Golden Gate Highlands National Park, South Africa

This outcropping of rock shows part of the characteristic stratigraphy found in South Africa’s Golden Gate Highlands National Park.

These rocks were deposited about 200 million years ago, just before South America and Africa began rifting apart. The area alternated between wet and dry, creating a sequence of sandstones deposited in desert-like settings and mudstones deposited in marsh-like settings.
