Chair and Sofa Cushions

My mum made cushions – 6 for our heart chairs and two for the sofa.

On winter mornings, we felt so cold when we sit on the chair without cushions. From now on, I can hide under the table (by the way, this is also new, my dad made), have a seat whichever I like and enjoy having a siesta – sounds perfect!

It is also good for her students studying while sitting on this warm chair. That makes everybody happy!

New Bike Saddle

My mum is a cycling enthusiast now influenced by my dad. This week, she got a new bike saddle – women’s comfort saddle – and asked dad to replace previous one with this one. She said that the previous one wasn’t very efficient over a long run, nice looking though, causing pain and discomfort, and ruined her enjoyment of cycling. With a boom in women’s cycling in the UK because of the London Olympics 2012, my mum started cycling when she moved back to Tokyo. However, to be honest, she is still an entry level cyclist, I think, and has never tried a long run.

“It said that this plush saddle was for female riders with fully experiencing the joy of riding,” she murmured to herself and went on, “Let me have a go!”  and set off ….. Well, let’s wait and see!

New background in Anchovy Studio

The other day, my dad made a new background board in the studio and painted it grey. It looks absolutely great. “Well done, dad!” I murmured, and quietly went near the new grey background. Dad said to mum proudly: “June, look at Pinot sitting on the chair, posing! He likes my background, doesn’t he?” “Absolutely, surely!” mum replied with a big grin.

He is going to take a lot of portraits from now on, and to spend a lot of time with friends and sometimes with me.

Today, Chizuru-chan came over again with some upholstery remnants for my mum. Mum wanted to make small cushions with them.

“Voilà, anchovy pizza!” In return for the fabrics, dad made pizza for lunch, of course topped with anchovies. To tell you the truth, he wanted to try his new rolling pin, and to make perfect thin crust pizza at home.

I’m not interested in their lunch at all, but I’m enjoying being with them in the garden. What a lovely day today!

Manon & Pinot +November 18th

The other day, Manon-chan, one-year-old French girl from London, visited us with her mother. There weren’t any toys for her here, she played with me, patting me on the head, grabbing my tail with all her might, chasing me while crawling very fast... ... “Pinot! Pippy, P…” “Ah, au secours!”

This morning, my mum said: “You know, we moved back to Tokyo from London today exactly four years ago, on the 18th of November 2012. (with a sigh) Well, it’s been four years since then. Time flies, doesn’t it?” “Yah, absolutely!” I nodded my head. She kept talking and told me that after a long flight, how much she felt relieved at the airport when she saw me again sitting in the cage.

“Mum, I’m happy. I love my life here in Tokyo with my dad and you. I was very ill this spring, but I’m fit these days, you know.” “Pinot, I love you, totally, completely, definitely, heartily, entirely, eternally, sincerely, er… ” she listed up all the adverbs she knew, and embraced me softly and narrowed her eyes.

“Drink to our health!” my dad shouted for joy. “Happy life in Tokyo! Cheers!” “Cheers!” We happily made a toast.

柿の収穫

たわわに実った柿、本日いよいよ収穫！ ちづるちゃんが手伝いにきてくれている。と思ったら、物干竿のように長くて大きい、『タカ枝ばさみ』とやらを長身のちづるちゃんが振り上げたのだから、たまったもんじゃない。恐ろしくて、ボクはすかさず家の中に逃げ込んだ。

大収穫に歓喜している三人とは違い、元来柿には全く興味のないボクだが、裸になった木を見ると、柿の実をつっつきにやってくるやかましい小鳥達に、もう昼寝を邪魔されなくなるなあ、と思いつつも何だか寂しさを感じた。

「あっ、あそこにも、あっちにも。まだ二つ三つ残ってるよ、ダディ！」 「あれは小鳥達のためにね」 「へえ……っ」

この干し柿は、いつ頃あまくなるのだろうか、穏やかな晩秋の昼下がりにふと思うボクである。

Premium Nagasaki Sara-udon (fried noodles)

When Masako-chan came here the other day, she brought some boxes of noodles as a gift. Today, for lunch mum opens one of them – sara-udon (fried noodles), and starts cutting some vegetables, meat and seafood.

Mum: Lunch is ready! Dad: Coming!

D: Oh, lovely, isn’t it? M: Yes, absolutely! D: Ah, very good, isn’t it? M: Yes! 

