ivystjamess:
suddenly ivy found her and julien’s rules swapped. in an instant, she felt slightly hurt, and very frustrated that he was encouraging her to go. “are you joking?” she asked, face stiff. that obviously wasn’t the case, so ivy didn’t hesitate to unleash her own onslaught of questions onto julien, “do you not think that i’m capable of making my own career choices? like, why does it matter what casey and my dad think, doesn’t it matter what i want?” the longer she spoke, the quicker her pace became as she stared at him in disbelief. then the frustration gave way to hurt, “does it not matter to you that we aren’t like, in the same city?” she asked, shaking her head. ivy was no doubt frustrated, but it was tender, rather than destructive. a change. “i just don’t understand that one moment you’re totally upset that i wasn’t forthcoming, but now you think i should just go? jules, cmon. i wanna be in new york, i wanna be with you.”
💥
Uh oh. As soon as Julien said what he had to say, he watched as Ivy’s face flashed from frustrated to hurt and then back to frustrated and so on. He hadn’t meant to hurt her feelings or upset her. It was the opposite, really. “No, I think you can make your own decisions and stuff, and obviously it matters what you want,” he said defensively, squeezing his eyes shut as he tried to string together a coherent sentence out of his jumbled thoughts, “but your dad and your agent...they’re like older and wiser and have been in the industry and...I don’t know! Don’t you think maybe they know what they’re talking about and stuff?” He finally opened his eyes to look at her at that point, instantly regretting having said anything at all. “Of course it matters,” he said quietly, tenderly, as he wrapped his arms around her again and shrugged, “I don’t wanna be away from you. I just...don’t want you to like...lament me or whatever.” As she expressed her frustration with him, he kept his eyes downcast and nodded to show he was listening. “Can’t both of those things be true...?” he stammered out in response to her question. As Ivy put her foot down and told him what she wanted, Julien took a deep breath and decided to ignore the nagging in his heart and just accept it. “Okay,” he relented, forcing a smile as his nod became more enthusiastic, “okay, if that’s what you want. I just...as long as you’re not just doing it because of me and stuff.”
