Keigo Takami x f!reader (coffee shop au)
A/N. this is long asf so sit down for this lmfao
Being a college student meant you were made of 80% caffeine.
Yeah, studying into the early mornings and doing your work on the bus wasn’t anything new to you.
And so when one of your proffessors approached you that you needed to drop one of your classes because of how unrealistic your schedule was, you found yourself with an hour of free time in the middle of the school day, not knowing how to spare it.
An overworked student like yourself didn’t really know what to do with the given break, and so you followed a few of your classmates to a coffee shop across campus.
You ordered a plain turkish coffee, the only thing that actually kept you awake and functioning during the day and sat down near the counter. You opened your notebook and laptop and decided to get some work done, going through your notes and doing some research for asignments due very soon.
You actually felt relaxed for the first time in a while, but your peace was cut short when your drink suddenly floated towards you, red feathers carrying it. That wasn’t the thing that startled you, although you were quirkless you didn’t get amazed by the quirks of others— it was the fact that the drink had spilt all over your notes and clothes. “Ow— fuck.” You cursed, grabbing your laptop out of the way before the spilt beverage could ruin the device. “KEIGO FOR THE LAST TIME STOP USING YOUR FEATHERS TO SERVE THE CUSTOMERS AND JUST CALL OUT THEIR NAMES.” A furious voice yelled, which made you look up.
A plump, elder woman was coming your way with tissues and a man who she had grabbed by his ear. “Ow, woman— jeez I’m sorry for trying to be efficient.” He groaned, quickly shutting up once seeing her murderous glare. “I’m so sorry ma’am, we will be happy to pay for any damage done.” The woman bowed, wiping the table off. “Goodness you must be a student— look at your clothes they’re all ruined.” She gasped, putting her hands on her hips.
You shook your head, dismissing her worries. “It’s fine, I’ll just go buy a shirt in the shop next door.” I sigh, smiling awkwardly. “I’ll be taking my leave now.” You say, gathering your things.
The two employees exchanged sympathetic looks, looking at the clearly frustrated woman in front of them. “Hey— to make up for the damage we’ll offer you free coffee for the rest of your semester.” The woman smiled, clasping her hands together. “And Keigo here will lend you his sweatshirt for today and you can cover those nasty stains with it and return it tomorrow! If you have time of course.” She said, helping you gather your things.
You take a deep breath, running a hand through your hair. “Really, ma’am, it’s fine.” You smiled, grabbing your soaked notebook. “I really must insist. It’s the least we could do.”
‘She really won’t give up, will she..?’ You muse, taking your book from her. “Fine. Thank you for your kindness ma’am.” You bow. “Of course, now.. KEIGO!” “I’m literally right here..” He deadpanned. “Oh! There you are sweetheart. Go give your sweatshirt to this young lady here since you caused the damage.” Keigo nodded, sending the woman a polite smile. “What a gentleman.” The woman whispered to herself before smiling proudly, leaving you to wait by your table as she went back to work.
The winged blonde came back just a minute later, handing you the sweatshirt with a slight smirk. “There you go ma’am.” He winked. “See you soon.” He chuckled at your reddened face. “Yeah, thanks.. see you.” You muttered, leaving the store as you slipped the piece of clothing on.
‘Can’t say it’s the most fashionable thing I’ve ever worn.. but it’ll have to do.’ You think to yourself as you walk back onto campus, a certain blondes smile clouding your thoughts for the rest of the day.
—The next day you arrived at the small café again. Today you didn’t have any free classes so you decided to drop by before your first lecture started.
You made your way over to the counter with the man’s sweatshirt in hand, smiling at the lady from yesterday. “Good morning! I came to return the sweatshirt to.. Keigo I believe?” You smile sheepishly, placing your order as she called the blonde from the back.
“Yeah wha— oh. Heya it’s you.” He grinned as he rounded the corner and locked eyes with you. He leaned against the counter. “You come to see me?” He teased, which made your brows furrow. “No. I came to simply return your sweatshirt.” You stated, sliding it over. “I washed it since the coffee stains hadn’t fully dried when I put it on so it was dirty. Hope you don’t mind.” You say, clutching the straps of your messenger bag.
He only smiled, nodding before going to make your order. “I’ll be right with you, ma’am.” He winked, which made you roll your eyes. ‘He’s one of those guys, huh?’ You thought to yourself, sighing.
Keigo soon put the order on the counter and called out your name. “See you! Good luck with your lectures!” He waved, dissapearing into the back again before you could respond.
