Adventures in Dystopia

Here I am going to post the current story plan for my series Adventures in Dystopia. All published stories will be linked, and I will include a brief summary of each story, as well as progress.

Teenage Sidekicks- Being a teenage sidekick sucks. So, Henry tries to keep an eye on Danger Force, since they have decided it is their life mission to do just that.

Blackout- All Henry wanted was a drink. Instead he's running from his best friend. A soul eating bounty hunter, chasing him for a crime he didn't commit. He should just go back to Swellview. Also, the context for why Henry Hart was being chased by a bounty hunter, and why that bounty hunter is Jasper.

Causality and Consequence- Phoebe had not thought of Kid Danger in years, until she hears of his death.

Piper in College-This fic will follow Piper through roughly her time in college, up until she meets Jacob (From the Graduation fic). I have the prologue, half of the 'climax' and a few hundred words written for this fic. Thank you @bisexually-finger-guns for the idea, and for helping me brainstorm for this fic

Henry vs Drex-Henry chasing Drex after they face off in Danger Force. I have a vague idea of what I want from the story, but I want to focus on other stories in the series for now.

Henry visits Charlotte at Harvard-Total fluff. I played this story out in my mind, but it wasn't sitting right, so this is on the back burner, as I build out what's happening in Henry vs Drex, and the state of Dystopia.

Ray in Dystopia-Ray visits Dystopia, and he and Henry have some much needed conversations. This will bounce between Ray's childhood and him in Dystopia with Henry. I am currently building the outline for Ray's childhood, and would building Dystopia. I also have a few scenes started for this story.

The Illusion of Fear-Henry was almost never scared. Almost. Here are the times where he was. Or Henry's relationship with fear over the years and how it's changed

Hero League-Jasper and Henry are approached by the Hero League for their work in Dystopia. It doesn't go how anyone hoped. Just in the idea phase.

Graduation-Piper graduates and it brings the gang back together, told through the POV of her boyfriend. 31k completed.

How Far You've Come- Piper is graduating from college, and Henry is so proud of her. Can be read as a standalone, but is tied to a longer scene in Graduation.

The Statue- Henry visits the Kid Danger statue for the first time since the funeral. Also is a standalone, but due to it's ties to a longer scene in Graduation.

Can He Know?- Piper and Henry bonding over a serious conversation, that takes place during Graduation off screen.

Campfire Dinner- Charlotte and Henry have a heart to heart reflecting on where life has taken them. Can be read as a standalone, but is tied to a longer scene in Graduation.

Currently Campfire Dinner is the final story in this series. If I do any more stories that take place after the events of Campfire Dinner, it will be a new series.

This is just what I have planned so far. I have a vague idea for a time travel fic. I started it as Spanish practice, and it is not any level of readable right now, so it's not in the line up. Also, my longer stories keep spawning one shots, so this is just a vague outline of stories I know I will write for this series, and their level of development.

Episode 1: Personal Thoughts

One thing that I noticed in this pilot, and then started noticing throughout the rest of the series, is that this show is not about Captain Man and Kid Danger.

While we do see them transform several times, it’s not about them fighting crime, and most of the crimes happen off screen. Rather we are following the behind the scenes of crime fighting. What do crime fighters do when they’re not fighting crime? Would they use their fame and powers for their own benefit? And it doesn’t take an idealistic view of it, but it also doesn’t take a cynical view.

There are plenty of comics that deconstruct superheroes (The Boys, Watchmen, ect.) but I feel like this show captures both the good and the bad rather than making it gritty to be realistic. There are absolutely some wild plots, but that fits the existence of superheroes. They are able to use their powers to get out of tight spots, but there are consequences, and I think we see that with how Ray grew up and the pressure he is under in season one especially, but also with Henry in season five. 

Also, Ray was getting ready to retire. It was the reason he hired Henry, and that is a thread I am going to keep following, because at some point that changes. Also he's a lot more serious in the pilot when he's transformed than in later seasons. I feel like there was a more distinct delineation between Captain Man and Ray in this pilot, and I look forward to tracking that through the episodes.

