Taking a break from books, here are 6 lesser known animal movies. I’m not planning on doing another post on these, but we’ll see. Arashi No Yoru Ni (or One Stormy Night) follows an unusual friendship between a wolf, Gabu, and a goat, Mei. Given that Gabu’s pack regularly dines on Mei’s herd, certain conflicts arise. The emotional depth is handled very well, and on top of the pressure from their respective cultures to abandon the friendship they also battle with their own instincts. One says to run, the other says to kill. I don’t think an English version of this exists, but you can find the subtilted one on youtube. The Ringing Bell of Chirin (or just Rining Bell) is about a lamb that wants to become a wolf. This is one of the darkest children movies I’ve ever seen, starting as a cute, light hearted feature and transforming into a cautionary tale about revenge.
In The Plague Dogs, based on the book by Richard Adams, Snitter and Rowf escape from an animal research laboratory and try to survive on the countryside as wild animals. The public panics when they hear the two refugees might be carrying the bubonic plague. The movie differs from the book in a few ways, but the ending is most notable.
The Incredible Journey is Homeward Bound’s predecessor, telling the same basic story with a few breed differences (a bull terrier, yellow labrador and siamese cat instead of an American bull dog, golden retriever and Himalayan cat) and total lack of dialogue from the animal cast. They don’t talk. Instead we have a narrator leading us through their quest to get back to their humans. Now, I love Homeward Bound, I really do, but I had to mention this one. No puns. No jokes. No references. Just the story of three animals trying to find their family.
Ooohhhh, Watership Down, you crazy, crazy film. I don’t think anyone knows what they’re getting into when they press play on this movie. They don’t hold back on the violence portrayed in the novel (they actually ADD quite a bit). Maybe don’t show this one to five year olds, haha. If you know Samson & Sally I’ll be delighted. Samson is a white sperm whale calf that dreams of meeting his hero, the famous ship-wrecking Moby Dick. The story is part coming of age, part environmental commentary, and wow does it get scary. Samson encounters orphaned calves, whalers, a flaming oil spill, radioactive waste, Atlantis, hungry killer whales, and a trove of death. It’s pretty heavy but not really graphic.
