A little bit of magic, a little bit of logic (and a whole lot of coincidence) chapter 14
He can’t trust Jason.
Nor can he trust Reyna who’s top priority has always been towards Camp Jupiter.
Dakota and Gwen are probably out the window too. They respect Jason far more than they do him.
He probably can’t trust Percy either or Nico. Whatever happened on their world-saving quest, it made them the bestest of friends with Jason. They will definitely rat him out to Jason if he confides in them his feelings.
So if he can’t trust any of them, who can he trust?
“Hey, you okay?”
Connor forces himself to nod, forces himself to retighten his grip on his fork. He can’t bring himself to glance at Jason nor bring himself to stab into the salad he’d asked for. He sits next to Jason on Zeus’s table.
Why Zeus’s and not Hermes’s? He’s not sure. Jason wouldn’t say. But it’s probably just another ploy to keep the camp-wide secret from him.
Connor glances at Hermes’s table. Tightly packed, almost overflowing, but far more lively than this table. He can’t count all of them without losing track but definitely more than 20. Some are older, bordering 18 or 19 while some are as young as 7. They’re loud, boisterous, yelling something about a stolen left sneaker and a pack of pokemon cards. One of the older boys, tall and lanky with around 8 beads on his necklace, is trying to maintain the peace somewhat. Chris is his name, Connor thinks. The counselor? Has to be. That guy has the most beads.
He wishes he was over there. Not because he wants to connect with his siblings or anything (though that would be nice) but so he wouldn’t be stared down like he is here. Jason isn’t exactly being subtle with the furtive glances in between bites of clam chowder.

1000 ways to tell the stoll brothers apart and I can name you one
Sherman
Sherman is going to be brutally honest. If Travis and Connor really want people to stop mistaking them for the other, then one of them should dye their hair or cut it shorter or get a big, obvious tattoo.
What?
He’s right, isn’t he?
It’s not like they have a mom or a dad who will object considering they’re yearrounders.
“Just because they’re yearrounders, it doesn’t mean they have a bad relationship with their mortal parents,” Malcolm Pace, another new friend, comments as he does volleyball practice drills, setting to the flat side of the climbing wall and taking a half step back every few seconds. Sherman watches Malcolm do his drills on the floor, back against the wall, chin resting on his hand.
“So they don’t have a bad relationship with their mom?” Sherman chirps.
The small frown and the lack of answer on Malcolm’s part tells him exactly what he needs to know.
They don’t have a good relationship with their mom so case in point. Travis or Connor should dye their hair. He thinks one of them would look good as a blond. Or they should bleach it entirely. Maybe one can be blond and the other can be ginger.

Sherman (12) - Travis (14) - Connor (13)
Sherman doesn’t really know how to tell Travis and Connor apart and he’s made peace with never figuring it out. Sure, he’s only been here for a couple days. He probably needs to give it more time but honestly, from the bottom of his heart, truly and absolutely, he’s certain he’ll never be able to tell Travis and Connor apart.
Some girl from the Athena cabin told him it’s like night and day if he really pays attention. Percy told him one’s taller. Malcolm also says it’s super obvious to him if he looks really, really closely. Miranda can also do it fairly easily after spending a minute or two talking with one.
Only Michael is in the same boat as him and that’s just barely.
“Travis likes strawberries,” Michael Yew, his new friend, says as he nocks an arrow back and lets it fly. It impressively lands square in the bullseye along with about a dozen others. “Like, an excessive amount. An unhealthy amount. He burns strawberries for his dad. Connor burns M&Ms.”
“So you’re telling me if you don’t see them burning their offerings, you can’t tell them apart?” Sherman asks, kicking his feet leisurely on the bench he’s sitting on.
“Yeah, that’s right.”
“You’re just as bad as me.”

“You’re just as bad as me.”
Michael stares at his handiwork with the dozen bulls eye arrows, absentmindedly saying, “I guess so, though I don’t need to tell them apart anymore. They’re not my counselors anymore. You, on the other hand though, are screwed.” Glancing over his shoulder, Michael gives him a slight smirk like his pain is his enjoyment. “You haven’t forgotten what Miranda said, right? We’re in their bad books. Better watch out, Shermie, and not cause any more trouble.”
Michael holds the bow out to him. “Your turn now. Bet you can’t do better than me.”
“I can’t believe you’re not going to try and tell them apart. You know, a decent human being would try. It’s called respecting Travis and Connor as individuals,” Sherman says, picking the bow from Michael’s waiting hands and getting into position at the next target.
All he gets is Michael rolling his eyes. “Please. You’re not trying very hard either.”
This friendship he has with Michael was a surprise. But not unwelcomed. Michael is cool and fun to talk to. Doesn’t have that air of responsibility Travis and Connor are forcing. Doesn’t overexplain like Malcolm although Malcolm is pretty cool. Doesn’t have Miranda’s sly, sweet smiles that’s always hiding something beneath.
Michael is straightforward and simple and honest.
So it’s what emboldened Sherman to ask the question that’s been burning in the back of his mind ever since his first day here. “Who do you think this Luke person is? Why do you think he’s gone now?”
The words come out a little bit above a whisper. They’re not really allowed to be talking about Luke, apparently. But that just makes Sherman all the more curious.
