Smith could feel himself unstitching at the seams, and he didn’t want anyone, no less June Fletcher, to witness that. He should apologize – he knew that much – but he couldn’t bring himself to do it, couldn’t bring himself to be sorry for something so trivial right now. June didn’t deserve this, but then again, she also had walked into the emotional minefield of Smith’s mind without realizing it. “I have a free,” he said distractedly. “I’m allowed to be here. I’m a prefect.” Something’s happened to your father. The words kept trying to invade his every thought, making it hard for him to focus on anything else. “Can you just– go? Please?” His voice broke on the final word, his eyes flicking away from hers, refusing to let his pain be on display for everyone to see. “Find another courtyard, I’m sure there are plenty open.” He tried to offer her a tight lipped smile, but it came off more as a grimace, more as a plea for help than anything else.

      Smith had made the grave mistake of telling the stubborn brunette to leave. His second mistake came with the crack in his voice. June had this tendency to not listen to the demands of other people, especially when there was something wrong with them. It was like there was this obsession to help others, even if they didn’t want it. 

                                    Perhaps because she was not able to help her own brother. 

      " You may be a prefect, but you’re not the boss of me. “ Tone was challenging. Even the way she stood, arms crossed and head held high, portrayed her stubbornness. There was something wrong with him. She was not blind nor stupid. She could hear the pleas for help hidden in his lying words. June could see all of that, because she did the same. Just noone had heard her pleas for help. So, she dared him to even dare kick her out of there. The Ravenclaw would do what noone did for her: STAY. “ Smith ------- just....---- what’s wrong? This is not your usual self.” talk to me.

It was almost a relief to discover her interruption was June; of all people it could have been in the school, Ainsley was thankful that it was her. Though she regretted the way she reacted and her stomach plummeted, her brain caught up with her and she couldn’t help but grace the girl with a small smile, “You need to stop calling me that…” But the narrowing of the Ravenclaw’s eyes pulled the smile from her face and back to the question she was presented with. Straightforward and to the point, June’s question was simple. Ainsley pulled her posture straight before letting her shoulders slouch, “T-There’s not, I just… the lockdown just has got me on edge, that’s all. Heard some whispers and I’m still just-…” she said before trailing off and feeling a sense of uncomfortable anxiety creep up her back.

                              It worried her. Ever since they had returned there had been someone off about Aisnley ; like something was blocking that bright light withing her. June was afraid that, that light would be snuffed out. Like hell she would allowed that. Hazel eyes soften as the other stumbled her way through an attempt at an explanation, wanting to ask ‘ just what ‘ but refraining herself. She could not understand why everything was affecting the blonde so much. The questions asked and the lockdown. Maybe June had just become so good at hiding her worries and pain that she expected the same from others. Perhaps, that’s why she jumped to the rescue every time anyone showed any distressed. The silence stretched between the two before June plotted herself next to her, pulling her legs to her chest. A tiny and comforting smile being returned. “ You know you can talk to me, right? “ At least, June hoped she did. “ I can tell you this: sitting here all gloomy and --- “ eyes flickered down to the piece of parchment she was holding. “ writing it in your diary won’t help whatever is bothering you go away. “

Penny almost relaxed at the playful gesture and felt guilt rush through her bones t the way she had snapped. She had to reign herself in a little more, such aggressive behavior was unneeded and quite frankly a little too base for her as well against her anti-violence oaths and promises she’d made to herself. Penny sighed and run her fingers through loose curls, calming herself so she could shakily put her drawn wand away, “Sorry, sorry, I didn’t mean to snap at you June. Promise.” she put on an apologetic face as she awaited the thirst years to finish their trip down the hallway, an air of disappointment still around her form. “Kids are inconsiderate and certainly rude. I had more of a problem with them dealing with their problems with a wand rather than a word first. It’s why they got points taken off and detention. I should think my own House thanks me, though I still don’t care much about the House Cup.”

