BACKSTORY:
born as the oldest child to louie and kat, julien grew up in a small brooklyn apartment with his younger sister. money was always tight and while they managed, it was never without stress. it was something he noticed from a young age and he naturally took on looking out for her as they grew up. the sinclairs had a long-standing connection with the carrington family, who were in a much better position financially. there were times they helped out when things got bad. he never forgot that, but he also never liked how it looked from the outside
while still in school, he picked up jobs wherever he could. he didn’t like sitting around while his parents were working so hard and he wanted his own money. the idea of being stuck in the same position his family became something he wanted to avoid at all costs. he didn’t want that kind of life forever and he definitely didn’t want it for his family. he made it a quiet goal to do better, mostly driven by a deep fear of ending up with nothing
school was never where julien stood out. he got by, but focusing was always difficult. in junior high, he was diagnosed with adhd. it explained why things felt harder than they should have, but it didn’t really change how he approached things. his grades stayed average and he relied more on figuring things out as he went. he was good at sports and it eventually led to him earning a scholarship, giving him a chance to continue his education. while some questioned how he got certain opportunities, he tried not to pay much attention to it
julien didn’t really have some big dream career mapped out. he tried a few different things, kept his major pretty general while juggling jobs on the side. nothing really stuck until he found himself drawn to real estate when he and josie moved to the west coast. he ended up sticking with it because well, it pays well and he does like the work, especially helping people find a place of their own. deep down, he’s always wanted that kind of stability too.
after losing their close family friend, he kept going to work, went out more and didn’t give himself much time to sit still. he tries not to think about it, especially how it happened, usually finding somewhere else to be or drinking just enough to keep it off his mind. he tries to be there for his loved ones when it matters but most of the time, whenever people at the building start bringing it up, he’s quick to deflect or suddenly have somewhere else to be. even he can tell his habits aren’t exactly great, which is part of why he starts going to therapy. whether it’s actually helping or not, that’s a different question
