The thing is that Eliot knows. He knows that he has lost his entire fucking mind. He’s come to bear the special burden of the lunatic who is granted agonizing periods of lucidity just clear enough to fully assess his sad state and just long enough for the horror of it to screamingly sink in. One unremarkable day a boy walked towards Eliot in what is as close to a paradise as Eliot is likely to get—1) not Indiana 2) magic that made acquiring 1) expensive clothes b) good drugs and c) gay sex all very easy to facilitate, 3) Margo—and he’d had been blissfully unaware that the boy was actually not a boy but a grenade in a sexy boysuit flung into his serene and satisfying existence to characteristic obliterating effect. Eliot very well should have been easy: because there shouldn’t be a grenade, because it’s inconceivable that someone with the name of Quentin Makepeace Coldwater should threaten his sleep, his libido, and his very sanity.

i still think max's rape storyline in season 1 of black sails was not necessary and could have been handled differently but having the whole show and her complete arc i think it serves a purpose? not necessarily intended in the writing and a purpose that still could have been served by other means but there for me nonetheless. which is this: the show's thesis is, civilization and empire is irredeemably corrupt, so the only moral thing is to resist it, violently if necessary. i agree. civilization and empire will call any such attempts monstrous out of self-preservation. the pirates make their own civilization with its own code, egalitarian but brutal, and max's abuse in season 1 asks who gets left out of this vision. who is still vulnerable. and it makes her own position in season 4 make perfect sense: someone will always be hurt. moreover her rape was not a bug, it was baked into nassau's self-maintaining moral ecosystem predicted on vengeance. flint and madi's vision would aim to be very different, but max can't know that, she is not privy to all the philosophizing, & without the philosophy it just looks like violence, merely more chaotic. and even with, maybe just with a different set of self-defending rationalizations. so the best option in max’s view is to place yourself within the system and make your own small patch of earth as benevolent as you can. the rebellion fails, but there will be no slaves in nassau under max’s rule. silver’s betrayal buys madi the sort of security and comfort that max thinks of as freedom but for her it’s a prison. anyway, man i wish her and madi could have talked, in series.
