I just remembered an event that happened to be several years ago while dating my ex. I was in class and a kid, young college student, started seizing in my 8am English class.

I helped get him unentangled from the desk he was in, it was a wheeled desk and chair combination, got him turned on his side and put the sweater I was wearing under his head, to keep him from bashing it on the concrete floor during his over five minutes of seizing.

It was a sweater I was borrowing from my boyfriend at the time, it was old, a little worn. It got taken with the kid when ems scooped him up. I didn't know this kid, I didn't even know his name from roll call.

My ex was furious that this dingy, old sweater that he never wore was taken with a young boy that had a medical emergency right in front of me. I was more focused on keeping this kid safe than getting that sweater back. The kid never came back to class that semester, so I never got an opportunity to ask for it. I didn't particularly care, but Branden was furious. He was mad and resentful that I had lost it. He held that against me our whole relationship.

And I don't know, I compare that to now, to my shiny new husband, there's no comparison. Tim has lost many shirts to the kids or my antics. He just laughs and says he wanted an excuse to buy himself something anyway. It's calm, a little silly, easy-going. This is how it could have been, all the time. This was how it should have been

I was a girl that had Nothing and when I needed help, someone helped me. A million small slivers of help from a million different sources...except my Dad. Who glorified my suffering, in PUBLIC. Who said he didn't help me, not because he couldn't, or because he didn't want to, but because I NEEDED to suffer. As if suffering, or watching people suffer when you can alleviate it even just a little bit is virtuous somehow

Did you know that most hospitals and some doctor’s offices are what is known as a 501r, or “medical non-profit”? 

This means they are legally required to have a “financial aid policy” or “charity care policy” 

What is means, is that they are LEGALLY REQUIRED under United States Law to provide FREE OR DISCOUNTED healthcare, and also to FORGIVE EXISTING MEDICAL DEBT to individuals with financial difficulty. 

Basically, every household making und $100K a year is eligible for a reduction in their medical costs. 

Billing departments often try to push people to get on a “payment plan” if someone asks, but don’t accept it! 

Ask if they have a Charity Care or Financial Aid policy “Based On Income.” 

If it looks like you might not qualify? 

Apply anyway. They try to scare people away with scary processes. 

YOU QUALIFY. EVEN IF YOU ARE ALREADY IN COLLECTIONS.
