Kit stopped joking the second he realized he was being judged. Blue eyes narrowed and his knee started to bounce a little bit harder. “Whatever, man,” he said as he shot up with more speed than humanly possible. “Forget I asked.”

What an awkward situation. Natalia watched the boy’s thumb mess with that lighter, a small spike of irritation growing in the middle of her chest. She hated fidgeting almost as much as she hated– well, that was a list that could go on for miles. Still, this one time, she could let it slide.

Besides, she hadn’t expected a work-related excursion to be the end result of her coffee break.

“Stop moving your hand.” A command. Though her words were casual, friendly even, but there was still an intensity in her eyes that betrayed her smile. There wasn’t a Rostek in their ranks whose face she didn’t know. It was hard to learn names, but faces? Those were forever.

Stll, every now and again, there were occasions where Natalia devoted herself to learning names. Where she thumbed through a person’s file all afternoon, absorbing every little detail she could about their identity.

It was a fortunately unfortunate thing for Natalia Lazareva to put a name to your face. Kit Yelchin, her little Lesyas spy, would come to learn that eventually.

But not yet.

“Have we met before?” she asked, though certainly they both understood the way her words were meant to dust this seemingly bizarre conversation beneath the rug for any eavesdroppers. This is our first contact, her words screamed. There’s nothing to see here. “I think I’d remember you.”

Kit laughed. No, it wasn’t the appropriate response. Yes, he knew it was in poor taste, but the sheer absurdity of someone asking him to sit still was funny. Kit never sat still. He never stopped moving some part of him. When you spent your life moving faster than humanly possible, stopping became a foreign concept.

So, he stopped with the lighter, but the second he took a seat his left leg started bouncing at a super human speed. He immediately wondered why he sat down in the first place.

He knew this was a thin ice scenario. that if he pissed Natalia off she could really fuck up his day. She could get him into a lot of trouble. She could, shit, she could have him removed from this assignment and placed somewhere else. That would suck on a lot of levels, not least of all because he liked it with the Lesyas.

But none of this was blatantly obvious by the way he seamlessly started talking as if this was a perfectly natural conversation.

“Mm,” he said with a shake of his head. “No. I have one of those faces, though,” he said, quickly gesturing to his own face, as if that made perfect sense. “D’you stop by this side of town a lot?”

It was most likely in the spy’s favour that Ivan wasn’t the most extroverted. He had taught himself to be distrusting of nature. After all, you never know who you can trust and who has the right intentions. If he wasn’t on a mission, in the interrogation room or training at the mansion, he was most likely locked away in his quarters, dabbling on things to pass the time. He couldn’t recall ever having had a real conversation with Kit and he always felt bad whenever he didn’t did his best to befriend someone among the Lesyas. He hoped this could be a change for the two of them.

“Do you know what they’re talking about?” He asked, lowkey shifting his attention to the couple. He never wanted to eavesdrop, but this time he’d make an exception.

Kit, on the other hand, was very good at eavesdropping. It could be argued that it was easily what he was best at. He leaned forward a little bit, elbow perched on the table, and soon he pointed at the girl. “She’s angry because he works all the time,” he quickly pointed at the guy. “And he’s mad that she slept with his best friend. Although, I’m pretty sure he’s just mad that she didn’t wait for him? I don’t know, it’s hard to say.” He looked back at the other and shrugged. “Humans. Who knows? Could be anything.”

“Deal with a little education, as if, you shit,” Luka grumbled under his breath. With a huffed sigh he crossed his arms and Kit’s drink was suddenly jerking off of his hands and into the boy’s chest, spilling whatever remained in the cup down his front. “Oh, oops. You must’ve made some ghost pretty angry.”

Kit opened his mouth to speak but was soon silenced by the chill of water on his chest. He looked down, frowned deeply, then looked back at up Luka. “You’re an asshole,” he said with a small scowl as he dug his elbow into the other’s side before heading for the door. Now he was messy and, ugh, Kit hated mess.

