an interesting linguistics find! so I'm reading this text from 1908 and it keeps referencing "hp" in the context of "not being at full hp" "applying your full hp to a task" etc
and I'm like....... okay that is a perfectly normal way to describe energy and reads totally clear to me, but I KNOW you don't mean hit points/health points which is the first place my brain goes, so what are YOU using hp to mean
and it's not explained in-text, which means it was common enough to not warrant explanation to the 1908 audience, so gotta look elsewhere
horsepower. turns out it's horsepower.
and I'm absolutely FASCINATED that a commonly used initialism from 1908 now stands for something different AND YET the contextual meaning is still the same to a 21st-century reader
I could hand this guy my nintendo switch and he'd be like, ah yes I understand, this ''''pokemon'''' loses horsepower throughout the fight
language is amazing

Heartwarming story: Little girl doesn’t have to do anything to fund her dad’s surgery because his expenses are covered by his country’s universal healthcare.
Human determination: Man bikes 18 miles to work every morning because he wants to and not because he can’t afford a car and would be fired if he’s late.
Spirit of Brotherhood: Neighbors host housewarming party for elderly resident who doesn’t need help in paying rent because his pension is more than enough.
SO INSPIRING: Local middle school students bake dozens of cupcakes because their home economics class is doing a baking unit. Their school is fully funded with everything they need.
This feels like calibrating my normal detector

today im thinking about the huge buff bread guy from kikis delivery service. highly underrated guy
Genuinely just a good man. Wife adopts teenage witch that needs a place to stay in the city? Sure. Even though you got a kid on the way? That’s fine. Cat too? Love cats.
My favorite moment with him is when he goes to get some prepped baking sheets and he does this fancy twirl with them in front of Jiji. Like, there’s no other people in the room, he does this to impress a cat.
I don’t think he ever says more than a whole word the entire movie, and I still love him more than most Disney princes based on this one moment alone.
i dont usually actually associate myself with redstone dust but im not gonna lie. every time i mine redstone in minecraft i do briefly go "woah thats me" . ive lost. im redstone. i have to accept it.
Hey. Your brain needs to de-frag. Literally it needs you to sit there and space out.
If you want your memory or executive function to improve, stare out a window at the skyline or sidewalk or trees or birds on the electrical wires for like 20+ minutes per day. (With no other stimulation like a podcast or TV if you can manage but hey baby steps innit). If you're fortunate enough to have safe outside with any bits of nature, go stare closely at a 1 meter square of grass and trip out on the bugs and shapes of grasses and stuff.
Literally this will make you smarter. Our brains HAVE TO HAVE this zone out time to do important stuff behind the scenes. This does not happen during sleep, it's something else.
That weird pressurized feeling you get sometimes might be your brain on no defrag.
Give your brain a Daily Dose Of De-Frag.
Oh, you think you're safe now?
Nothing can deliver you from these paws!

i know that "vfd bad" is very much the "jedis bad" of the snicketverse fandom in that it's a surface level take that waters down nuance, but i also feel compelled to mention how horrifying it is that the poem vfd kids were made to memorize includes the words "so don't scream when we take you", and the general idea that no matter how much abuse or neglect or endangerment they all suffered, it's just what they signed up for by virtue of being "volunteers". it's the same mindset we see ish utilize against the villagers; constantly reminding them that they are choosing to be here, even though he's very much influencing that decision. look at the sugar bowl generation: orphans, outcasts, lost children. anyone who may, for one reason or another, have at some point had a reason to "drive away in secret", unaware that in doing so, they were apparently signing up to be volunteers.
i also feel like the implications that vfd was never as forgiving as they portrayed themselves as is heavy, especially with count olaf. his and jacques' confrontation in tvv seems confusing; jacques is offering him, essentially, a get out of jail free card. telling him that he can rejoin vfd, with no consequences. that no one will hold him accountable for the several murders and arsons he's committed. even though this seems like an absurdly favourable deal, olaf still refuses. now, this could of course be chalked up to olaf's own stubbornness; "i'm sorry" will never be enough to quell his thirst for revenge against the baudelaires, "we won't throw the book at you" will never account for his bitterness, resentment, hatred, or the sheer joy he takes in taking all of that out on other people. but the fact that he didn't even consider jacques' proposal, even though the baudelaires managed to convince him to do something good by literally just telling him he has the capacity to (twice!), seems...suspicious. almost like he doesn't believe jacques. almost like he knows jacques is lying, either willfully or unknowingly. because jacques snicket may be a forgiving person, but vfd is not a forgiving organization. olaf has a sort of sunk cost fallacy relationship with his own villainy; he believes he has simply gone too far, devoted too much of his life to this to go back now. if he were to suspect that vfd feels the same way, that they'd hold his actions against him in more ways than just a slap on the wrists and a "do better next time", well...of course he wouldn't willingly turn himself in.
Wow, @radioactive-yuri, I've never looked at it that way before! And I certainly never noticed your exquisite point about Olaf trusting the Baudelaires (his 'archnemeses') more than Jacques.
This post really highlights, in a nutshell, the genius of Daniel Handler (Lemony Snicket): characters start out with Very Flat Dimensionality (1-D). Then other dimensions are added — but unlike most stories, Handler doesn't say, "Hey, look! Watch me add this dimension to this character!" Rather he adds the dimension and waits for us to find it ourselves.
Exceptional, @radioactive-yuri,

Also, "stay home if you don't want to be murdered by the government" is not something said by people who value freedom.
In retrospect, one thing I kinda like in ATLA is how Zuko never tells the gaang how he got his scar.
It would have been cool to see their reactions to Zuko's story and see how their perspective on Zuko changed. And I have no doubt that he tells them about it at some point. But this way, it doesn't come off as emotional blackmail, with him trying to paint his actions as 'Yes, I hunted you across the world, but I actually had a really good reason."
If he did, he might have had a better chance of joining the Gaang, but he doesn't. In traditional Zuko fashion, he takes the most challenging route possible.
Zuko takes full accountability for his actions, even though they came from a place where he felt he had no choice. Because at the end of the day, he realized that even though his father put him on his avatar's path, he was the one who zealously attacked them at every opportunity. He isn't letting himself off the hook for anything.
#zuko is so funny to me because at multiple points throughout the show if he had any manipulative bone in his damn body #he wouldve gotten somewhere #blue spirit? why are you throwing fire. the avatar is talking with you. LIE. #its so fucking funny bc the gaang is like 'zukos EVIL he is PLAYING you' guys zuko doesnt know how to do that. #full honest truth confessing insane shit in front of them. he didnt even gaf about being friends or being FORGIVEN it was abt the goal #'i need the avatar to take me into their group so i may aid in however possible to stop my father' that was the goal. truly was like #'take me as a prisoner if this is the way i can help' HES CRAZY (@ponytailzuko)