D: Yum-yum...

D: Really nice, isn’t it? M: Yah! D: Yummy, isn’t it? M: Yah. D: Yum-yum… M: Um…

How many times has he said!? That’s enough! Dad, you’re a bit overacting. Don’t forget there’s your son here waiting for his lunch – starving!

Gold Joint

Masako-chan came over last night from Fukuoka and stayed with us overnight. Now I understand why she visited us this time. This morning another friend, Midori-chan, an instractor for gold joint, appeared. As she arrived too early for her workshop, she popped in. And an hour later, she left our house for the workshop in Tateishi. And then Masako-chan and my mum joined her later.

“I’m home, Pinot! The workshop was brilliant!” mum said in a big voice. She showed me her first work proudly, two small plates repaired and put makeup with gold joint beautifully.

“Wow, amazing! Well done, mum!” “Don’t touch them – still wet.” “Ohhh, all right! I won’t! Wet wet wet...”

Happy Birthday!

“Happy Birthday, Pinot!” my mum said to me in the morning. “Oh, is it my birthday, today?” “Yes, you are eleven years old today. Happy Birthday!” “It’s been 11 years since then. Time flies, doesn’t it?” my dad murmured.

I don’t have a wonderful meal for my birthday, just renal food as usual, but it doesn’t matter because I’m very well and I can bring joy to dad and mum.

I’m a birthday boy, today! I’m very happy with dad and mum kissing me happily, hugging me tightly.

Dad said to me softly: “Pinot, stay in my arms. Well, it’s time for medicine.”

Jesus! Help, help, heeee ...

Horikiri Waterfront Iris Garden

The other day, I vomited food a lot. My dad took me to hospital immediately.

I am feeling much better today. Mum said to dad: “Pinot looks fine, and the weather is lovely today. I’m going cycling, darling!” “Oh, I’d like to come with you,” he replied. “Sure!”

“Pinot, enjoy taking a siesta! See you later!” mum said to me and they went out together pushing their bikes. That’s just what I needed – charming, that is!

After a while, “Pippy! We’re back! We were really lucky. Look at this picture! Irises in full bloom, large flowers on tall stems – absolutely beautiful!” mum said with a big smile.

“Mum, I had a good sleep. Let me go into the garden, please!” “Be sure to take medicine after dinner, sweetie!” “I promise. I love you, mum!”

Feeling much better with vigorous clematis

I am feeling better and better each day, have a good appetite. As I demand strongly and persistently, dad and mum often let me go into the garden, with my harness though.

What a beauty! Last spring dad and mum bought a young clematis plant at Flower Festival for Buddha, this year the plant has stunning pink flowers – amazing!

We love clematis. In London, we had vigorous clematis covering our garden fence completely – absolutely beautiful!

We all know that by summer this clematis will be a blanket of satin pink bells.

Oh, Jesus! Mum is coming downstairs with my basket. I don’t want to go to hospital. I don’t need it, really! Where can I hide myself? There! Quick!

初めての入院

ボクは突然、食欲不振に陥ってしまった。毎日、駆け上がり、駆け下りていた大好きな階段も、ゆっくりと、一歩、一歩に。 そんなボクの様子にマミーは酷く心配になり、翌日無理矢理バスケットに押し込まれ、立石動物病院へ。 検査の結果、腎機能不全という病気で、即刻入院となってしまった。ボクにとっての初めての入院は、一週間になるのか二週間になるのか分からず不安だったが、もう一日遅れていたら、一大事になっていたという。マミーは冷静さを失っていた。愛猫の突然の病気告知のショックと、ダディが旅行中で不在だったためだ。それに、何より、年末にした健康診断で、尿素窒素が高めだったのに、まだ大丈夫だろうと、再検査を後回しにしていたことで、「無責任だった。ピノに申し訳ない」と、酷く悔やみ、深く心を傷めてしまった。

マミーは毎日面会に来てくれた。一日中、点滴というチューブにつながれて怯え、ケージの奥で、うずくまっていたボクだが、入院三日目ぐらいから、やっとマミーの手のぬくもりと呼びかけに応えられるようになった。 「あっ、マミー、ニャン！」 その後、順調に回復して、嬉しいかな一週間で退院可能となった。 「ピノ、ごめんね、ごめんね。良く頑張ったね」と、マミーは安堵したようで、目に涙があふれていた。