Michael hums, deep in thought, head tilting back to look at the cloudless sky. Sherman has always thought New York to be cold and rainy and snowy and smoggy, but this camp here is the entire opposite. It could even give San Francisco a run for its money with its sunny weather. Though this is all because of the magical border so who knows.
“Lee doesn’t like talking about him.” Michael says after a while, which go figures. A lot of people here don’t like talking about this Luke person. “But I get the feeling he was a friend of Lee’s. I heard there’s going to be a war. That there is a war going on right now. And that it’s because of Luke. Lee and the other counselors are doing some behind the scene work so us campers and newcomers can enjoy camp.”
“A war, huh?”
Sherman looks outwards at a group of campers frolicking the fields, another group playing volleyball, another climbing the lava wall, basically just having the time of their life. Even with the new camp director, it doesn’t appear like this summer camp is stopping their summer activities to go full time war mode if only the counselors are taking action. Maybe it isn’t that serious. Then again… with that bull attack from earlier… Sherman honestly doesn't know what this camp is thinking. If it was him, if he wants to minimize the death counts, he would stop all extracurriculars and focus entirely on getting everybody up to par with that Percy guy and Clarisse girl — or somewhere within that skill range. Look at Michael here, he could only shoot a bow. But what good is a bow if the enemy is breathing down his neck?
So it’s either that or send everybody that has a home back for the summer.
“Sure doesn’t feel like it,” Sherman says clearly as he lets the arrow fly. It’s not a bullseye, just adjacent, but it’s good enough. It’ll kill the enemy and that’s what matters.

Original Katie chapter 15, 10/21/2018
Katie — Bugs
Katie (13) - Travis (13) - Connor (12)
February 2007
With great power comes great responsibility…
Great powers such as being a walking, breathing, free-producing fertilizer and great responsibilities such as not scaring her classmates with said powers or disrupting class with said powers or trashing her school with said power.
Katie fails all three in one day. Altogether. In one spectacular kabam.
She always thought she had great control over her powers. Sure, she can't really stop her vegetable garden from growing a new batch a day after she picked them clean and sure she can’t really stop the little pine saplings that grew at her feet when she’s just a tad upset. And sure , when she wakes up in the morning, her room is covered ceiling to floor with a not so thin layer of ivy.
But it never went any further than that and it never bothered anyone. Their neighbors love them for all the free produce and Miranda, her best friend who is just as weird as her, is grateful for all the trees, using her powers to craft and mold it into whatever she wants it to be.
And dad never had the ‘talk’ with her like Miranda’s stepmom does.
Things were alright the way they were.
Then she had to go and uproot her entire middle school by its foundation. She’s not going to get into the details of it, but a bird had spooked her. It got right up to her face, wings slapping her cheeks, and well… she shrieked and batted it away. Next thing she knew oak trees were growing in every single classroom, breaking straight through the ceiling and disfiguring the floor, doors, and walls.
That warrants an action and that action comes in the form of multicolor pamphlets of smiley kids in bright orange shirts posing underneath a wooden sign that says, “Camp Half Blood.” Dad talks to a ‘Mr. Chiron’ about fees and safety and commodities over the phone and before she knows it, she’s packing a suitcase and getting into the car.
Dad talks animatedly about the camp, about how she was going to love it there and about the activities she can do and the people she’ll meet and how if she loves it enough, she can go back for the summer.
She tries to appear enthusiastic, nodding along and commenting every once and awhile but she can’t bring herself to speak and lie. She’s been trying for 13 long years to get her powers under control. What can this camp do? Worse yet, what if this is an excuse and Dad is getting rid of her?! What if she never gets her powers in control and she stays at this camp forever and ever?!
It’s only until they drive towards the off-ramp leading to the airport that Katie asks her first question. “Where is the camp?”
Dad chuckles, a hand going to scratch the back of his neck. “You know, it’s, ah, in the states. Somewhere on the east coast. New York to be exact.”
“New York?!” Katie yells, jumping in her seat. “Why is it in New York?!”
The car swerves sharply to the left and she’s thrown to the right. Behind them, horns blare and tires shriek.
From the back window, she could see a palm tree growing in the middle of the road, breaking through the asphalt. Cars behind them screech to a halt in the face of her impromptu creation.
A heavy silence falls on the car as she sinks into her seat.
“I’m sorry,” she mumbles, twisting her hands in her lap.
“It’s fine, Katie.” But she couldn’t miss the tremble in Dad’s hands and the exhale he’s trying to hide under his breath. With forced pep in his voice, Dad says, “Hey, chin up. This is why you’re going to the camp, yeah? There’ll be someone waiting for us when we get to New York and while I’m talking to Chiron, you can make friends with the kid Chiron will bring along!”
Katie nods dejectedly.
Except it isn’t just one kid, but two. And those two boys are familiar. Very, very familiar. It clicks for them too. Before she can even process why they’re placing a finger on their lip or slashing their throats with a thumb or even mouthing ‘no, no, no, no, no ,’ she points at them and says, “I know you two. You guys were in Sierra’s stall last month.”
The wheelchaired man’s eyebrow rises. The wheels creak as the man rolls back a bit to look over his shoulder.