    The brunette carried her own that would come out to play every now and then. Mostly when someone messed with her plans. Not like she had noticed the change in the atmosphere since the lockdown. Everyone seem to be tense about the current situation, meaning people were either becoming more reserve or lashing out. June tried to do neither. She still kept her head in her books and a smile whenever she saw anyone. It was only understandable her fellow Ravenclaw was lashing out. It made sense why and that’s all the logical girl needed. “ Don’t worry about it. Everyone is on edge lately. “ Though she seriously doubted that the current world problems were the reason those brats were fighting. More like immaturity, which made June roll her eyes in agreement. “ They were hexing each other? They could seriously hurt someone, so, yeah, that was a reasonable punishment. “ A shake of her head in disbelief was given. “ I mean, with everything that is going on, looking forward to something positive, even if it is just the House Cup, is better than nothing. “ Ever the optimist. “ All that aside .... ---- have you been sleeping well? You don’t look so hot. “

The letter had come at breakfast, and, upon first glance, Smith had thought nothing of it. Sure, his grandfather had written him yesterday, but the two of them were in constant communication. There was nothing strange about that. However, one read made his entire body go tense, and he was on his feet, heading for the large doors of the Great Hall as quickly as he could without drawing attention to himself. He’d planted himself in the nearest courtyard ever since, skiving off his first lesson of the day, staring down at the piece of paper. Something’s happened to your father. He kept reading them over and over as though suddenly they might change, as though more information might miraculously appear, but it never did. He was only jerked from his reverie when he heard footsteps approaching, his head snapping up at the noise, his expression becoming guarded almost instantly. “You’re not supposed to be here,” he said sharply, with as much authority as his prefect’s badge could manage. “Go back to class.”

    Eyes had glanced over at Smith during breakfast. Noting that he had gotten a letter and moments later walked out of there. It seem off, but June decided to not question it at the moment and instead went on about her morning. It wasn’t until her professor let her out early ( for being a little too head ) that she crossed paths with him. Seeing him in the courtyard just reinforced her theory that something was wrong. Smith was a prefect, skipping class was not like him, at least that’s not the way June saw him. Immediately worrying, she walked over to him. The small smile that had been on her face disappearing at the sharp words she got. Instead of the usual kind expression, he got furrow brows and narrow eyes that looked him up and down in disbelief. “ I don’t think you can really say anything to me considering you’re not suppose to be here either, “ she retorted, “ so, how about you take down the authority macho persona down a bit. “

Since the end of the lockdown and the commencement of regular life, Lennox had felt off. It wasn’t anything obvious or tangible - there was just this sort of shifting thing inside of him that he’d always labelled as instinct, and it told him that something was wrong. Not with the world or the school (he didn’t presume to have that much intuition), but something inside of him - like the lockdown had dislocated something important, and he was left searching for it everywhere. That was how he found himself out in the grounds after curfew, not minding the fact that he’d lifted the prefect schedule from Smith and made sure no one would be here when he wanted to be. It wasn’t the act of rebellion that made his blood pulse a little bit faster as he stepped out into the dark sky, but the fact that it was outside - fresh air, the stars overhead. Nature helped Lennox to think, to reflect; maybe here he’d find some kind of peace. 

He walked south, heading away from the castle and the windows filled with flickering candlelight, toward the black lake, which moved silently like a giant black snake. Lennox liked water but the fact that he couldn’t swim made him hesitate a good distance away, hovering uncertainly as he looked at the rippling water. Maybe the problem was the fact that he’d been shut up without his permission during the lockdown - the loss of autonomy had left a bitter imprint on his mind. That made sense, Lennox decided; it would suffice, at least. As he took a few more steps, quiet in the dark and almost invisible, he heard footsteps on the pebbles of the lake’s shore - shoes over stone, quiet but not quiet enough. Lennox fumbled for his wand, holding it out before he cast a lumos to illuminate a figure. “What are you doing out here?” he asked, the light shining right in their eyes accusingly.

Just focus. One more page. Words of encouragement were her mantra that evening, not realizing that the sun had set long ago. June typically studied nonstop because she wanted to be the best. Lately, it was because she needed something to occupy her mind with. As if classes were not enough to stress the brunette out, the world had to add this government dilemma to it. Her parents involved with the same people that seem to be hunting down those they deemed half-breeds. Those same parents had a half-breed son. One that June seem to be remembering more lately. They had been so young when he had been taken away from her, but somehow her mind conjured up memories of that night. The screams she dreamed about. 

