Robert closed his eyes, thinking back. His life had had unbelievable highs and lows over the years, but the one common thread running through everything had been Aaron. Ever since the moment heâd met him, Robertâs life had orbited around Aaron. He couldnât even imagine what his life would look like if theyâd never met. It didnât make sense.
Their three kids, five grandchildren, a whole life around each other. Most of the family had stayed in the village too which helped. He had his entire family all around him, and Aaron was central to that. Robert played their weddings back in his mind smiling, replayed their first kiss. Theyâd been so young it was like someone elses life, but he still remembered how fast his heart had been racing. Taking an impulsive risk to kiss Aaron hadnât felt life altering at the time, but it had been.
âHey.â Aaron put a mug of tea on the table for him and Robert smiled as Aaronâs hand brushed across his shoulders, a familiar gesture. âYou looked far away.â
âI was reminiscing,â Robert said. âAbout you.â
âWhich bit?â Aaron asked. âThereâs a lot to choose from.â
âI wouldnât change a thing,â Robert said quietly. âBecause weâre here and happy.â
âI know what you mean,â Aaron said, kicking his feet up on the coffee table. âIt always hurts when I think about times we werenât together.â
âWeâve been together more than apart,â Robert said and Aaron nodded. Aaron shifted to rest his head on Robertâs shoulder and Robert put an arm around him.
âEven if weâd never made it work after prison,â Aaron said. âIt would have been⊠incredible, really. I never believed in soul mates. Not until you came along.â Aaron shrugged, like he was embarrassed heâd said too much, but he didnât take it back. Robert planted a kiss on Aaronâs hair.
