@just-headcanons
I feel famous
The reason we never get to see Kurama shirtless is because he's actually really self-conscious about his body. He feels he's lacking compared to when he was Youko.
Despite an earlier claim I made about Kurama wanting a partner that could keep up with him mentally, he is in fact moronsexual
Random Hiei Headcanons
Loves The Great British Bake Off, and food shows in general
Actually a foodie but hasn't learned to cook very well
Secretly does ballet to improve his fighting (actually enjoys it)
Doesn't listen to a lot of music but enjoys Lindsey Stirling, Ava Max, and All Time Low (his tastes are eclectic)
His favorite song is Monsters by All Time Low
Loves to cuddle
Sometimes bursts into flames when scared
Loves cats
Once he learns to play video games, he's super competitive, especially with racing games
(Comes out of the shadows on Samhain to offer you a random hc before disappearing once more)
Karasu accidentally steals random things and isn't aware of it until he gets home.
"What's in my pockets...?" *starts pulling an absurd amount of things from his pockets* "oh no, it's happened again"
The Kurama Duality: My Very First Official Headcanon!
Ah, the Kurama duality.
I’ve been asked this a lot, and people seem to like my interpretation, so I figured I’d list my official headcanon here. I’ve gone into far more detail in my Kurama x Reader fic, Embracing the Seasons, specifically chapter 25, if you’re interested, but here’s a summary.
Let’s get something out of the way: Kurama does not have a split personality disorder.
Yoko Kurama and Shuichi Minamino are not two different beings. They are one and the same. Kurama explicitly says this in the English dub: “This is a merger, not a possession.” In other words, when Yoko Kurama escaped from certain death, he fused his soul with that of Shuichi Minamino, and they became one.
I think there are three aspects of this duality. I know, I know. It’s confusing because the word “duality” implies that there are specifically two opposing sides, but hear me out.
There is Yoko Kurama, the ancient demon, who was cold and cruel, and did all sorts of morally reprehensible things. He plotted and thieved, and probably killed anyone who stood in his way. While the dub isn’t explicit about the crimes he committed in his demon days, aside from stealing artifacts, I think, given Kurama’s feelings of regret, he likely made some horrible choices.
Then there is Shuichi Minamino, the human boy with whom Yoko Kurama fused his soul. As a result, Shuichi grew up with a soul that was at least half demon, and as such, he was probably not an easy child to raise, influenced by his demon heritage. Yoko Kurama’s intention, after all, was to leave Living World after he recovered from his encounter with Spirit World’s Special Defense Force. His mother, Shiori, showed him unconditional love and compassion, and it was through her tenderness that he came to love her.
But having these two disparate identities is a lot to handle. Here’s Yoko Kurama, who has a very demon perspective — no doubt, in Demon world, sometimes you just have to survive, and as such, Yoko Kurama is ruthless, vindictive, and cunning because he was successful at being just that. It is how one survives as a demon — on brutal instinct and carnage. On the other hand, here’s gentle Shuichi who was raised to be polite and empathetic with his fellow humans, who loves his mother and cares deeply for his friends. Shuichi is not Yoko Kurama, and even though their souls are fused together, Shuichi still has a childhood innocence, a naiveté about him. As he was growing up under the tender care of Shiori, Shuichi may have loathed her without completely recognizing why. And Shiori, bless her heart, may have attributed his misbehavior to childish tantrums. It wasn’t until he understood her selfless devotion that even the cold-hearted Yoko Kurama learned to love her, too.
These two equally valid pieces of himself are so different, their values and methodologies conflicting at times. They are impossible to consolidate.
To strike a balance, it was a third identity, Kurama, who surfaced to mediate between the two. He is able to harmonize Yoko Kurama’s ruthless and calculating calm with Shuichi’s kind-hearted, reflective nature. This is the Kurama with which the main YYH cast is familiar.
Again, Yoko Kurama, Shuichi, and Kurama are not different people, per se. They are one and the same, sharing the same soul. However, they can have wildly different tendencies, ambitions, and motivations.
In the English dub, Kurama refers to these aspects of himself as personalities or identities, which is perfectly fine, but I think such verbiage can lead people to think that he has a dissociative personality disorder.
