he takes a second to even his breathing, then rises to his feet.

does johns even have a weapon? or is he fighting spider-monkey style, all wiggling toes and bruce lee kicks? adrian would pat him-johns-self down, but that would require moving while a gun's trained on him. adrian's stupid, but he's not that stupid.

(in his own body, a bullet wound anywhere but the head or the heart would heal itself within days. he knows jackshit about johns' except the brief mutual exploration that lead to this fucking predicament.)

they get handed two slices of wedding cake. “that something you want? to get married?”

patrick accepts the drink gratefully, quick to bring it to his lips. it's from there that he speaks, glass rim to his mouth, tone dry, but not without appreciation.

"wow. for the third marriage? must be the real deal."

cake in one hand, champagne in another, he's mid swig when she posits her question. he chokes for half a second. swallows. tries to make himself presentable again. then simply gestures once more to the present table.

"I mean," a sly grin, "look what treasures await."

she considers the next play. if it's that obvious to the other woman, then there's no need to answer.
