What Once Was
08.02.06.
This was indeed a fine day for all who were ignorant of technology. People were found on top of trees, holding long knives and passing on coconuts after detachment. Natives linger around aloe versa, patiently extracting oils and transferring them to separate containers.
In the midst of the unknown, trees blossomed, it was almost as if each one was fighting just to occupy any spot they reach. People were so diligent to water and nurture each one, so particular in replacing any consumed plant, eager to grow a new one.
The natives need not to know about the wonders of the lands beyond where they were. For nature has it all. For their skin, clothes, food, and especially their crowning glory, their hair. They may not have the wealth of filthy money, but have healthy hair, acknowledged by the smiling sun from above. Allergens, irritants, toxins, carcinogens – they know not of each one.
Then came a time when what once was silent, exploded and became noisy, as modern invention emerged. Where the ignorant were left in awe, witnessing how convenient and easy it was to live life.
Numerous factories flooded places where once was fought over by tree branches. Green and black liquid joined what once was clear and calm. What once was purely from aloe came from plastic sachets and bottles.
These were convenient, yes these were. More productive work were done. More hair were nourished in a couple of minutes of opening the bottle cap, squeezing the liquid out, and massaging it to the hair. Head lice, dandruff, filth, and dryness were terminated easily. Instant results were seen visibly, and if the sun actually had eyes and mouth, they would be as round as its owner.
However, it was a shock to experience illness after regular consumption. It turns out that the components of the shampoo had side effects that are perilous to the human body. Allergens, toxins, irritants, and carcinogens have been identified, causing reversion of desired and expected result. Yes, these ingredients may be effective but they also remove natural oils and proteins, causing hair to be weaker and dryer.
What made this phenomena worse was when its harmful effects became more evident, not just to the hair, but ultimately, to the human body. The black crown fibers looked less like how it should be, and more like black hay, lifeless and ugly. The curved white protective barrier of the head which once was clean became a house of filth, both dark and white. The natives had no power nor right to feel wrath, and only dreamed to bring back what once was safe, instead.
Just like that. Just the click and clang of machines, just the emergence of chemicals, what once was lovely and healthy turned out to be weak and ugly. Nature was neglected, and replaced by altered chemicals.
Eight. Two. Six – these numbers simply define the genuine role of shampoo, of what it is, of how it should be. Eight letters – CLEANSES, Two syllables – STRENGTHENS, Six vowels – BEAUTIFIES, and not the other way around. After all, it is made to enhance rather than destroy us, and peril what once was.
