Fellas, can we please talk about the incredible talent of Michael Sheen? I mean, the way he reacted to Crowley during the centuries. Every single expression is a bit different.
You can watch a whole love story just looking at his face.
The first time, he’s a simple angel. He sees a demon and he thinks he’s going to face an enemy. Can you see the firmness and that hint of fear in his eyes?
Here, a little time passed. He understood Crowley’s not properly evil, but he considers him a possible enemy anyway. Yes, he seems to be friendly, but he’s still a demon. Can you see that expression of astonishment? He’s not scared, he’s surprised. He doesn’t think Crowley’s going to hurt him, he’s just on alert. But he smiles. Because seeing him is, in a sense, a relief. He was starting to get bored.
Can you see those eyes? Those are eyes of someone that was very, VERY bored. He just doesn’t care anymore that he’s a demon. He probably doesn’t consider him a friend yet, but he’s just so happy he’s there. Finally, something funny to do. He kinda missed him.
This is where the situation totally changes. They already have a deal, so Aziraphale knows Crowley’s not an enemy. He’s a colleague. Maybe more. Alright, maybe he’s a friend. Oh, the way he missed him. He’s so glad to see him. Can you see that little smile? How much it says? Crowley’s now a friendly face.
And this one, I mean, THIS ONE. This isn’t surprise, guys. This is the face you make when you realize that THAT thing you really want is actually happening. Oh, don’t tell me he was going to be beheaded. He wasn’t. A little miracle is better than being discorporated. He WANTED Crowley to be there. He hoped he was going to save him the whole time. And when he finally arrives, this is his face. He came. He came. This is pure joy.
And then guys, we have this one. This time he didn’t mean to be saved. He put himself in danger unintentionally. He thought he was about to die. When Crowley comes, he’s not relieved, he’s scared. So much more than he was before. Now he’s not the only one in danger, now Crowley’s in danger. He cares about him. But he can’t help himself. A little smile appears on his face. He’s still happy to see him. And this scares him even more.
That was just too much. He’s in love, he’s not even lying to himself anymore. That’s not gratitude, guys, look at him. That’s the face of someone that genuinely falls in love for the first time.
Just as like as this one is the face of someone whose heart got broken for the first time.
I’m not going to talk about this one, because I don’t want to spend the whole day on this post. I’ll just say that this isn’t a face. This is a wordless “I love you”. And it’s beautiful.