Episode One Notes

Hey, so this has been sitting in my drafts for forever, but it's something I've wanted to do. My plan is to go through every episode and do my notes, then a separate post with my personal thoughts and opinions on the episode. Starting with Episode one.

Notes-Episode 1

It is a superhero spoof, not a superhero show, and I think that is important to remember going in

Compare it to Thunderman’s, Lab Rats, and Mighty Med

Captain Man-The most generic superhero name

The idea of Child Sidekicks and superhero media

Child sidekicks are not okay in the real world, therefore, for the concept of superhero media, we can not use real world ethics. Rather we need to use the ethics of the show/media. 

Charlotte is the cool kid in their group. Henry changes his mind when Charlotte disagrees with what he originally said.

Kris Hart uses Henry, Charlotte’s and Jasper’s names first. 

Henry uses Piper’s name first

Jasper uses Henry

Kris Hart didn’t know Jasper and Charlotte were over, while they’re all 13

Henry is not a good dancer (According to himself and Jasper)

Job was posted 6 days prior, and updated 5 hours ago when Henry looks at it

Charlotte uses Hen the first time she says his name

Gooch and his live plant are in this episode-there is a baby plant (Look out for in future episodes

Gooch intently watches Henry as soon as he enters. More than he notices the other customer wandering the store. (The woman)

Henry’s phone starts out as a blackberry esque phone when we first see it in Junk-N-Stuff

Jasper has the normal pear phone with an orange case

Henry is 13

Henry rolls with Rays questions, and matches his energy in the beginning of the interview.

Ray starts the trend of getting names wrong -Calls Henry, David

Ray asks if Henry likes him (Captain Man). He looks very unsure as he asks

Henry has incredible instincts. Especially in his fight with the Old Lady. 

He started moving before the gun was revealed

Started wrestling to gain control of the controller. 

Uses the wig to blind the bad guy

Ray is genuinely impressed with Henry’s observation skills

Captain man can’t be injured but can feel pain-Is known

Ray is 33 (He describes it as almost 34)

Ray makes sure Henry likes Captain Man, and is clear that the job of sidekick is to train to be Captain Man, not just be a sidekick. The job is becoming a superhero in training

Henry makes $9 an hour at the beginning of the show

Jasper left his $7 and canadian loony on the counter when shuffled out the door by Henry

Triple flash/beep means emergency

Double flash is just important

Sabotaged bridge over Jandy River-Called Jandy bridge

Cars in water-means people have died, search and rescue

Captain Man rescues drowning citizens

Captain man leapt into the water and saved 7 people from drowning

Captain Man called Henry Kid Danger, giving him the name

Ray made sure Henry knew what affirmative meant, but didn’t explain the tubes

Henry’s parents are incredibly inattentive -Henry walking in after his first day

Henry upgrades his phone-I’m assuming from his first paycheck.

Jasper is banned from the zoo

7pm Captain Man went to take down the Toddler

8:17 Henry hears about it and goes to rescue him

Jasper has an aunt

Ray did most of the fighting in the first episode, and told Henry to run, before they were locked in

Ray protects Henry in the explosion

He also goes to a random kids birthday party for Henry

It was over 2 hours before Henry showed up for Jaspers party

Jasper has a cat

Jasper’s reaction to Captain Man at his birthday party, is almost the exact same as Henry’s when Ray first transformed

I think Jasper interrupting Captain Man by hitting him with a Baseball bat is where Captain Man’s annoyance of Jasper came from

Ray continues the trend of wrong names by calling Jasper, Billy.

Henry slipping out of Jasper’s party and that being the start of him slowly disappearing from his friends lives. But also showing how much his friends and life outside of Kid Danger mean to him.

Overall I remember watching this when it was first released. Mighty Med was my personal favorite out of the Disney/Nickelodeon superhero shows that were out, but seeing how this was clearly poking fun at superhero tropes I thought it was funny and interesting. 

Now that I’m an adult, rewatching this episode, I noticed a lot of details in these first couple of episodes that ended up being followed through in season 5 which I thought was interesting.