I have to get out of here. Stuffing the books into her bag, she practically ran out of the library, realizing she did not want to return to her dorm. Not feeling the slightest tired. At least not enough to want to sleep. She just needed to breathe. Her muscles tense all the time. Nails that were typically well done were now chipped from biting them. The bags under her eyes seem more defined. With one glance behind her, she headed for the main door. Despite being the poster child for academics, June did not really care much about rules. At least, not today as she tossed her backpack and set to jog. Hoping the wind, the burning sensation in her legs and lungs would be enough to ease her mind. It wasn’t. After about half an hour of jogging, she began to slow down into a walking pace. Fingers frantically running through her hair as she breathed heavily. Truly believing she was alone in the darkness. That was until a bright light blinded her and made her step back. Hand rose to shield her eyes. “ No offense, but that is none of your business. “ She replied. “ You also have no right to question me, Mr. You-Are-Out-Here-As-Well. “

She couldn’t stop the conversation she overheard from repeating in her head, over and over and over. Tucked away in a solitary corner of the courtyard, wrapped in a deep maroon jumper and warm, grey snood, Ainsley had taken to penning a letter to her mother. She wasn’t sure if she should mention it to her, risking Kasimir being caught and intercepted - though he hadn’t reported anything back to her yet of such a thing - but had written on in French about her classes and such things regardless. “Is there something you’re not telling us, Corbin?” echoed in her mind. Caught in deep thought she had not heard the other person approach until they spoke up, causing her to jump, keeping a grasp of her parchment and making a move to grab her wand from her front pocket. “Merde!” she almost shouted before coming to her senses and calming herself, “Désolée. Sorry. Didn’t hear you turn up.”

    That the Ravenclaw preferred the company of her books over people was no surprise to anyone. In fact, it was the stereotype that the brunette fell prey to. But, if you asked her she would say she was not a victim to the stereotype that surrounded her house. She did not attend parties, but she was still a normally friendly person. She had friends -------- right? There was one person she was sure was her friend, a certain blonde beauty : Ainsley. 

    A smile popped up on her features at the distinguishable figure of her friend who was just huddle away. She could spare a few minutes for her, June thought, fixing the strap of her backpack before making her way over to the solitary girl. “ Bonjour, belle ! “ A bright smile ready to greet the girl. What greeted June made the smile drop. Observant eyes caught the harsh movement towards her wand and those same eyes immediately narrowed. “ Wasn’t aware we had a serial killer running around that you had to be afraid of. What’s wrong ? “ June was not even going to bother asking if she was okay, because it did not take a genius to see that Ainsley wasn’t.

“Fifteen points from Slytherin, and detention this Friday. Now go, get to your next class.” the third years were being extra snippy right now, and a skirmish in the hallway with the addition of a stray knockback jinx that caught her ankle put her in just the right enough mood to start handing out detentions to the wayward jumbles of thirteen-year-olds. She crossed her arms over her chest, her wand twitching at them as they scurried down the hallways, and away from the prefect. It was rare she gave out both detentions and took away house points but fighting in the hallways was not among those rules she was lenient about. She heard a cough behind her and she stiffed, “What? Think I was too harsh on them?” she was moody now, maybe a tad more aggressive than normal when she turned around, her ankle still throbbing from the spell and her hipbone no doubt bruised from hitting the ground. 

    Arms wrapped around her books, hair up in a messy bun, clear that the brunette had just gotten out of the library. Somehow, despite having dark bags, she still had a smile on her face as she walked down the halls. Her path stopped by some third years being scowled at by a familiar blonde female. An unstoppable chuckle erupted from her throat, sounding a lot like the clearing of a throat. June had merely been a bystander and hadn’t meant for the girl to turn around to speak to her. The aggressiveness she was greeted with was another unexpected thing. Eyebrows rose slightly before she furrowed them in playful seriousness. “ No, m’am! “ Hand rose to salute the girl. Not wanting to let the aggressiveness get to her. “ Do you know how many times those little rascals have bumped into me and made me drop my books? Plus, fifteen points! Ravenclaw thanks you. “

When in deep concentration, Hamish’s eyebrows furrowed rather comically as his eyes never quite left the half-finished bouquet on his work table. It was a carnation arrangement, in shades of pink and soft white, with a dash of the baby’s breath. It’s very easy to get carried away when making a bouquet, so half of his concentration was dedicated to making sure he did not stray away.