“Oh?”
Which, she guesses, all lead them to now.
To this situation. To this dilemma.
See, the two boys, Travis and Connor, are sons of Hermes.
Sons of the God of Tricksters.
And Katie has a very weak heart with a weaker sense of humor that borders on nagging mother according to Miranda. So it doesn’t really surprise her when she opens that door to Cabin 11 and something pops right by her ear that she responds by shrieking and swinging her suitcase in a wide arc. Travis and Connor step back to avoid it, but the damage has already been done.
The ground starts to rumble. The walls start to wobble. Everything is vibrating. And as she clings to the door frame, eyes shut tight, she could hear a horrible, horrible creaking — of wood splintering, of roof panels splitting, of drywall cracking.
The shaking eventually stops and when she opens her eyes, there stands a fully grown Giant Redwood in the center of the cabin, piercing through the wooden boards and metal bunk beds alike.
By her feet lies the unsuspecting confetti popper with its green and red and yellow contents scatter all over the floor. Further away, she sees Travis and Connor on the floor but otherwise fine, thankfully, and staring at the tree in awe.
What a fantastic start to her first day.
They started off on the wrong foot. With her accidentally ratting them out to the director about their unapproved outing. And now with her destroying their beloved cabin (her cabin too for now until her mom or dad or whoever decides to claim her). It’s no wonder why Travis and Connor are relentlessly pranking her left and right.
The first prank, the second prank, even the third prank, Katie would say it’s deserved. But the fourth? The fifth? The tenth and twentieth? Undeserved. Unwarranted. They’re horrible, horrible people, Travis and Connor. The other campers are telling her otherwise, but they’re not living with them, are they?
Slugs in her socks. Flour in the toothpaste. Water balloons in her pillow. They are unceasing. They are cruel. They are unbearable and utterly unreasonable. They are assholes to be frank and Katie hates them. She hates them with every fiber of her being and she wants them to break a leg the next time they come across a monster.
Okay, maybe she’s being a bit much with her words, but she can’t stand them. She tolerates them and can hold a conversation if need be, but she much rather hangs out with Silena and Will and the satyrs and the dryads first before spending time with Travis and Connor. She sees them plenty when it’s just the three of them the minutes before lights out and the minutes after waking up and before breakfast.
Besides the satyrs and the dryads, they are the ones most connected with nature. Though they can’t help her with her powers, their presence and songs can curb the wild and uncontrolled growth somewhat. So that’s where she mostly spent her time. At the strawberry fields with the satyrs and in the forest with the dryads where not a single one of them will prank her and scare/annoy her soul out of her body. Which is very, very nice.
It allows her to concentrate in peace. And Katie needs all the peace she can get while she trains.
Katie crouches beside the strawberry plants, the leaves shifting in the windless air and reaching for her. Beside her, Ibara a satyr nods in encouragement and holds his pan pipes close in case he needs to interfere.
She takes a deep breath and relaxes her shoulders. Her hand rests palm down on the cool dirt. For a moment, the strawberry fields quiver in a wave like they’re about to explode in a growing frenzy, but they still when Katie wills them to stop. Don’t grow. Don’t grow. Don’t grow. Please listen to me. I’m begging you. She chants in her head as she lifts her palm, fingers still touching the earthy soil. The field quivers again, but they don’t grow and Katie removes her fingers slowly. She counts the second.
1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. 9—
A ladybug flies by and lands on top of a leaf. She could feel her control slipping through her fingertips. Because of one teeny tiny ladybug. Unbelievable. The leaves quiver again. White flowers begin blooming. Unripe strawberries are appearing. The already ripe strawberries are decaying and molding away. There’s a musty and stale smell filling the air.
Ibara looks at her in concern, pan pipes rising to his lips but he’s not playing it. Why? Because he believes she can still get this under control before the entire field is ruined? That’s stupid but Ibara believes in her so she has to try.
Hold it. Don’t lose it yet. Please obey me . Take a breath. Try again. You can do it, Katie.
They’re still growing to her dismay, but slower though. Maybe if she focus more then—
“Katie!”
It slips from her hands entirely and the fields erupt in a growing frenzy. Ibara is on it right away, playing a song on his pipes. A couple other satyrs jump into the song too.
“Katie! I have this really cool trick to show you!”
She hears footsteps running towards her. She doesn’t need to turn around to know it’s one of them. But she turns anyway, sighing as she rests a hand on her hip. “If it’s another prank, Travis, I swear I’ll—”
‘Travis’ rolls his eyes. “I’m Connor. And no, Ms. No-Fun-Allowed. It’s not a prank. It’s a magic trick. Here. Pick a card. Any ca— Hey! Where are you going?”
She walks away mid-sentence, away from the fields, after giving an apologetic nod to the satyrs. Her being near it will just give the satyrs more work to do. She mindlessly flexes her hand and says over her shoulder, “I have to talk to Chiron. Next time.”
Sometimes she tries when it’s night.
Maybe it’ll be easier. Maybe it’s just the sun making it difficult.
They’re quiet as they should be, but when she draws near they wake up and the leaves angles to her. She sinks to her knees and holds out a hand. Stop. They slow, but didn’t stop. Stop. they’re not stopping. Why won’t they stop? Katie rubs a hand into her eyes. No, no, crying will just make it worse. She needs to keep it together.
