Now is the time to counter lies with facts, repeatedly and unflaggingly, while also proclaiming the greater truths: of our equal humanity, of decency, of compassion. Every precious ideal must be reiterated, every obvious argument made, because an ugly idea left unchallenged begins to turn the color of normal.

Remembering Gwen Ifill
Award-winning journalist Gwen Ifill passed away yesterday at the age of 61. She was the first African American and first woman to host Washington Week;Ā she moderated vice-presidential debates, was awarded fifteen honorary degrees, and during her years as aĀ journalist she āearned a reputation as a trusted reporter who asks tough questions, speaks authoritatively, and readily understands the complexity of seemingly simple matters.ā

āWe donāt have any hobbies. But we do try to get together a few times a month to judge people and complain about things.ā
Thereās your hobby!
A day before the referendum, Operation Croissant delivered pastry and messages of unity from across the English Channel.
I love this!
āIām working on my second doctorate and doing clinical research in HIV. Iāve always wanted to be a tenure track professor, but Iāve been questioning that lately. I imagined that one day Iād get to a place where I can do the research that I want to do. But Iām seeing now that itās more about doing the research that will get funded. Iām noticing a lot of disenchantment among my senior mentors. They donāt get to be as innovative as theyād like. Their primary task seems to be sustaining the institution. Itās not about doing the research that they think will make the most impact. Itās about going for the most likely money. Itās publish or perish. Fund or get fired. And education suffers as well. I love to teach, and Iāve always thought that teaching would be a big part of the process. But itās not emphasized. Because teaching is paid for by tuition. Itās āmoney in, money out.ā But research funding comes from outside the school. Itās new money.ā
I wonder if there is, or could be, a KickStarter for research ...
Liāl Donald
Liāl Donald has some more choice words for his schoolteacher in todayās Daily Shouts:
āDo I know the square root of a hundred and forty-four? Is that what youāre asking me? Of course I do. Itās absurd that you would even ask me that.ā
āPlease tell the class what it is.ā
āYou want ME to tell the class? Excuse meāarenāt you supposed to be the teacher? I think we can all agree that, if anyone around here is going to tell the class the square root of a hundred and forty-four, you should be the one to do it. If you even know the square root of a hundred and forty-fourāwhich, frankly, I have my doubts.ā

āI was a maintenance man for fifteen years. But then my mother got cancer and she needed somebody with her all the time. I had to cook for her, clean her, help with her medicineā everything. I ended up losing my job because Iād missed so many days of work. But by that time, I started to realize that I was really good at taking care of people. So now Iām studying to be a registered nurse.ā
Now you maintain people.

āIāve got a PhD in classical history. I think the goal of most academics is to publish something that moves the line of scrimmage ever-so-slightly. But instead of participating in the discussion, I spend all my time comparing myself to top scholars that Iāll never measure up to. So my goal now is just to be a good teacher. I figure that teaching is about forming relationships, and thatās harder to measure.ā
This would be hard to measure too, but I suspect that a good teacher has more impact than a publication that moves the line of scrimmage ever-so-slightly.
