He liked this stage of their relationship. The stage where they couldn’t keep their hands off each other. He wasn’t sure it would ever end. For him, Jules was the only person he had ever wanted to be like this and it felt like she would be the only person ever. He wrapped his arms around her tighter, pulling her closer to the point where she was half on top of him. He hesitated to pull her any further though. They talked about this, taking further steps but he always worried about stepping too far. Right now, he just wanted her close.

It had taken them a while to get to this stage in their relationship. The transition from best friend to girlfriend has been more difficult than Juliet thought, but now that they couldn’t keep their hands off each other Jules felt so much more comfortable– not that she ever didn’t feel comfortable around Gale in the first place. As Gale moved her. Jules posed herself fully on top of him. She knew they wanted to start exploring more but she still wanted to check. “Is this okay?” she asked quietly, pulling her head up for a moment.

“Home sweet home.” Freya couldn’t help but murmur out on a sigh as she glanced around the area. It still felt a little surreal to be back here and she didn’t know whether to be happy or anxious about the whole situation. Still, she was determined not to let it unsettle her as she stepped through the doors of the bar.

Juliet’s head turned as she heard a voice on the streets of Hogsmeade she’d not heard in a rather long time. She told her colleague she’d meet him back at the ministry and immediately walked back, her suspicions confirmed. “Oh my Godric– Freya?” Jules exclaimed, trying to refrain herself from throwing herself at the other blonde. “It’s been so long! I can’t believe you’re here!”