I like to think of them as perspectives, and I use a glasses lens analogy to help interpret them. In Embracing the Seasons, chapter 53, Kurama explains to the reader character, his girlfriend, why he is so cold to her when he takes on his demon form:
“_____, I love you with every fiber of my being, as I’ve never loved anyone before. I promise you that. And thus, every component, every piece of my soul loves you as well. Even Yoko Kurama loves you. When I take his form, I may behave differently. It may help to think of each identity as me looking through tinted glasses of varying color. These lenses do not define my sight, but my mindset, my method of thinking.
“When I must be Shuichi, I see the world through a very human perspective. I live each day, waking up, going to work, doing my research, writing financial publications. I pay the bills, I shop for groceries, I spend time with friends. I live for my mother, for my stepfather, for Kokoda.
“When I must be Yoko, the glasses are tinted with another perspective. I see through the lens of a demon, guarded by instinct and ruthlessness. I am less concerned for the personal feelings of others, more focused on ambition, whatever goal is most prevalent. I have to be — this is how Demon World functions, ruled by the iron fist of power.
“And when I am Kurama, as you see me now, I understand both interpretations. I appreciate both perspectives and realize each have their strengths and opportunities. Right now, in Demon World and given the circumstances, Yokoʼs strength may very well be a necessity. Please understand that.”
In other words, when Kurama taps into Yoko Kurama’s strength and shifts into his demon body, he doesn’t magically lose everything that he learned as a human. Yoko Kurama and Shuichi are the same person, after all. He doesn’t forget what it means to be compassionate or understanding, but he may choose to disregard that piece of himself.
A really good example of this is in the Kurama vs Gamemaster episode. Kurama consciously made the choice to manipulate Amanuma, literally causing him to have a breakdown, and thus lose the game. He was crushed by this decision, riddled with guilt that he killed a child, but he knew he had to do it — otherwise, he and his team would have no chance at defeating Sensui.
Upon reflection, as confirmed by older Toguro/Gourmet who had stolen the mind-reading ability from Murota, Kurama was upset with himself because Yoko Kurama would not have even contemplated hesitating to kill Amanuma. He would not have wavered and potentially ruined his team’s only opportunity of escaping the Gamemaster’s territory. In other words, if it was Yoko Kurama who was in the same position, his demon perspective would have prevailed. He would not feel guilt or shame in making the decisions necessary to secure victory, not because he is heartless now that he knows what it is to be human, but because the existing goal was far more valuable to achieve than sparing a child’s life. Yoko Kurama can apply logic in a way that is so cold, so void of emotion that even Kurama may be rendered uncomfortable.
I could talk and write about the Kurama duality forever because Kurama is one of the most beautifully complex characters I’ve ever had the pleasure to come across. But, alas, I prefer not to bore you, dear readers. I hope you enjoyed this headcanon of my very favorite fictional love of my life, and please feel free to reach out if you have any questions or requests!
If you would like to reblog or refer to this headcanon in your own fanfiction writing, please feel free. A reference back to this post would be nice so others may enjoy it. <3
Pictures are obviously shots from the anime. I do not own them.
What would be the main four’s reaction to finding a a modern girl (of this day and age) who doesn’t belong in there universe on YYH? (Like she suddenly came from a portal or has been transported in Koenma’s headquarters?) And which is most likely to take an interest on her? Out of the four from most to least likely and why?
Hoo boy. You have presented me with a challenge and I shall do my best.
First, given that the yyh universe is in the 90s, a modern day girl wouldn't be too out of place, depending on her age. (I'm running off the assumption that she's a millennial or around there) Really the thing that would set her apart most would be technology. She'd likely have a cell phone on her, which would seem futuristic.
Second, I feel that "interest" needs to be defined in order for me to address it. The obvious is romantic interest. However, in this scenario, curiosity would likely be high too. So I will be treating the interest both ways, depending on the character.
1. Kurama
He would be interested in her for multiple reasons. Getting the chance to talk to someone from the future is an opportunity he can't pass up. Knowledge is power, and he likes to be 50 steps ahead at all times. However, the more time he spent getting to know her, the more he'd take a romantic interest in her. His initial reaction (besides curiosity) would be trying to figure out why she was here and how to get her back home. Unfortunately, as feelings develop, this would become a difficult moral dilemma.