“You’re here early.” Ivan spoke, looking down at his wrist, showing a dim electric watch shining through his skin, while nearing someone from behind. “Or… I’m just late. I suck, I got caught up into something and… thought I’d have time to make it here after.” The man spoke, his voice unscathed from any dialect or accent. Neutral Russian was what left his lips, those that could adjust to various other languages, dialects and accents whenever he had or wanted to. “Hope I didn’t keep you waiting for long.” The man spoke looking up to face the person in front of him again.

The last thing a Rostek spy wanted to do was fall under the gaze of the Lesyas interrogator. He was glad for the time and effort he had put into deepening his cover story. Hell, it almost wasn’t a cover story anymore. He preferred the Lesyas, cowardice kept him stagnant. But the Lesyas had accepted him, and he didn’t expect this to be any different.

“I’m always early,” he said. His leg bounced at an unnatural speed as he spoke. “Super speed will do that to you. But it’s fine, I got to watch a domestic dispute through the window,” he said, pointing to where there was still a couple arguing on the sidewalk outside.

She’s not the type of woman you say no to.

It’s a truth that lingered in the air around her, plain in her heavy gaze. Natalia Lazareva sat alone at the back of Kafe Pushkin (truly alone, without that bothersome second shadow lingering near– no easy feat nowadays). Why, she’d placed herself voluntarily in the heart of Lesyas territory was a mystery not even she could solve. Peraps she wanted to test them in broad daylight, a silent challenge. Perhaps she meant only to feign ignorance, to create a stir.

Maybe she just wanted you.

Sensing a nearby presence staring at her intently for just a moment too long, she threw a glance over her shoulder, a feline smile curving along her lips as she raised her cup of tea.

“Take a seat,” she said over the rim, gesturing with a flippant hand to the chair across from her. “If you insist on lingering, the least I can do is indulge your curiosity.”

As soon as Kit saw Natalia, his entire body seemed to freeze for a second. What was she doing here? Kit had spent months building up a cover story with the Lesyas. If an interaction like this one went south in a public place, his cover could be blown. And normally, that would just mean a pay cut and going back to the Rosteks, but now it meant another loss, a human loss (though he used the term human loosely here.)

Of course the entire time he was stuck in this thought, he was doing more to blow his own cover. Kit Yelchin didn’t ever just simply stand still, but here he was, trying to gauge what this was exactly, probably looking a lot like a fish out of water.

Finally he just sat down, lifted his brow a little. He pulled a lighter out of his pocket and fiddled with the striker, holding Natalia’s gaze. “I don’t think I’m the one here indulging curiosity.”

Oh, fuck you, you fucking motherfucker shitty piece of shit Kit. Luka almost wished he had telepathy to share that, but the brief twitch of his nose and the downwards curling of his lips probably got his message across just fine, too. It was another tedious five minutes before he was picking up his phone and drawling out with little care to dramatization, “Oh no, my friend is dying, I must go help. Good talk, man.”

The old man seemed unbothered, and Luka’s glare was deadly as he approached the familiar stick figure, lighting a cigarette once he reached Kit’s side. “Good fucking luck next time you need me for anything, asshole.”

By the time Luka approached, Kit was nearly rolling with laughter. He tried to hide it behind his drink, but he wasn’t exactly doing a great job. Kit stood and looked the other over for a second, shifting his weight from foot to foot. “Oh, come on, that’s bullshit and you know it. You could deal with a little education. Smarten you up a bit.”

“Oh, boy, that is… such a riveting story,” Luka drawled, not even bothering to look at the old man who was sitting beside him telling some story or another about some dumb war that happened a million years ago. Luckily for him, he caught someone’s eyes from across the room, and quietly mouthed, “save me.”

Kit sat across the room minding his own damn business. Okay, maybe he wasn’t minding his own business so much, because he was absolutely watching Luka from across the way, but at the very least he wasn’t trying to put himself where he didn’t belong. For one thing, he didn’t want to end up stuck in a conversation about the cold war and for another, watching Luka struggle was sort of entertaining. So when the other sent him that look, as cute as the plea was, Kit just grinned at him, rubbing his hand in quick back and forth motions along the top of his head, feeling the buzz-cut of his hair. The shake of his head clearly said: oh no, you’re on your own.