You grab your drink, running to your lecture as you realised you wasted a little too much time in that café. ‘Stupid! I can’t get distracted like this.’ You think to yourself as you plop down into your seat, sighing as you try to catch your breath. As you set down your cup of coffee, you do a double take and riase a brow.
You’re like my coffee. You keep me up all night. ;)
You look at the stupid pick up line in amusement, shaking your head. ‘Well that’s real mature.’ You scoffed, but a small smile made your way to your lips. ‘Stupid blondie.’ You think to yourself, sitting back and letting yourself focus on the lecture.
—Two days later as you were getting ready for your lectures, your phone chimed with a message from your colleges principal.
We’re sorry to announce that lectures will not be held this week due to an incident involving villains.
We cannot disclose any further information. Classes will start on Monday next week.
Thank you for your understanding.
sincerely, the staff and Principal Lee.”
You read through the message and groan. ‘So I got up so early for nothing?’ You whine, plopping yourself back onto your bed. What now? Sure you could study, but your brain functioned better at night so it would be of no use.
You sighed, staring at the ceiling with a bored expression when the coffee shop came to mind. Should you go? What would you even do.. Your eyes drifted towards the unread books on your shelf, which made something in your mind click. You grab your bag and slip in a book, your wallet, headphones and keys before leaving your apartment.
The walk wasn’t long, you got there at about 10:13AM and to your surprise it was pretty stuffed unlike the last time you were here.
Baristas were running left and right, taking orders and serving the customers. ‘Yikes, so much for wanting to read in peace.’ You walk over to the counter where Keigo looked nothing like his usual care free self. His brows were furrowed, wings tucked in but twitching in what seemed like annoyance every now and then and his whole aura looked just.. sad.
You cleared your throat which made him snap back from his trance. “Welcome what can I get— You!” His eyes light up, his robotic voice switching to one of excitement. “Hey, you ghosted us for a few days! Lectures keeping you busy?” He asked curiously, leaning on the counter. You nod, running a hand through your hair. “Yeah, I was a bit busy, sorry about that. But I’m free for the week. Something about villains and lectures being canceled, y’know?” Keigo nods, writing something into the register. “Your order will be with you in a moment.” You raise a brow, completely caught off guard.
“How do you know what I was going to order..” He laughed as you looked at him like a deer caught in headlights, shaking his head. “One, this is the only thing you’ve ever ordered here. Two, you’re a college student that looks like they’re surviving on the last of their energy so I doubt you’ll be changing this order anytime soon.” He smiled smugly, but he wasn’t wrong.
You grabbed the cup after he set it out for you, going to sit down outside since that was the only place where you’d be able to sit at the moment.
You set the cup down, grabbing your book before deciding to check the cup out of curiosity. And of course, there, in black ink, another flirty message awaited you.
I envy the cup of coffee that gets to kiss your sleepy lips awake every cold and bitter morning</3
Your cheeks burn a bright red as you look inside the shop through the display window, and of course, the red winged man was staring at you, leaned against the counter without a care in the world. He sent you a wink before walking to a table that needed assistance.
A frown painted your face as you set the cup down, grabbing your book that you almost forgot was the whole reason why you came here.
You got lost in thought as the words barely registered in your mind, when the café doors opened and someone sat across from you. You glanced up, locking eyes with a pair of mischievous golden ones. “What’cha doin?” He smiled, leaning on the table. You put your book down, taking a deep breath. “I was reading.. but now I’m talking to you.” You scowled, taking a sip of your coffee.
“ Aw, don’t be so bitter! Or is it the side effects of that god awful thing you drink every day?” He asks, teasing you. You scoff, rolling your eyes. “Not everyone likes drinking sugar with a side of coffee.” You said matter-of-factly, setting the steaming cup down. He chuckled, resting his head in his palm. “Come on, grumpy. Kinda hoped my message sweetened your mood just a tiny bit.” He smiled, keeping his eyes on you.
“You’re being childish.” You state, sitting back and crossing your arms. “Why do you work here anyway? You have a hero-worthy quirk so why do this?” You ask curiously.
He thought for a bit, a little taken aback at your sudden questioning but he took that as a win. “Well, grumpy..” “Don’t call me that.” “..I was a hero two years ago but my wings got pretty damaged during a nasty attack which forced me out of that field.” He frowned, which made you soften your harsh gaze.
“I came here for a while to sulk and think about what to do with my life.. I mean, being the no. 2 hero and then getting shot down to a mere civilian kinda had me depressed for a while until miss Yoshida, that old lady, offered me a job here.” He smiled softly, looking back into the shop where the woman was serving customers. “Without her I’d probably still be haunting this place with my depressing presance everyday.. So I’m grateful to have her even tho she can be a bit harsh at times.”