She takes another deep breath and exhale. Then another deep breath, exhale, inhale, ex—
“S-S-See, Connor? There’s a ghost over there. I told you there’s a ghost haunting the strawberry fields, but nooo, ‘ ghosts don’t exist, ghosts are fairy tales.’”
“Yeah, yeah, yeah I see it! Stop shaking my shoulder! Uh, lets go get Lee. He’ll probably know what to — wait… Katie? Isn’t that Katie?”
And they yell her name, disrupting the silence and her focus. The strawberries grows and grows until they’re red and ripe and probably delicious.
She grits her teeth and stands, twin footfalls coming to her.
“You can’t just wander around by yourself at night, Katie! There’s harpies to worry about. They’ll give us a citation if we don’t behave and we already got too many this month because somebody has to keep breaking into Apollo’s and Hephaestus’ cabins! ”
“Hey. Lee got it coming. He shouldn’t have made fun of us. I needed tools and Beckendorf is and I quote ‘staying in his lane this time,’ and his tools aren’t exactly free to the public”
“You gotta try harder to not get caught.”
“Have you ever got past Beckendorf’s alarms?”
She tunes them out easily enough. There’s just something about them that’s easy to ignore. Her head falls back onto the chair and she flexes her right hand. It’s not getting better. Two weeks have passed and it’s not getting better. Should it be taking this long? Is she doing something wrong? The wedding is in two months. If she doesn’t get under control by then…
“Hey, Kitkat Katie.”
“Don’t call me that,” she says without thought, lowering her head to stare at the brothers. They’re looking at her weird, with their mouth set in a small frown and eyes narrow just a bit.
“Is something wrong?” one asks.
“Nothing’s wrong.” But everything is wrong. And right behind them, to her horror, the wilting flowers quiver and pull upright. Bright, healthy, indistinguishable from their wilted state a mere seconds ago.
And sometimes she gives up for a few hours and dig into her blankets on the top bunk bed in Cabin 11.
She’s only a few feets from where she grew her first tree on camp. Looking down she could see the finished, polished flooring, a contrast to the antiquity of the rest of the cabin. It’s hard to believe it was ever damaged.
The cabin was fixed in just three, incredible days. She didn’t think it was possible but the man who fixed it only smiled and waved his hand flippantly. “Don’t sweat it. It happens all the time with newcomers. This cabin is always getting renovated in weird places,” he said, pointing at the ceiling and the old roof supporters but new shills, the old restroom tiles but new counters, the stained window drapes but new window panes.
It happens all the time.
Yet the only beds being occupied are hers and Travis’s and Connor’s.
Which means the others who were here before already left.
Which means the others who were uncontrollable like her had already left.
She pulls the covers over her head, fully intending on sleeping the afternoon away but then, like fate itself wanted her to suffer, the door flies open and two voices tumble into the cabin, awfully loud and awfully grating.
“I’m never playing kickball with Clarisse again. I think I bruised my ribs when I caught her ball.”
“It’s like a cannon. Why can’t she take it easy on us? Hey, Katie! Are you here? We’re playing volleyball soon and need another player.”
She keeps quiet, listening to them tramp around the cabin. They come closer and closer, stopping at the ladder to her bunk. A second passes before, “We know you’re up there.”
She didn’t say anything. Maybe they’re lying. Maybe they’re —
“The tulips are growing, so we know you’re up there. Come on. Volleyball is waiting for us.”
Reluctantly, Katie rises and peeks down. One of them is holding a pot and true to their words, the tulips are growing, shifting through the life cycle faster than it should be. Katie rolls back onto her bed.
“I don’t want to.”
“Come on , Katie. We left you alone for three weeks now, but you have to participate in some camp activities.”
“You didn’t leave me alone for —”
“Pranks don’t count. They’re not camp stuff.”
“Everybody is waiting. Getting some exercise is good.”
She draws her blankets under her chin and curls in. “No.”
“Playing volleyball will help you stay alert! You need to be alert once you leave camp.”
Once you leave camp … She curls in farther and shuts her eyes. “No.”
“Don’t be such a debbie-downer. And just come play. Just one game.”
“I said no! ”
And she feels something surge through her whole body, a jolt of electricity. The ground rumbles, shakes and something is creaking. Something is tearing. Before she could even throw the covers off, she hears screaming.
She bolts straight up and scoots towards the ladder, peeking down from the side and paling at what she sees. Vines, with stems as wide as her wrists, are wrapped around the Travis’ and Connor’s ankles. And by the time she climb down the ladder, the tendrils are snaked around their hips and reaching higher still. She could see them tightening and tightening and tightening. If they reach the neck… then… they could… they could…
Katie swallows and walks up to them, but the vines move faster up and she backs away. Travis, Connor, she still can’t tell them apart but one of them notices and tries to back away too, except his feet is planted and it did nothing but draws panic up in him and in her.
The other raises his head to her and waves. He waves like he’s not minutes away from being strangled by a plant. “Katie. Hey, look, sorry for not taking no for an answer. My bad. Definitely won’t happen again until I get some pruners on me. Can you call these off us?”
