i just can't believe how the relationship of obi-wan kenobi and anakin skywalker entered popular culture in 1977 with ben's wistful stories and then vader killing ben, beginning with the end of their story, then in the next movies we learned more about anakin/vader's past, and heard him mention obi-wan over and over while obi-wan lingered in the narrative after his death to explain anakin/vader, giving cryptic hints of how things were, then we looped all the way back to the beginning with the prequels in 1999, putting their relationship on center stage, watching them grow up and become best friends in the clone wars, and fall apart in rots and now almost half a century after it all began, in 2022, we've driven their story forward in time again, almost closing the loop and filling in all the gaps.

it has created such a dense, rich tapestry of a narrative of their entire relationship. their entire lives are tied together and told in detail in hundreds of shows, books, and comics. the core six movies have anakin's story running through them, anakin's tragedy, at the heart, as a foil to luke's story, and obi-wan is so closely entangled with them both, he becomes part of that tragic heart of all six movies too. since 1977, we've gotten so much more context for that iconic interaction between them on the death star, explaining why it mattered so much to both of them to fight, and all its done is shown that their relationship is a microcosm for galactic history as a whole in so many ways, just as anakin's life is the story of the galaxy told in miniature.

their lives defined their era and defined each other, and now that the loop is being closed and the cycle complete, the incredible length, weight, and complexity of their relationship stands out as being one of the best parts of star wars, even if it was never intended to be at its heart, it very much is.