You stayed quiet, what could you possibly say to that anyway? You felt bad, but in that moment you couldn’t bring yourself to offer him any comforting words.
Keigo suddenly stood up, almost knocking down his chair in the process. “Well! That’s my queue to get back to work!” He smiled, waving at you as he opened the door. “Next time you should tell me something about yourself, grumpy.” That was the last thing he said before he headed inside, leaving you to your own thoughts.
Over the next few months you’d come to the café before your lectures or during your free classes, ordering your usual and getting a free pick up line right to it. Sometimes he’d sit down with you, either talking your ear off or getting you to open up as well.
As much as you didn’t like him at first, he started to grow on you and you couldn’t imagine him out of your day to day life.
As you sat in the lecture hall, eyes locked on your coffee cup, you could’ve sworn your heart skipped beats every few seconds. ‘I wonder if he means any of these stupid words.’ You think to yourself, letting your thumb graze the black ink.
I can feel something brewing between the two of us. ;)
Your thumb lingered over the ink, tracing each letter until the words blurred. ‘Something brewing, huh?’ You swallowed hard, forcing yourself to look away before your brain spiraled into places you weren’t ready to admit existed. Not yet.
You shoved the empty cup into your bag so you wouldn’t keep rereading it like some hopeless idiot and went through your day pretending your brain wasn’t replaying the stupid wink he’d given you earlier.
You didn’t go back the next morning.
Not because you were avoiding him — you weren’t. Absolutely not.
You’re a customer, nothing more.
Your heart doesn’t get to act like this over a barista with wings and a stupid smile.
And so you made your own coffee at home. (It tasted like burnt mud and regret.)
For weeks you couldn’t focus, your grades poor which concerned most of your proffessors so you finally sat yourself down and tried to focus. But of course, by noon you’d spent hours staring at assignments without absorbing a single word.
Frustrated, you snapped your laptop shut, groaning. “Fine,” you muttered to the empty room. “I’ll go study somewhere else.” You packed your things into your messenger bag like an old routine; laptop, notebook, pens, your favorite book— and only when you zipped your bag did you realize what “somewhere else” meant.
Where your feet were already planning to take you.
You froze in your doorway, shaking your head in denial. “No,” you told yourself. “I’m not going for him. I’m going because the tables are big and the lighting is good and—” You groaned and headed out before your brain could finish the lie.
You got to the café quicker then usual, stepping up to the register just as Keigo had turned around.
His eyes widened a little the moment he saw you, but his demeanour brightened instantly like someone flipped a switch inside him. “Hey! Look who decided to show up.” He smirked, leaning on the counter, ready to type in your order. “The usual—?” “No,” you interrupted, face flushing at how awkward the silence was.
He blinked. “..No?” “No,” you repeated, crossing your arms. “I don’t feel like it today.” You mutter, playing with the rings on your fingers.
“Oh?” He tilted his head, feathers fluffing slightly. “Trying something new?”
“Yeah.. I guess it was about time I changed things up.” You shrug, which only made him more amused. Keigo leaned in closer, like you just told him the most fascinating secret in the world. “Well, color me intrigued. What’ll it be then?”
You scanned the menu for the first time in a while then ordered something you had never gotten before — something sweet, and crazy. Nothing like what you’d usually get.
Keigo raised both brows, almost as if he was waiting for you to say ‘sike’. “..Really?” he asked, voice low with surprise. “You’re serious?”
“Yes..” You said, feeling the judgment from miles away.
He laughed under his breath, pushing off the counter to start your drink. “Huh. Look at you turning a new page. Didn’t think I’d see the day.”His tone wasn’t mocking but definitely amused.
When he finished, he set the cup in front of you, smiling at the way you eyed the drink. “One sugar-high coffee for this bitter soul who shocked the entire café by not ordering her beloved Turkish coffee.” He grinned. “Seriously, I’m still recovering.”
You rolled your eyes but felt your lips twitch into a smile anyway. “Whatever bird brain, don’t you have orders to take?” I gesture towards the tables waiting to be served, chuckling at the way his grin fell into an annoyed scowl.
You sat near the back of the café, the warm hum of conversation filling the air while you eyed the unfamiliar drink in front of you.
Hesitantly, you took a sip of the mysteriois drink in front of you— but as the liquid touched your tastebuds, you immediately regretted every decision that had led you here.