He was too busy to notice someone stepping foot into his humble and tiny nursery. It wasn’t until the clearing of a throat that made him jump, eyes in mild surprise as he stared at the figure standing in front of him. “I… how can I help you? We’re not open today in case you didn’t see the sign I made outside,” He added with a smile, now feeling guilty that he was about to deny someone’s presence in his personal space. Many events have occurred in the past few days- his bullies trashing his nursery and the lockdown, and Hamish thought the personal time and space was necessary.

Despite everything that had happened, June could not shake this heavy feeling. She attempted to forget the meaning of today by doing her work ; revising a paper that did not need to be revise ; pacing up and down her room. The brunette truly believe she could get through the day without sending anything to him. Her brother. He could dead for all she knew, but, deep inside, there would always be that part of her that hoped he wasn’t. A part of her that hoped that today he would grow a year older. 

“ Dammit,” she cursed under her breath as she stood up, tossing the book to the side and walked out of her dorm. June felt like she had to send something. Even if it was just a --------- flower! She vividly remember hearing and seeing a little nursery that sold flowers. Wanting to get this over with, she hurried to said place and barged in. A smile already in place as she prepared herself to speak, but at his words her expression visibly fell. “ Oh! “ she paused looking around before meeting the boys eyes. “ I’m sorry, thought it was open. Just wanted to see if you could sell me a flower, but ---------- it’s okay! “ Maybe this was a sign that she shouldn’t send anything.

He had a brief of moment of realization - that he knew that she had noticed his blushing and stuttering. Feeling as self-conscious as always, Theo simply dry swallowed and let his hands fidget nervously, then tucking them into his pockets just to keep himself from making his hands fly all over the place. “You look very graceful.” He says in the smallest voice he can muster without actually whispering. It feels like he’s lying - and at the same time, it doesn’t matter. He doesn’t want to expose anyone, to make himself look like the victim of anything, as a sixteen year old boy, he should be able to stand up for himself right? still he laughs quietly at her talking about herself versus heels and runs a hand through his hairs, before putting back into his pockets. “That sounds…a little painful, I never really got into sports, I’m not– particularly ungraceful I think?” He had delicate hands and a very calculated way of moving, not taking up space. He blushes one shade deeper when she brings up his name. “P-please, call me Theo.”

           " Oh, but dear Theo, don’t you know that appearances can be deceiving? “ The Ravenclaw asked in her utmost serious tone. The only thing that gave her away was the smile that never ceased to leave her face. But, how true her words were despite the playful aura around them. June was far from the confident young witch she came off as. That’s why she tried so hard to be the best ---- because she wasn’t. And, because she knew how easy it was to lie to yourself and others, she did not see Theo as just some nervous boy, despite that being quite adorable. There was always more to a person than they let on. 

Wrinkling her nose, she nodded. “ Just didn’t like the idea of being all sweaty and tired? I don’t know about you, but I rather be in my cozy bed, with cozy pajamas, and accompany by a bowl of popcorn and a book. “

" Jaime, you don’t have to compensate for my time, but not like I’m going to say no to food and drinks. Anyways, we have ourselves a training sessions, then! See you there in half an hour? “

June was probably the most brutally honest person that Astoria knew of, but when she saw the disbelief in her face, she knew that at least June didn’t think the dancing was something silly to be doing. It felt that way, considering Tori was a person of facts and things that were considered boring by some. What she wasn’t expecting was the girl offering her hand, bowing, asking her for a dance, and the Gryffindor immediately laughed. “You want to dance with me?” she asked, clutching onto her stomach in an attempt to stop herself from laughing. There was no way she was letting this opportunity go though, she she reached for June’s hand and grinned. “Let’s see those moves of yours, Fletcher.”

The question was answered with a nod of her head. Most people knew June as the workaholic. Always studying, never having fun. There was so much more to the young brunette than that. Just like Astoria. Two ‘ serious ‘ people finding a chance to break their every day character with each other. No one had to know about this, and that was the beauty of it all. So, she grinned widely as Astoria held her hand. Letting her body move freely once the music started up again. Not giving a single care about her less professional moves. Hand was placed on the others’ waist, moving across the room. Playfully twirling the other and stepping back for a moment to strike a silly move, as well. The dance was wrapped up with June dipping Astoria. That bright smile never fading. “ Our own little secret, Astoria,” she promised with a whisper before returning the girl to her standing position.