Call them off? Call them off? When she can’t even control them in the first place? When her power never directly attacked people before? Call them off?
She tries to say as much, but everything comes out jumbled and she only sees the vines that continue to climb and climb and climb.
“Katie,” the one who tried to back away first said, a wavering smile on his face. “It’s going to be alright. Calm down first. You panicking just makes it grow faster. Breathe, count to ten, breathe again then try.”
He tries to hide it, tries to mask that growing hysteria in his voice and panic in his eyes, tries to remain calm for her sake, but it just made her panic all the more. She could see it. It’s too tight. The tendrils are still snaking up, curling around thighs and waists and arms. If they get to the neck and squeeze there.
No, no, no, no no no nononononono
“Katie, I don’t want to put pressure on you, but me and Connor are gonna die if you don’t call them off,” the second chuckles, still trying and still failing to rip the vines off.
“I— I— I’m trying. It’s not working. I’m sorry. I—”
“Don’t cry. Oh gods, please don’t cry. I got this.” And Connor brandishes a pocket knife. She didn’t even notice he was shifting around in his pocket in the midst of her panicking.
The pocket knife is small and when Connor somehow unhooked the blade, Katie could see its made of gold and is shining. But it’s small and the vines are thicker than her wrists. What could it possibly—
Connor stabs it into Travis and Katie screams.
He pushes down and she turns away, bile rising at the thought of seeing blood and muscles and bone.
But Travis wasn’t screaming in pain or anything and when Katie peeks behind her hands, Travis is actually snickering.Snickering. “Pffft, did you see that Connor?”
There’s no blood like she expected. No muscles. No bone. Only a trail of cut vines.
“What— how— I—”
“She actually thought you stabbed me. Haha. You watch too many horror movies,” Travis says, taking the knife from Connor’s hand and cutting through his bindings, slicing through the vines like they’re butter. In mere seconds, they were free. But new vines wrap themselves around their ankles. Travis stomps his feet, motioning with his head to her ladder. Connor seems to get what he’s saying and he drags her by the arm to her bed, following up last after them.
The vines don’t follow them up, but Katie watches them crawl through the rest of the floors, through the walls, to the ceiling, threading through boards and winding around nightstands.
Beside her, there’s a cough.
She didn’t dare look at them, couldn’t even find the words to say. Sorry isn’t enough. I don’t have control isn’t enough. I didn’t mean to isn’t enough. Her eyes burn and she shoves the heel of her hand against them. Crying now will make everything worse, but her eyes didn’t seem to want to listen like her stupid powers and she could feel a tear snakes down her cheek.
Travis claps his hands. “Well, that was a wonderful bonding moment. How about we bond some more through volleyball?”
“Unless you have some personal grudge against volleyball,” Connor adds, “Then we can play poker. ”
There’s a lump in her throat. Why do they sound so calm?
“Katie?”
There’s no fear in their voice. They’re not scared. Why? Why ?
“Say something. Are you hurt?”
Her breath hitches and again, the walls start to rumble.
“Oh my shit, she’s crying. Travis, what do we do?”
“I-I don’t know! What do we do? Someone call Lee or Chiron! Wait, Connor, you have drachmas on you, right? Call Annabeth. Where is she staying again? New York? Connecticut? Europe? AHHHH, why didn’t she tell us before she ditched us?”
She buries her head into her knees.
Why aren’t you mad?
Why don’t you hate me?
In the end, someone came to investigate the rumblings and found the cabin swathed from top to bottom in vines. Chiron told them it might take a while to get them free and to ‘sit tight.’ Outside, someone is wowing, saying they never saw a child of Demeter do something like this.
… whatever Demeter means.
The three of them sit in the middle of the bed, one has his leg dangling off the side and the other sits crossed legged while she has her legs drawn up to her chest. They’re playing a card game. Egyptian something. They asked if she wanted to play but she shook her head.
She was never that great at card game anyway and once the game started, it looks like they’re going way too fast for her to win anyway. She hugs her knees closer to her.
The third game in, they finally talk.
“So.” A card is laid down. “Do you want to tell us what’s been bothering you?”
Another card is flip, followed by another flip and another flip. Slap. “Unless you don’t want to tell us. That’s totally fine too.”
Flip. Flip. Slap. “It’s… my dad.” Flip. “He’s getting remarried.” Flip. Flip. Flip. Slap. “The wedding is in two months.”
The flipping stops as they share a look. A conversation passes between them that she didn’t understand. “Do you not like who your dad is marrying or—”
“No, I like them,” she murmurs, tracing circles on the bedspread with a listless finger, “But I can’t attend unless I have my powers under control.”
“Because you’ll cry?” The one sitting crossed-legged hisses quietly, Travis!
But she nods miserably. “Because I’ll cry.” And probably make the wedding into something from a horror movie.
Connor tilts his head to the side and edges closer to her. “Have you told Chiron?”
“Yeah, but every suggestion he gives doesn’t work.” Or maybe it’s just me. Maybe I’m the problem.
Travis hums and taps his chin. “We know someone who sorta has the same power as you. She’s not as dangerous because all she can make are these flimsy pieces of ivy, but hers is just as annoying as yours. Beckendorf always needed to come by and help snip them off. Maybe she can help. But, ah, she’s attending school in Maine. I’m not sure if she’s willing to come down here.”