だが、翌日から毎日、飲み薬と通院点滴の無期長期治療が始まったのだった。 まだあまり食欲はないが、体調はだいぶ良くなり、かなり元気になってきた。ダディが戻ってきてからは、ダディが毎日ボクを病院に連れていってくれている。「明日は点滴お休みしましょう。」と獣医さんに言われ、元気になってきたご褒美に、ダディは、ハーネスをつけてボクを庭に出してくれた。 やんちゃ坊主の頃はハーネスなんてImpossible！到底我慢できなかったのだが、今はなぜか不思議と気にならない。ああ、ボクの庭だ。なんて気持ちがいいんだろう。

もう少し食べないと、もっとやせっぽちになって、衰弱してしまうなあ。まずい腎臓食でも頑張って食べれば、点滴も週一になるというし、この病気でも、もっと元気になって、長生きできる猫もいるらしい。ボクは６月に１１回目の誕生日を迎える。

今日は穏やかな日曜日。マミーの心もやっと落ち着いてきたようだ。あっ、また薬の準備をしている。マミーに悲しい思いをさせたくはないけれど、さあ、こっちも逃げる準備をしないと。 ダディに朝晩、強引に飲まされる薬に、悪戦苦闘しているボクである。

Happy Wedding Anniversary!

今日はダディとマミーの結婚記念日だ。しかし、その事をふたりはすっかり忘れていた。今朝、ボクのロンドンの親友・アルフィーのパパから、’Happy Wedding Anniversary!’ と、メールがきて、 「えっ、今日、何日？ ええっ！？」と、マミーは気がついたというわけである。

日々の雑務に追われているせいなのか、もう重要視する必要のない、単なる通過点にすぎないからなのか。たぶん後者だろう、とボクは思う。まあ、気にとめないほど、穏やかな空気が流れているということかな。

ロンドンに住んでいたときも、隣のおばさんからの封書をひらき、 ‘Happy Wedding Anniversary!’ の文字が飛びこんできて、マミーは、 “Oh, my God!” と、感嘆の声をあげ、気がついたことがあった。

まあ、こんな風に暢気なふたりにとって、他人の結婚記念日を忘れずにいてくれる知人友人は、何とも有り難いものである。

まあ、ボクにしてみれば、ふたりが結婚記念日を忘れても、何も支障はきたさないのだが、、、ボクの誕生日さえ覚えておいてくれたなら…？？？

「ジューン、行くよー。まだー？」 ダディのマミーを呼ぶ声が聞こえる。 ふたりでサイクリングに出かけていった。

Happy New Year!

Happy New Year! Ah, New Year’s Day, what a lovely morning – beautiful!

Yesterday evening, a newly married couple, Chika + Maru-chan, brought the most beautiful sake ‘Daiginjo’, to my dad in return for taking photographs at Anchovy Studio. And this morning, dad gave me tuna fillet as a new year’s treat – absolutely beautiful.

Dad asked mum, “Last year did you get rid of that one? Er… what do you call it, that one for the … …” “The butterfly for the New Year’s sake, ‘Otosocho’. Of course not! It’s there, in the cupboard. But, be sure to put it properly. Last year, you put it upside down on the bottle, you know.” “Oh, really? I never knew that.”

‘I don’t care about it. It’s just a paper butterfly, fake one. It can’t fly anyway,’ I murmured.

Due to this warm whether, I feel so sleepy. My new year’s resolution is … well, er,… What can I have for dinner? It might be a sea bream. I can hardly wait. I love the New Year’s Day. Yum, yum… Zzzz…zzzz…

健康第一！

今年ももうすぐ終わりのようだ。ダディとマミーは大掃除をしたり、出たり入ったりして、何やら慌ただしい。おや、ボクのトイレも洗浄してくれている。今年もありがとう、ダディ！