2. Hiei
Despite feigning interest at first, he would definitely be intrigued. She's something new, something different. What he doesn't realize is that his curiosity is attraction. He's intrigued because he doesn't understand the feelings she's causing in him.
3. Kuwabara
Initially he can't believe she's really from the future. But then he has so many questions! Is Megallica still popular? What are modern video games like? And a lot of things that she really has no idea how to answer. Interest level: friendship
4. Yusuke
Surprisingly, his interest only lies in figuring out why she's here and how to get her back. He couldn't care less about the future or another world. To him it's just another thing he's been dragged into that he has to sort out for Koenma. That's not to say that he would be rude to her or hostile or anything. He just doesn't have much interest in her as a person.
(Sorry if this isn't what you wanted. I tried)
Not sure if you’re taking requests at this time or not, but may I please get a simple head canon of the main four’s type of s/o they’ll be attracted to? Like what’s their ideal type of partner? What qualities will they each find in a partner or what they need in one? (And would they care what type of race they were?)
Yusuke
His ideal partner would be someone who can both keep up with his boisterous personality and balance it out. (Keiko is the prime example of this). He needs someone who can put him in his place but not tie him down. He's not someone who needs to be "fixed" or controlled, but he does need an ass-kicking every so often.
Kuwabara
He's not just a fighter, he's a protector. So his ideal partner would be someone he can take care of. Not necessarily someone who can't take care of themselves, but someone who doesn't mind the "white knight" personality. He's a breadwinner and prefers a more traditional approach to relationships. As such, race is a bit of a conflict for him. While he tends to judge based on character, he has trouble accepting demons (as we see when he tells Yukina that she's "not like them")
Kurama
His ideal partner could keep up with him both mentally and physically. He's a bit of a caretaker, so he likes to be able to provide for his partner. What he really wants and needs is someone who can love all of him - human and demon.
Hiei
Trust is the biggest issue for him. He needs someone he can trust fully. Though he won't admit it, his ideal partner would be able to protect him. He wants someone strong who can defend him when times get rough, but won't ever use that strength against him. Preferably a demon, he doesn't have high opinions of humans.
For some reason, I lowkey see Hiei falling for a human being also despite of him hating our race so much. He says a lot of bad things sometimes about things and people but it’s funny how he ends up doing it also later or changes his mind from what he says. Which strongly leads me to believe that it is very possible for him to fall for someone that isn’t the same race as he is. If of course, the blessed human manages to change his mind after getting to know each other more. And seeing how Hiei can trust and tolerate them, he wouldn’t mind being with them if there is a connection between the two in some special way. As for them being strong physically, I think I could see Hiei look pass that if he really loves and cares about the person strongly. Maybe by then the person that Hiei has feelings for will make him want to become even stronger for them since he has already found someone he would want to protect besides Yukina. And him knowing they can’t defend themselves physically, is what will push him to train harder and stronger for them and not just for himself. Which another thing I find possible in seeing but maybe, I could be wrong in all this and this alone is just my opinion and possible headcannon for a Hiei love interest.
Yeah, I totally see where you're coming from. That's why I said preferably a demon rather than just saying no humans. I feel like he could look past their race if they managed to tick all the boxes, so to speak.
As for the strength thing, I could definitely see him wanting to protect his partner, I just also think ideally he'd want to be protected too, especially with his anxiety and abandonment issues. But again, if they managed to get everything else, it wouldn't matter. I guess I just focused on the ideal part.

Maybe I'm just looking in the wrong place, but I've yet to see anyone talk about the fact that Hiei was actively suicidal by the 4th season
Like he straight up says he went to Mukuro because he believed her training would kill him without him having to do it himself
I have so many feelings about this
In case anyone hasn't noticed, this is why a lot of my headcanons about Hiei have him depressed.
Sometime after the series Hiei gets to a good place. He spends about 70% of his time in the human world - not cause he likes it but he has family there, not just Yukina. For the first time in his life, he feels safe. Even in the demon world, he has the protection that comes from being Mukuro’s favorite. He’s reflecting on the strange new lack of constant dread he’s experiencing during dinner… then Kuwabara accidentally knocks a plate of the table and he has his first panic attack.