Connor yawns and falls onto his back. “I heard she hates her middle school. She’ll probably say, say, say…”
Katie raises her head to look questionably at Connor, Travis doing the same. He’s rigid, eyes squinting and nose wrinkling. “Hey, Katie,” he starts slowly, quietly. “Those vines you grew, do they attract bugs?”
And she swallows hard as she reluctantly says, “They attract beetles, but as long as we get rid of the vines fast enough then—”
“Holy f—” “Swear Jar.”
In a burst of speed that Katie didn’t know humans were capable of, Connor launches himself to the wall, banging them like a demon. “HEY, WHO'S OUT THERE? LEE? CHIRON? BECKENDORF? PLEASE, CUT FASTER. CUT FASTER!”
Katie closes her eyes as Travis cackles, wishing more than ever that she had the power to retract too.
“AGH. IT’S EVERYWHERE. OH, GODS. ITS UNSALVAGEABLE. GIVE ME THE GASOLINE. I’M BURNING OUR CABIN DOWN.”
“Connor, you’re overreacting. Oh! Is that a bug I see on your arm?”
Connor’s wails could rival a volcano eruption. Travis’s laughs nearly challenging that. Outside, someone asks if they’re alright.
“Just kidding.”
Katie stares blankly as Connor tackles Travis, both of them crashing to the ground. Through the screaming, the laughing, the “you’re dead to me, you’re dead to me, Travis,” the “wait, wait, wait, Connor! The vines! The vines are still growing! We’re going to be strangled!” and the “Connor, please don’t commit murder,” there’s a drumming in her head. Beneath her fingertips, she could feel her power boiling, itching to get out.
Turns out the girl was more than happy to come to help her. In fact, the very next morning when Katie was brushing her teeth, a body tackles her from behind. Full on tackle as in hands are wrapping around her waist and she’s being lifted off the floor. Katie screams and beats her fist on the intruder’s back. She’s drop back onto the floor, stumbling back until her back hits the wall. There’s the familiar sound of creaking.
Within moments, her attacker’s arms are wrap taut to their body, a girl no older than her with short, black hair and a pair of green eyes that flashes with something dangerous.
“W-W-Who are you?” Katie stammers, clutching her chest.
Outside, someone groans. “Not again. Hurry, someone get pruners! And keep Connor away from his cabin!”
The girl smiles and struggles for a bit, awe on her face. “Wow, they weren’t lying. You’re really powerful. They’re not giving. Hey, Katie, would you mind letting me go now?”
“I…” Little ivies crawl up from the walls to the girl. “I don’t know how,” Katie mutters. There are two beads hanging from her neck. A camper then…
The girl laughs and struggles some more. “Okay, we’ll start there. My name is Veronica and I am going to be your mentor. Please take a while to learn so I don’t have to go back to school ya?”
Veronica’s lessons aren’t really so much about control but draining her power reservoirs to a point she’s able to turn on and off the growing. Then supposedly she works her control up from there. It sounds dubious, but it works. It really, really work and she never felt such control. Except, the lessons are… kind of exhausting. Exhausting to the point where after she’s done practicing, the most she can do is drag herself back to the cabins and to her bed. Then her power reservoir will recharge back up to full capacity and she has to release it all again.
The forest is kind of becoming the Amazon jungles…
Veronica tells her this method is infallible. That eventually she will get a hold of her power and can live like any other demigods (“And you’ll be able to kick anybody butts too.” Veronica adds with stars in her eyes).
Katie thinks she would like it a lot more if it didn’t make her muscles ache everywhere.
Connor reminds her it’s for her fathers. Katie wishes that reminder gives her the strength Connor seems to think it does.
Travis reminds her that if she doesn’t get better control, he’ll prank her.
It isn’t a great motivator until Travis dyes her hair green and snaps a picture to email back to her family.
Now it’s a great motivator and Katie has every intention of getting back on the stupid Stolls.
Lol I found a draft from 12/4/2024.
I wondered why I stopped writing. I could work with this.
I was clearing out the drafts and I can't believe 4 to 5 months per chapter was something I used to do 😭...
Seems like a fever dream
Original luke chapter before 2019 edit:
Luke — Eyes
Luke (14) Annabeth (7) Travis (7) Connor (6)
December
Luke knows better than anyone, knows more than anymore, the hardships and the unfairness of the streets. Society is against them, nature is out to kill them, and nobody can be trusted.
Luke understands that life so well. After all, that part of his life is still fresh in his mind. Just a few months ago, he was them. He was on the streets, scavenging however he can to stay alive.
That when he saw the lone boy performing mediocre magic tricks on New York City's busy streets, drawing a small crowd that cooed at his attempts, he stopped to stare for a moment. Another small kid weaves among the enthralled crowds, possibly to get a better view up close. Then the kid stopped behind the adults.
Luke's eyes narrow.
A hand pulls at his sleeve and he jumps. Luke looks down to see sharp, gray eyes staring up at him, the recipient with a small pout.
"Come on, Luke. We're going to be late," Annabeth says, drawing her scarf closer around her neck. She's shivering and Luke thoughtlessly pulls his beanie off and tuck it on Annabeth's head.