先日、二人に連れられて、年に一度の予防接種と健康診断に行って来た。今年も無論、血液検査のため血をぬかれた。血液検査は４段階あり、 「まだ１０歳だから、検査項目の少ない一番シンンプルなAでいいわね」 とマミーが待合室の壁に貼られた料金表を見ながら呟いた。 だが、診察室で、 「もう１０歳６ヶ月ですから、甲状腺機能も調べておいたほうがいいですよ」 と、若い女性の獣医さんに言われて、マミーは高額のCをやむなく承諾。なので、まだかまだか、というぐらいたっぷり採血されてしまったのだ。 　 その検査結果が今日届いた。去年の結果があまり良くなかったので、マミーは、自分の健康診断の結果を見るよりも不安で、ゆっくりと封筒を開けた。 すると、、、７０点。全体的には良かった。だが、基準値を超えている気になる項目が、、、それは、尿素窒素！ 肝機能？ マミーは予想外であったようだ。 昨年も、やせっぽのこのボクが!?　と、中性脂肪、コレステロールの高値に、大大大ショックを受けたのだった。ボクの庭にやって来るまるまる太ったヤツらなんか一体どうなるのか、天文学的数値だろう、と、夜空を見上げたら、ボクは星子ちゃんのことを思い出した。ああ、逢いたいなあ。

年が明けたら、ボクは超音波検査を受けるらしい。そんなに痛くはなさそうだが、また病院に行くのか、と思うと何だか気が重い。人間にしたら、ボクはもう５０代後半。いやいや、まだ５０代だ！ でも、自分のため、そしてダディとマミーのため、仕方がないだろう。健康第一！

今年もいろいろあったなあ。来年も頑張ろう、と心に誓うボクである。

柿の収穫

今年も柿が見事に色づき、毎日、小鳥たちが熟した実を突っつきにやって来る。渋柿だが、木で完熟すると甘くなるようで、彼らはなかなか賢いのだ。 ボクは窓際で、小鳥たちが来るたびに、小刻みに震えながら威嚇するのだが、彼らに完璧に無視されている。

ダディが高枝ばさみをかかげている。いよいよ、収穫の時が来たようだ。 たわわに実った柿を慎重に、且つ、豪快に枝ごと切り始めた。 ハハハ、これでもう、チューチュー、アイツらに昼寝を邪魔されずにすむゾ！

ひとつずつ丁寧に洗って拭いて、そして、渋を抜くために、焼酎かけて大きな袋の中に。なかなか大変な作業だ。それに、昨年好評だったので、今年も干し柿を作るようだが、これがまた、けっこう手間がかかるのだ。 ヘタを上手に残して切って、洗って拭いて、そのヘタをひもで結んで、「柿の玉のれん」の完成だ。

マミーが再び庭に出て、どこに干そうかと良さそうな場所を探している。ボクも一緒に探してあげたいけれど、庭に出してもらえないのだから、仕方がない。

しばらくして、マミーは適所を見つけ、つるすことができたのだが……

「あっ、いけない！」と声を発した。「皮をむくのを忘れたわ!!」

ダディとボクは思わず顔を見合わせた。

Good news! – a baby girl was born.

Our friend, K-chan living in London, gave a birth to a baby girl.

By accident or in disasters, some people die everyday. I watch this sort of  sad and shocking news on television everyday. But, today, our population has increased – absolutely good news!

When K-chan last came to our place (I cannot remember when though), her tummy was very flat, I thought. Today, she emailed us her newborn babe’s photos – unbelievable!

My mum told me that K-chan was already planning to visit us again next spring with her beautiful baby. To tell you the truth, I don’t like babies – crying all the time – I have highly sensitive ears, compared with humans.

Next week, two little girls, our relatives, are coming here for their photo session, chasing me while shouting my name, grabbing my tail and touching me all over unnecessarily. Just imagine! It must be a wild day, surely, running away saying “Mum, help! Anybody help!” Oh, dear dear!

To K-chan, Congratulations on the Arrival of Your Princess, so precious, so sweet.

By the way, I was so sweet when I was a baby, my mum said.

“You’re still sweet, my sweetie!”

Chinese tea set

My dad is a Chinese tea lover, has several kinds of Chinese tea. Every time when he has guests, he offers Chinese tea. My mum loves English tea. So, there are a lot of tea in this house. Incidentally, I’m not interested in any tea.

The other day, my dad got a Chinese tea set – a pot and cups in a special case – from his friend. Since then, he offers some tea with this tea set happily. “Would you like some tea? I’ve got very nice Chinese tea. And look at this!” he puts the tea set on the table, proudly. All the guests have to have some tea – almost compulsory!

Dad loves entertaining. Mum smiles at me.
