Is there anything left from us in the places we were?
(WE ARE) ALSO HERE from David Carrasco D. on Vimeo.
PerĂș is diverse. It is difficult to define the peruvian by his skin color. Some recent statistical data indicate that about 70% of the population is considered mestizo and indigenous, that is, not white. In our blood we have "a bit of everything." After 400 years of being a Spanish colony, what was left was a great mixture of races and colors, but that did not mean that we would all be the same. Racism and classism are one of the oldest and most current problems that we have in my country, being so ingrained that many times it is difficult for us to even identify them. And even with a predominantly and overwhelmingly mixed-race population, if you turn on the television or look at a local store magazine you will see that 99% of the models are caucasian. And I'm not exaggerating. The representation of peruvians in the local media comes to seem to be from another country located not even in Latin America. And in that context is how we, "the cholos*" live: knowing that "white" is good and pretty; and that "non-white" is bad and unpleasant.
In "Nosotrxs tambien" ("We too") I scanned magazines from local clothing stores to point out the overwhelming presence of white models and then, with some fashion shots, I ripped the shape of the models on the paper to be filled with various photos of real peruvians. The cumbia that I used for the video is titled "Poder Cholo" (from Manzanita and his group), which means "Power of the Cholos". And in the way that this power must open, I hope that we can all see ourselves reflected equally in the media because only in that way will change what we think of ourselves.
*The word "cholo" is used pejoratively to refer to a mestizo person or also, in some cases, as an adjective for something in bad taste.