He nods and takes her hand, leading them towards the Empire State Building. But for whatever reason, he decides to look back one more time. The magician did a trick and the crowd awed in response. A total bum considering how awful the kid really is. Luke yawns and lets his eyes drift away but something caught his eye. The small kid who moved behind the adults stands on his tippy toes, obviously trying to see the show. But his hands weren't at his side. Instead, they're dipped into bags and in one swift motion, the kid pulled out wallets, receipts, accessories while zipping the bag shut in one go.
Luke stops.
"Actually, Annabeth, can you go on? I have something to do first."
"Chiron won't be happy," warned Annabeth.
"Cover for me, please?" Luke asked with a half smile, already backing towards the show, "Tell him I may find one."
He didn't wait for an answer and heads for the small crowd around the magic show.
The kid magician smiles a big, toothy smile at Luke and waves. Luke waves back but he stands towards the back, peering over shoulders. Up close, he could see how bad the magic tricks truly are. They were obviously fake and the tricks extremely noticeable.
But Luke also notice how young the kid is, probably no older than Annabeth.
It tugs at his heart a bit when he sees the kid flourishes a deck of cards with a wide, innocent smile. And in a squeaky, adorable voice proclaims his next trick.
But his purpose here wasn't for the magician. No, it was for the pickpocketer. As inconspicuously as he could, Luke let his eyes wander the crowd, searching for the other kid. He jolts when he did find the kid. Except it's the opposite.
The kid found him first.
Glaring blue eyes stare back at him from the side and Luke forces himself to move his gaze away slowly, to make it seem like he was just surveying the area, before letting it come back to the awful magic trick going on. From the second glance their eyes met, Luke can tell the magician and the kid was related somehow. They share the same hair, the same eye color.
The prickly sensation of being watched did not fade over time and the urge to look back was becoming overwhelming. Eventually, Luke gave in, quickly, just a peek, and found the kid gone.
The feeling of being watched was still there though.
Luke stuffs his hands into his pocket, fisting his wallet to make sure it's still there.
It is.
The magician screams and Luke snap his eyes back front. The kid has a cell phone out, punching the keys vigorously. His face twists into despair and he practically wails for all of New York to hear, "Oh my god, I can't believe I forget to text my mom! I'm supposed to be home right now! Ahh, I need to go!"
The kid begins stuffing all his magic tricks into a plastic bag ignoring the crowds' concerns.
"Do you want a ride home? It's too cold out to be walking."
"Do you know where your mom is? Maybe she should come to you."
"Are you cold? You're shivering!"
The words fall on deaf ears as the boy takes off down a street, weaving through the opposing crowd of walkers with ease. Luke sighs and his eyes wander around, searching for the little pickpocketer. Of course, he wasn't around and Luke was about to call it quits when he notices the emptiness in his pockets.
The wallet was gone, taken right from his hands literally.
Luke did one more useless look around for the thief but, of course, they weren't here.
He stands among the concerned crowd who talked among themselves, still clueless to their missing belongings. He stares at where the kid fled for a moment. Then he takes out a drachma and heads to an alleyway, tossing it onto a puddle of melted ice. As soon as the face appears on the gray, dirtied slush, Luke says, "Hey, Chiron. I found two."
xxxxxxx
Luke shifts from foot to foot, pulling his jacket closer to him. Even with a parka, it still wasn't enough to shut out the cold. He waited for several minutes, checking his watch before stuffing his gloved hands back into his pockets.
Several more minutes pass with him waiting and Luke begins to have doubts. He mutters, "Did I put 35th street? Oh crap...what if put 34th?"
Dyslexia is a total pain in the butt sometimes and Luke was ready to take off when a tiny voice chirp above him.
"Wait! Er, um, Luke?"
Luke pauses, take several steps back, and of course, why didn't he think to check his surroundings first?
Perched on the fire escape are the two boys, the magician and the pickpocketer. With them side by side, staring down at him with identical, blue it was easy to see how alike they are. Too much alike that Luke couldn't tell who was the one to pickpocket him.
"Hi," Luke said with a wave, "You came."
The one on the right, sitting cross-legged on the railing, dug out a piece of paper from his pocket. The piece of paper Luke had hurriedly stuffed into his wallet prior to being stolen.
"Yeah, we did," the one with the paper said.
"'Come to 35th street. My name is Luke. I want to have a chat,'" the other kid stated, standing with his hands in his pockets, "We're here. So what do you want?"
Gods, even their voices are the same.
They stare down at him with distrusting eyes and Luke hates how he can relate to that. He takes another step back so he doesn't have to crank his head so high and attempts to smile. A harmless one, he hopes.
"Nothing much. I just want to talk. Are you twins?"
The one standing frowns. His eyes spark in a way that was familiar. The way they shine, it reminds him of Annabeth. They flicker around, darting left and right before settling on Luke again. "You went through all this trouble to say hi? I don't believe you. Are you working for the police?" His tone holds a note of hysteria and Luke quickly shakes his head, holding up his empty hands.
"No! No, not at all!" He buttons his jacket and lifts his collar, "See? I not wired or anything."
The boy did not calm down at all but the other boy, sitting, leaps to his feet and smiles at his brother.