It wasn’t exactly awful, it tasted fine — but it wasn’t you. It wasn’t strong or rich or bitter enough to slap your soul awake like your usual always did.
It was soft. Sweet. Wrong. Just not you.
“Okay,” a voice said directly beside you, “you hate it.” You jumped slightly. “What— how—” Keigo was standing at your table with a tray in hand, golden eyes narrowing at your barely-touched cup. “I knew it,” he sighed dramatically. “Your face is doing that thing.” He snorted, making you scowl. “What thing?” You ask, exasparated. “That thing where you scrunch your nose like the order the person in front of you put in personally offended you.” He took the drink right out of your hands. “Here. Let me save you.” Before you could protest, he slid a steaming cup onto the table — your usual.
He slides into the seat across from you, taking a sip of what you originally ordered before sticking out his tongue in disgust. “Eugh— okay, this definitely personally offended me too.” He stated, trying to get the taste of pure sugar off his tongue. You laugh at his antics, shaking your head. “You’re impossible Keigo.” You put a hand over your mouth, giggling quietly.
Keigo looked at you awe struck, resting his head in his palm as he admired the way your smile lines became more visible with the curve of your lips. “You should smile more often, it suits you, grumpy.” He mused, hearts practically forming in his eyes.
I scoff, smiling softly. “Well if I have a stupid bird like you making me laugh all the time, you might just see it through.” Keigo chuckled, leaning back in his seat, letting his wings spread out more. “It’s a deal.” He winked, grinning.
Keigo glanced at your now-empty cup, then at you, something soft lingering behind the gold in his eyes.
“You know,” he said lightly, “if I didn’t know any better, I’d think you actually enjoyed my company.” You snorted, tracing the usually ink stained cup. “Don’t push it.” Keigo smirked, his eyes narrowing slightly. “Oh I am pushing it.” He said in a low tone, sending over one of his feathers to graze down your cheek to your chin, making you look up at him. “Cut it out, birdy.” You swat the feather away, but he didn’t take it back, letting it fall into the palm of your hand.
The two of you went quiet, your leg bouncing under the table while Keigo simply stared at you, watching as you played with the red feather which made his heart swell with an unknown pride.
“Hey could you make me another cup?” You ask, breaking the silence and Keigo’s admiring time. He nodded, gesturing for you to follow and so you did.
He made the coffee like a bedtime routine, knowing it by heart by now since most of Japan never really drank this strong of a coffee, but at least it was special to him— you were special to the ‘retired’ hero.
He took a deep breath, his fingers writing something down before he could think it over, sliding the drink over. As you took one sip, you quickly gagged, putting it back down. But before you coule complain about the salty taste in your coffee, you noticed the little message the barista had left for you.
Your heart thumped against your ribs, pounding so hard you thought he could hear it.
When you looked up, Keigo was leaning forward slightly, wings stilled, waiting— genuinely waiting — for your answer.
“I..” You started, looking at his hopeful face. You observed the man you’ve know for a little over six months.. the man who flirted with you, bothered you, teased you, never failed to make you roll your eyes— but always made sure you smiled before walking away. “..yeah,” you whispered. “I think I would.”
His smiled in relief, running a hand through his blonde hair. “In that case..” he said, untangling his apron., “I get off in ten minutes.” He stepped around the counter, feathers ruffling with excitement he didn’t bother hiding.
“Stick around?” he asked, grabbing your hands with a sheepish smile. You nodded, smiling up at the love-sick man. “Good,” Keigo said with a soft, satisfied laugh, “because I’ve been waiting months to take you on a date, grumpy.” He said, giving your forehead a sweet kiss before walking behind the counter again, placing your real drink in front of you.
You scoffed and gave him the most unimpressed look you could muster.
“Could’ve just asked me like a normal person instead of offending the entire country of Turkey by putting salt in their coffee.”
Your tone was flat, deadly serious — but your mouth twitched.
Keigo immediately threw both hands up as if the police had entered the café.
“Oh no!” he gasped dramatically. “Arrest me. I’m a danger to international relations.” You snorted as he backed away toward the staff room, walking with an exaggerated limp like he’d been gravely wounded.
“Bird brain,” you muttered which made him pause at the doorway just long enough to shoot you a wink that went straight to your heartbeat.
You stepped outside to wait for him, cup warming your hands as the cool air brushed your skin. You looked down at the writing scrawled across it, eyes softening as your cheeks warmed ‘That sly bird..’ you thought, biting your lip to hide the smile forming.
For my grumpy, yet gorgeous date who I love a latte. <3