Yusuke is the first one to realize what’s happening - he had a few panic attacks as a kid after him and his mom fled his douchebag dad. He has Hiei put his head between his knees, stroking Hiei’s hair as Kurama catches on and leads him through some breathing exercises, interspersed with reassurances. Kuwabara goes to the living room to fetch Eikichi. He places her near Hiei who quickly snatches her up and holds her close.
He can’t make eye contact with anyone for the rest of the night - especially when Kurama pulls him aside to try to talk about his feelings. He feels ridiculous - everything’s fine, he never reacted like this when he was a kid and everything was scary all the time so why is he breaking down now. Eventually Kurama drags it out of him and he feels even more pathetic until Kurama hugs him.
They have a chat about how common it is for trauma responses to be delayed until the danger subsides - there’s no time for processing feelings when your survival is at stake. Hiei tries to deny that he’s ever been traumatized but a skeptical look from Kurama (that he sees from the corner of his eyes) silences his protests.
It’s not an easy or short road to recovery, and it’s not the last time something sends him into a panic - but for once in his life he’s surrounded by people who love him.
It doesn’t fix everything, but it certainly doesn’t hurt
How would the main four seduce their s/o? Or try to let them know they're in the mood?
(Oh geez, it's been like over a year since this was sent. *checks calendar* Well, at least it'll be in time for Valentine's Day.)
Yusuke
- does the phrase "art of seduction" mean anything to you?
- no? Good because it doesn't mean anything to Yusuke either
- "Seduction? Is that some kind of math? You know I failed that class."
- Nah, Yusuke has only two modes when it comes to letting you know he's in the mood.
- dtf and shy romantic
- if he wants sex, he's not going to be subtle about it
- however, if he wants something more intimate, he will do his best to be romantic
- rose petals, candles, the typical chick flick stuff
- he'll also be awkward about it
Kuwabara
- thinly veiled hints
- *you know, I have a bed... maybe we should lie down?"
- seduce? He can barely flirt
- you're lucky if he can get through a suggestion without nervous laughter
Kurama
- does the phrase "art of seduction" mean anything to you?
- cuz it should
- Kurama is the master of the art
- if he wants you, he will have you
- he adapts his seduction techniques to whatever you're into
- not in the mood?
- oh look, what a lovely pasta dinner
- BAM! Now you're in bed with him
Hiei
- as mentioned in other posts, Hiei tends to be direct
- he generally has no problem just saying "I want sex"
- however, if he's feeling... shall we say, frisky... he will tease you
- as in, light touches along your skin
- lips trailing kisses
- the kind of teasing that sends a shiver of excitement down your spine
(Seriously though, I have no excuses for how long this took me. I could give the usual "life got in the way, rough year, yadda yadda" but there's no point)
The reason Hiei grew so much over the course of the series (I’m talking physically, though he grew a lot emotionally too) is because he had a super inconsistent access to food as a kid (which stunted his growth). Now, if he needs food he just raids one of their fridges or has Kurama or Yusuke cook for him (Kuwabara is somehow a worse cook than he is)
Not a problem~ I’m just glad to know there are people still active on this site, and for Yu Yu Hakusho no less!! 😭💖 Thank you for all the writings you’ve made so far, and for those to come!
Hi! Are your requests currently open? I love your writing! If you’re taking requests, I’ve got a few 😄
I am, I'm just backed up. Request away! I just can't promise when I'll get to it.
Something has been on my mind lately. Kurama would no doubt be the perfect boyfriend/husband. But everyone has their flaws. Even our favorite fox boy. My question is: What would Kurama’s flaws be regarding a relationship?
I'm interested to see what people think. Those that are good at headcanons feel free to chime in
Kurama isn't great at showing emotions. Not that he doesn't know how to express his feelings, but rather how he expresses them. He tends to express emotions according to how he thinks that feeling is expressed. It's why sometimes his expressions seem exaggerated.
Depending on his partner, he can be overly controlling or overly accommodating. Either way, he's entirely self-sacrificial. He doesn't know how to care about himself. Or rather he cares more about his partner than himself.
He's also prone to jealousy, though he tends to hide it until he blows up.
Yandere Hiei and reader who is the sister to Yusuke? Please and thank you :)
What did you have in mind? Headcanons or fic? Sorry, this request was kinda vague, so I want to make sure I have a direction to go with it.