June was looking all cheeky, smirking as she looked at her, and Astoria tried desperately to brush off how embarrassed she felt to have been caught dancing by brushing her hair out of her face. “Merlin… Okay so you saw a little bit too much-” Tori bit her lip as she saw June smiling, ever happy to have seen her do something other than writing her articles or schoolwork. “I- I started having dance classes when I was seven years old, ballet… This dancing, contemporary… A few years ago. I realised I liked it better than ballet. Oh you won’t tell anyone you saw me, right? No one really know that I do this, it’s- Embarrassing.”

The smile was masked by an expression of shock and confusion at her words. “Embarrassing?” She asked in disbelief. That sounded like the most ridiculous thing to June. There wasn’t even a synonym for that word that she had used to describe what she had seen. “You clearly haven’t seen me dance then. That’s embarrassing.  In fact....----” the smirk returned as she stepped forwards. June placed a hand behind her back and offered her other one, slightly bowing. 

                                               “May I have this dance, m’lady?”

There stood June Fletcher, glorified book worm and walking poster child for the school curriculum at work. They were, at heart, two different people - June with her studious nature and drive to succeed, and Hux with his… well, his everything that seemed to work against those ideals. “Free? Not likely,” he laughed, shuffling the cards thoughtfully. “The last time I did a card reading for free was when a housemate came down with dragon pox and I was scared that taking his money would contaminate me and give me the pox, too,” Hux said, grinning up at June and squinting against the sun. “Do you have the pox, June Fletcher? Because if not, I’m sure your mummy and daddy make enough to let you have a few spare coins rattling around in your pocket - what’s a sickle compared to the rest of your life? You could walk away, but you might never know what it is your future holds - that possibility might haunt you forevermore from this day.”

It had been worth a shot, though she should have known better. While June was known for her academic achievements and giving advice to anyone that asked for it. The tale was different with Hux. He was quite the opposite of her. June knew him for his non-free card readings, which she did not judge him for. For all she knew, that was his way of making money. It wasn’t that she necessarily believed he held her future, but she caved in. Slightly curious as to what he would come up with. With an a teasing eye roll, she dug in her bag and found five sickles. “Just shut up and give me my reading, Hux,” she order just as teasingly as she tossed the money towards him and sat down before him.

The problem of being almost practically blind was that some things like losing his glasses caused horror to him since he couldn’t find them…without them. Being Myopic was certainly not his favourite thing. “T-thank you Miss Fletcher.” His voice always comes out small, the implied ‘sorry for being a bother’ and ‘sorry for bumping into you’ and ‘sorry for existing’, really at least he had acquiesced to just saying ‘sorry’. Hearing the glasses repairing spell made him sigh, shoulders coming down as he made himself smaller - like he wasn’t short and skinny enough. “Thank you.” Again, Theo kicks himself mentally for only thanking and apologizing, clearly eloquence wasn’t his deal. “A-ah, ja, I keep doing this.” Getting hexed on my back and breaking my glasses, says the small voice in the back of his mind as a bitter reminder that it wasn’t his fault. Maybe a little, for being an idiot or something like that. He sits the glasses back on his face and looks away from the Ravenclaw’s face, blushing lightly out of embarrassment. 

Observant eyes noticed the light blush that colored his features. It was, well, cute. Not that June mentioned it at all. She, personally, knew that she would hate for someone to point out her blushing. It would simply make her blush more, and it made sense that it would be the same for the quiet Hufflepuff before her. Instead, she smiled gently and shrugged several times. “For what it’s worth....---- I’m clumsy myself,” she naively pipped in. Unaware that he was being bullied. One of the biggest things she hated. “It took me a few years to even learn to balance myself on a broom. Don’t get me started on heels! I was a walking chicken with them. I didn’t have glasses to break, but I did have bones.” She rambled on. “Anyways, you are very welcome Mister Einhardt.”

“Heh, there… there is quite a few of us isn’t there? Oh, I mean, I’m probably a bit rusty with my throws and actually landing any goals. I don’t have any new tricks up my sleeve and I’m afraid one of the other kids might have had time to practice and come up with a new move to score goals.”

       " Hmm -------- well, can’t you always just find another spot to practice? Imagine your own goal post and I could even be your goalie! It doesn’t have to be necessarily the pitch, does it? But, if you really want the pitch, then just go for it. I doubt the other people there will murder you for practicing there. ”
