ouhuoh i do want to ramble abt my concept choices for her. Alas, i am sleepy. But this was super fun figuring out Temeraire-verse dragons and how id think they’d look, and im looking forward to making more!!

RAMBLE INCOMING BELOW

general Longwing notes:

for her overall body shape i wanted to err a bit more stocky and—idk, shorter?—to fall in line with the sort of traditionally western dragon body shape that’s often described in the series. I feel like she (and lots of other Longwings) would also be a little bit clumsy on the ground, particularly if they have to maneuver really quickly or run anywhere, simply from the shortness of their limbs combined with the weight of these big ass wings dragging behind them everywhere they go. I imagine they’d have like—idk, a scurrying, kind of rat-like gait to them? If that makes sense? they’re very hoppity dragons lol

But! all that loping and leaping around is kind of exhausting, especially if you’re trying to catch prey or win a foot race. solution! not simply long wings—long wings perfectly shaped for gliding, soaring, and diving (which also helps in venom-spitting formations. how convenient!). Trade-off: agility and speed (when not diving), but thats fine when you have the entire formation to defend you

4 claws (including a semi-opposable dewclaw-like thumb) on each talon for grabbing and clawing

Iiiiiiii also am planning to give all the dragons “tail wings” and most of the european dragons in particular some kinda nonsense spade thing on their tails. dragon anatomy haunts me every waking day of my life and it simply does not spark joy in me to see dragons doing these beautifully complex spinning turns and aerial maneuvers when they don’t have any way to slow their momentum apart from their tails (which are usually too long and thick to allow them to fly at all, and wouldnt do shit for dip in a free fall). so they get extra wings. I am electing to ignore where the muscles for all that are attached for now bc if i get into another spiral over speculative dragon evolution in the temeraire series i will simply cease to ever leave my evil house of leaves-esque wizard spire again (which leads to one of my silly headcanon: dragon surgeons are like that in the series bc they dont even understand. they doooooont understand. you think Dorset comprehends what he’s feeling when he’s elbow deep puttering around a dragon’s chest/shoulders/keel bone? you think Keynes doesnt drink himself to brooding every night, knowing himself and every other damn surgeon a fool and a fraud? dragons are just eels with wings and the porcelain sturdiness of a thoroughbred. stupid silly mystery to all. anyways)

Lily (and Longwings in general) have a “forked” spade on their tail like a snake’s tongue cause i thought that was preddy sly and clever of me. Also tried to make the white streaks on her wings look kind of liquid-y and fluid to represent the infamous Longwing venom

I dooont understand how the bone spurs work (<— guy who BARELY passed anatomy class last year). They do, however, fuck extremely nastystyle, so im inclined to overlook my utter lack of comprehension at their function and put them on anyways. tbh I’ll probably move them closer towards the nose in future drawings and form them more after (snakified) boar tusks cause i think itd look more cooler

I also personally feel like Xenicas and Longwings are the most agender/genderfluid of all the British dragons, with very little/no visible sexual dimorphism, so it’s harder for ppl to immediately assign them genders after hatching. I don’t think most dragons ever really think about their genders or form of address very often, simply because its not usually relevant—but the Longwings and Xenicas, since they exclusively prefer female captains, would probably be a little more thoughtful about it before declaring how they should be addressed. some even make it a little bit of a game switching back and forth before settling on a favorite, to their captain’s eternal endearment (and probably a few eggs’ cracked awakenings). unfortunately this also inspires a bunch of “fickle like females” misogyny jokes and stereotypes that are extremely cringe, old moth-eaten material that are cheerfully laughed about in turn behind turned backs (and also to their faces)

Lily notes:

- aehhhh not much to say. I simply imagine her to be pretty blue overall? and with a soft, semi-mammalian face to contrast more with her bone spurs. and i think she’s just a little bit smaller for her size since she hatched so early. yippe!!

Levitas/Winchester wip! ive decided to model them after passenger/racing pigeons and courier horses, but im not sure what to do abt the tail :/ i feel like it should be short and kinda stubby for less drag in flight, but i cant quite figure out a posing that feels right for it yet. oh well

Im also thinking of drawing some of me ideas for a modern au Temeraire. the dragons are given like. plane armor complete with mini “cockpits” for their captain/crews? and high altitude adjustable helmets + rocket boosters for accelerated height. also I feel like Iskierka plays 2000s club music at max volume through comms during dogfights (Granby does his level best not to go deaf and hoarse yelling their orders over her music). and sweet darling Temeraire has two different podcasts going at all times, on low volume because he’s considerate about his crew and wants them to be well-educated about the wonderful world they live in while they can still hear it (Laurence doesnt have the heart to tell him it puts him and half the crew to sleep 90% of the time either way, so their hearing isnt reaaaally that much of a concern)