Overall, I was being very picky when I originally watched this, and I feel like it is an underrated show that does not get talked about enough. It was so different from the other superhero shows at the time, and I really like that.

time for part 1 of my henry's clothes analysis! i have finished rewatching season 1 and kept track of what he was wearing. i only counted things he really wore in universe, so the shirt he wears during the little intro thing (where he says "it all just kind of happened") doesn't count, nor does what he wears in the dream in dream busters. also obviously i didn't count his kd uniform. "plaid shirt" is when he's wearing a fully buttoned-up plaid shirt (1 button unbuttoned at most), "plaid shirt & t-shirt" is when he's wearing a plaid shirt and t-shirt and the plaid shirt is partially or entirely unbuttoned so the t-shirt is actually part of the outfit

this is a pie chart of everything he wears. the smallest yellow slice is pajamas, the smallest green slice is a disguise

and this is a graph of the trend we see throughout the season with the 4 options he most often goes for

as you can see, henry starts out wearing a lot of plaid shirt & t-shirt combinations, but he quickly develops a more black-white philosophy - it's either the plaid shirt or the t-shirt. one thing that is consistent is that he wears hoodies a lot throughout the season

fun fact: in 1 episode, kid grounded, he sports the long & short sleeve combination not once but twice. and then it's never seen again

This is so interesting, I'll be curious if you cover some of the later seasons, because I have a head cannon he starts wearing more long sleeve tshirts to hide his scars

Okay no because objectively the funniest thing that could’ve come out of HD that didn’t was the reveal of a secret child by Ray and everyone crossing their arms like “this isn’t a surprise ray, youre a whore”

Ik that canonically during that whole walldog thingy mabob Henry was rly against actually doing any graffiti BUT I have a hc that he did end up tagging a few things and one day on patrol or whatever Ray passed a tag HENRY threw up and was like “wow do people not have any respect for anything nowadays?” And Henry is just like “yeah. What are your favorite moment and least favorite moment from the series (don't stress, it doesn't have to be your favorite/least favorite of all time, just whatever your favorite/least favorite moments are today)

Here are mine:

Fav moment: when Ray throws himself down the middle of the stairwell in Up The Stairs, banging off of every rung on his way down 10/10. Very cathartic, I have always wanted to do that.

Least fav moment: When Char and Schwoz spray Jasper with moth attract spray and force him to outrun all the moths in Swellview (not only did he literally say "I do not consent" and they did it anyway which I hate but also, as a person with contamination OCD and a Thing(tm) about bugs, this is my worst nightmare right here

oh god this is difficult and somewhat intimidating. this reblog might become a bit of a rant because i tend to think by writing out my thoughts so sorry about that in advance (though if you didn't want that you probably shouldn't have tagged me/lh)

first the favourite moment. the first to come to mind is in i know your secret when henry and jasper have their very heartfelt moment and jasper is like "i'm proud of you, kid danger" and henry is internally tortured by the prospect of his memory being wiped and then he convinces ray to not do that. i love this moment because i adore henry and jasper's friendship so much and this is such a wonderful moment for them when we really get to see how much they mean to each other

the second to come to mind is just like. the whole last four episodes. what i mean is the way it finally addresses the problems that have been building up throughout the whole show and it's so satisfying and well-done and i love it. but a specific moment... i think i'd go for henry and ray's discussion on the blimp and then henry choosing to sacrifice himself. because it just says so much about their relationship and both their characters and it's just so incredibly good and i love it so much

but to pick one... there are definitely more moments i love btw. like henry and charlotte's conversation at the zoo in i dream of danger and henry's fond smile at jasper in the end of flabber gassed and him cleaning jasper's face in love muffin (can you tell that i'm a henry/jasper shipper) and bigfoot telling the kids what he's heard about them from schwoz while schwoz looks on fondly etc etc. many such moments. but this is of course not supposed to be an exhaustive list, i'm supposed to pick one. and i think i'm going to go with the whole scene with henry and ray on the blimp and henry's sacrifice for the aforementioned reasons. it's just So Good and the show so desperately needed that kind of moment. so yeah. love that

now least favourite... it's kind of a tie between every single weird dan schneider joke. it just always makes me so uncomfortable and i hate it. but maybe also everything henry and ray were forced to do by frankini in live and dangerous, it's so clear that they're incredibly uncomfortable (to say the least) and i have a really hard time watching all of that. the laugh track during henry's breakdown in danger games is also a contender but i think i'll go with henry and ray being forced to do all those things in live & dangerous because the moment itself isn't my issue with that scene in danger games, just the way it was treated. the moment itself has provided me with a lot of fanfic and henry interpretation fuel. i guess all that in live & dangerous isn't really one singular moment but it'll have to do

