Retcons - DAV Investigative Journalism vol. 2
Very fresh comment pulled from a current thread on retcons in DAV, where the person before them pointed out that the Crows were retconned, which they don't want to accept. So...investigative journalism! (This will turn into a series ig)
The nuance is in Treviso itself — extreme poverty, starvation, and squalor in the Drowned District, the Crows positioning themselves above it all while amassing wealth.
A most interesting point, now where in the game is that ever acknowledged? Where is the contrast to the Qun that would logically try to win over the people by treating them better (proper food, protection etc)? Oh wait, the Qunari were reduced to animalistic grunting and near mindless beast - the Antaam at least. Without the Qun they simply lose it and go feral! Kinda racist writing, among other things that I cannot quite put my finger on. Definitely worthy of a vol. 3 for my series here.
The Crows as freedom fighters
That one is fine on its own actually as that has been established since Genitivi's codex entry about Antiva in DAO. The Crows are the deterrent against the armies and the protectors of Antiva like that, considering that Antiva has no standing army.
Their fame is such that Antiva keeps no standing army: No king is willing to order his troops to assault her borders, and no general is mad enough to lead such an invasion. The attack would likely succeed, but its leaders would not see the day.
That already is a huge implications that the Crows will fight to protect Antiva from invaders (like the Qunari), which is what they are doing in Veilguard. The issues lie in the presentation of the faction as a whole outside of that.
Heck it is also fine that the Crows are currently working so well together despite their different houses and rivalries. There is a codex from Teia where she doubts that this will hold post invasion but hopes for it. But for the situation it makes sense. Now if there were ideological clashes between the Talons and all, strategic disagreements on how to break the invasion best...you had such a good setup Bioware and you did not even use 1% of it well.
2. The Crows are basically a mob rule
Yet we cannot call it out as such. The game does not allow for Rook to criticise the Crows due to them being an allied faction and as such they have to be quite pure because Rook can obviously only work together with heroic factions.
Them buying kids young to groom then into the deadliest assassins? All but forgotten. Well, that would be nice if it was just forgotten. The establishment of a house for orphan kids like Jacobus gets played as a hopeful ending, instead of the dark ending that it really is, as the Crows are effectively upping their child soldier machinery. Not that Rook could ever name that - or anyone for that matter. The Crows are great!
But we have a justification from Epler, luckily:
Absolutely. I don't recall if this exchange made it into the final game, so apologies if not, but it's very clear that the faction of Crows you interact with is the 'idealists' of the bunch. The rest of the Crows, on the other hand, are far more pragmatic and willing to work with whoever emerges on top of the pile. Illario's far more representative of the average Antivan Crow than either Teia or Viago, and it's only Caterina that kept him in check this long. ~Jepler
How insightful, right? Well, let us unpack the nonsense spoken here.
Illario is indeed far more representative of the average Antivan Crow, that much is correct. But the rest of the entire statement is bullshit.
However was it abusive Grandma that held Illario's pragmatic and ruthless instincts in check? Wasn't she in charge for quite some time? Didn't she mold him into that? Yes, she did. With regular beatings, starving both of the boys for failures etc. And yes, she might have thought that it was just to ensure their survival but she still made them - Illario especially. He is the ideal Crow and it is quite frankly nonsense that Caterina is that bleeding heart idealist like Teia. Teia is an oddball and Eight Little Talons (ELT) made that quite clear.
I actually have more to say about that quite frankly intellectually insulting statement of our dear darling John.
The rest of the Crows, on the other hand, are far more pragmatic and willing to work with whoever emerges on top of the pile.
Where are they John? Why is everyone in Treviso a suddenly heroic Crow? Even Crows who have no business being that (Caterina, even Viago was not like that in ELT). I ask again, where are those pragmatic and ruthless Crows that should be very clearly the majority? You just had no interest in portraying the faction in any even somewhat controversial light, hence why you did not include a single one of those properly. And the one that we do get (my love Illario) got character assassinated and hit with the black and white thinking stick. Nuance is evil, especially in Veilguard.
3. Governor Ivenci
I will not make a single Crow post without talking about how stupid this railroading into hating them is. Veilguard's message is basically "every politician and reformer bad...but also we will only endorse democratic reform in the slave nation". Pick a bad message please, not two contradictory ones. Veilguard has a hate boner for everyone who only reeks slightly of authority, unless they are three Magisters who are against violent revolution to tear down the system...it is weird.
Ivenci (without that idiotic betrayal arc) is more in line with characters like Josephine, Anora, Celene and Vivienne. Veilguard treats that as something horrid to be opposed bc the real answer is to support a continuous mob rule. Alternatives are bad.
It is honestly baffling for a Shadow Dragon Rook especially to be railroaded into supporting the thedosian equivalent of the mafia instead of proper change that would benefit the people too - a civil government. You cannot even consider the idea. The messaging around that is just so bad. "Yes, the mafia ruling is great! They care and they fight for your freedom!"
Ever considered that this is a bit of a PR play of the Crows to be able to say that they are necessary freedom fighters? I read that in a VG positive post lately and it would be a great point that this is how mobs operate...now if only the game would let us engage with that, consider this, question critically (Rook is the most uncritical protag ever...piss poor investigative journalist lol).
4. Crow Rook
Last point but I cannot end this post without analysing Crow Rook real quick.
Crow Rook...everyone take a deep breath please and protect your brain cells. Crow Rook is the worst of the Rooks, easily. A scrappy rebel who defied orders to save some prisoners that somehow included Varric in Treviso (???). They are good and heroic! Now if there wasn't this one uncomfortable fact...they are a paid killer, Bioware.
Rook too was trained from a young age to be an assassin, someone who kills people for money. Someone who should feel nothing while taking a life and be good at their job - the way Zev (debatable) and Lucanis are. But no, Rook is forced to be this heroic, sarcastic, idiotic muppet who is a hero through and through and never did anything too bad in their life (actual dialogue with Bellara).
Now if you are a fan of headcanon, you can use that line as a dark headcanon that Rook does not consider their work to be particularly bad. Kinda like Zev says that "some people simply need killing" and also Lucanis isn't particularly remorseful, though with him we have to acknowledge that he picks his contracts himself and only those who deserve it, never people who are too young etc...(ehh?).
But no, Rook did nothing bad, ever. Even though their line of work requries it. Even though they are a literal criminal in every sense. Part of the mob etc. It cannot be reflected by Rook themselves that they might have been a bad person, it cannot be reflected what they think of the Crows as a whole, whether they like being a Crow or not (when they most likely had no say in their recruitement) etc. Rook likes it, the Crows are great, Rook is even greater, both are heroes.
5. Were the Crows retconned?
Yes. As my careful investigation showed, they were quite heavily retconned, character and faction assassinated, sanitized and turned into the palatable and family friendly mob. The dark elements were all but striken or played for hopeful endings (that the narrative actually treated like that, instead of throwing a side eye at the crows seeing it as hopeful...maybe through Rook commentary? Ah well)...the characters were turned into idealistic messes (even abusive Grandma who is not even that bad...the narrative never paints her as bad or flawed at least)...bah.
And with these final words I will leave you and see you for the next post. That one will be about the problematic of the Qunari. I am already going through the codex entries of DAV and previous games to compare it properly.
I need coffee...