Okay, just now getting to this. I don't think this is a super long one for me, but we'll see.

I think my favorite episode of the series at this moment is Mo' Danger Mo' Problems, just because it deals with the very real consequences of Henry being Kid Danger and the devastating effect it has on his personal life. But also because it sets the tone for how both he and Ray deal with that, though quick bandaide fixes and ignoring it. While, there are other moments in the show, I think there is a weight to the secret identity that isn't seen to the same levels until the finale.

Though The Secret Gets Out is an honorable mention. Charlotte in this episode was a huge role model to me for years to come. Especially, because we were the same age at the time of airing.

My least favorite episode, this one is harder though I think it is twin Henry's. I was super uncomfortable watching that final scene with Schwoz and I also skip that episodes on rewatches, though there are several moments like that in the early seasons. Don't have much to say on this other than, I don't like it.

It bothers me to no end when people make the argument that Ray should’ve known better with Henry despite never having an example of what to do right. Yes, Henry was 13. Ray was 8.

Henry was given outs a few times. Ray wasn’t. Henry stuck through it time and again because he actually liked his job, regardless of how miserable he became.

Henry does not hate Ray. He maybe resents losing all those years to him. But hate is not even in his vocabulary for that man.

And for a fandom hellbent on their dynamic being more father-son than brother/nephew as stated by Ray himself, you’re also extremely hellbent on pitting them against each other. So I’m gonna make my opinion clear this once.

Henry loves Ray. Henry understands Ray’s position, albeit a misguided one, probably more as an adult with his own young sidekick as of the movie. Henry had a choice and he made it. You can’t take Ray’s “you didn’t sign up for this, I did,” without erasing all the evidence presented to us that states otherwise from the very beginning.

I definitely make stuff up as I go. That's why I like to write the fic in advance then go back and foreshadow.

And sometimes I discover I had been foreshadowing and discover the plot twist with the characters

I properly watched the henry danger movie because it barely aired in my country LMFAO.... but I was rewatching it and this scene in the glimmers fic segment was really interesting to me

Henry (in response to Missy saying he was a sidekick in this story): "To Captain Man, yeah. Where is he? Maybe– maybe we can find him, maybe he can get is out of here!"

The reason it's so peculiar to me is the fact that, realistically, what the hell does Henry think Ray's going to do? Like sure he's a hero and all, great fighter, but I don't think he exactly has the abilities to somehow fix up the RAD and get them out of these weird pocket dimensions they're in. And Henry KNOWS this, it occurs to him later that if anything that would be Schwoz (who they do eventually find), but? The thing is, Henry wasn't even considering the way in which Ray would help them all that much. The moment the mere possibility of him being here was presented to him, his first thought was:

'I'm sure he can somehow fix this, right?'

I feel like this scene really shows how much Ray was, and still is a big part of Henry's support system. Despite the fact that they definitely don't see each other as much (and I'd argue in some ways, Henry has purposely attempted to distance himself from Ray), it's clear Henry never stops relying on him internally, even now. This man was his partner for so many years, that he got used to Ray always being there with him to aid him.

At least to me, it's very clear Ray's presence when he was younger really influenced him and shaped Henry into the way he deals with problems. Henry can handle himself, no shit, but there's always gonna be a part in him that's immediately going to turn towards not only Captain Man, but Ray Manchester when something goes wrong. No matter how old he is, he still finds himself needing Ray.

or maybe I'm just overanalyzing a simple scene idk . anyhow! I quite enjoyed the movie lol