"See, Connor! I told you he wasn't working for them. He's way too small and scrawny to be a cop."
The kid, Connor, stares at his brother for a long second, "Is your gut tell you that?"
"Yeah!"
"Okay, so I was wrong. I'm sorry. But just because it happens once, doesn't mean it'll—"
"You're wrong! I'm right! This is the best day of my life!"
Luke bites his tongue.
Small? Scrawny?
If anybody is scrawny here, it's the two twins. The measly jacket they each wear hang limply from their bodies. And Luke would bet his whole cash of drachma that they haven't had a decent meal in a while. Looking at their hollow cheeks, Luke would bet even more.
It hurts to think about it. Just a few short months ago, he was them.
The brothers banter back and forth, but Connor is keenly aware of Luke, gaze continuously flickering back and forth between Luke and brother.
"Hey, do you guys have a family?" Luke asks.
Connor opens his mouth but brother beats him to it, "Yeah, my brother." Almost unnoticeably the boy shifts slightly to the left, placing himself between Luke and Connor. He says with a crooked smile, "Sorry, Luke, but we don't have time to stand around and chit chat."
Connor butts his way to the front, "Yeah, tell us what you want now. Some of us have stuff to do."
Luke paused, searching for the right words. He trained for this. Chiron had trained him.
The ways to see if they're a demigod, ways to bring up Camp Half Blood, ways to persuade the kid and parent to let them attend for the summer.
But this is different. There's no Chiron by this side. There's no satyr to see if they are demigods. There's no parent.
He looks up at them.
At one boy with sharp, piercing eyes and the other with bright, clear ones.
Gods, they remind Luke of them so much.
Annabeth with her perceptiveness. Thalia with her up-frontness.
Luke bites his cheeks. Drawing in a deep breath and exhaling, he blinks back the tear-pricks sensation and smiles.
"Have you two heard of Camp Half Blood? It's a special place for people like you and me.”
aaaaaaand the rewrite is almost doubled the original. I don't know how this happened. But it's almost done and I can finally move on and work on something else.
I was cleaning up and found this. And omg I remembered I used to write drafts on paper first before transcribing to google docs 😭
Karen’s part ended up being very very different from it’s original conception.

“Jason told me… that… your Camp, is more like a summer camp than a training camp. That… none of you are required to stay full time like we are. That you have the option to come and go whenever you want. And those who stayed are those with no where to go. Tell me, those who stayed year round, how do they get their education?”
“Well, it’s a mixture of Chiron, the dryads, some satyrs, rarely Mr. D, Annabeth, and some other year-rounders who teach.”
“But just that, right? Just learning? Just schoolwork?”
“Yeah! It was great. From 8 to 2 we have regular school time, then afterwards we’re free to do whatever we want as long as we finish the homework.”

“If You survive this, Melvin, then I’ll live too,” Victoria whispers,
Melvin smile, bitter and with disbelief. “You sure? With those chest injuries? With those punctures? I’m surprised you’re not dead already.”
“Survive,” Victoria repeats, “And I promise I will too.”

Matt’s eyes twinkle. “What about trains? Can you mess with trains? Because I want to pull a prank on Larry. Can you imagine all of us getting on Bart and you just shutting the door in his face? That would be hilarious.”
“Isn’t Larry a son of Mercury? He’ll just open it back up. Besides, what if you break the train doing that?” Melvin worries, “That would be a major inconvenience to literally thousands of people in the Bay Area.”
“It’s not going to break it, Mel. Trust me. I would know,” Matt says with a roll of his eyes, “Besides Larry never showed he can do manipulation like that. But alright. Ida then.”
“Our centurion? Our centurion that always covers our asses? That’s even stupider!” Melvin shrieks and Victoria has to agree. Ida has done a lot for them. She doesn’t deserve any mischief they’re aching for.
“I vote for Reyna,” Victoria says.
She doesn’t even need to look to know Matt is grinning wolfishly. “I second that vote.”
“Third,” Maki says with disinterest.
“Fourth!” Travis chimes in needlessly.
“I can’t believe you guys,” Melvin sighs, sinking into his seat, probably plotting a way to leave their friend group to avoid all association, “Reyna is going to make you guys clean up Hannibal’s feces forever.”
“Then we pull the prank our last week. Easy peasy,” Victoria dismisses with a wave of our hand.
“And how are we gonna convince Reyna to go anywhere near a BART station?”
“That’s an issue we have all year to figure out, Melvin. You worry too much. It’s going to give you wrinkles,” Matt
“Fake a crisis,” Travis offers, “Like a monster attack.”

“I’m not a monster. I’ll protect the children and the frail with all I have. But the able-bodied? The adults, my seniors, who are more than capable?” Victoria grins, wolfish and bitter. “They’re on their own.”

“We only get a free day a month for fun .”
“One day??? Why just one day?”
“It’s a carrot on a stick. To remind us what is waiting after our service.”

She sees lavinia in your usual roost at the University bell tower, tearing angrily into a sandwich as she looks down somewhere. Their eyes met and Victoria waves with a small smile. Lavinia waves back with a brighter smile, no longer worried about her hiding spot being rattted out. Not that Victoria would ever. Her loyalty lies with the sliders, not for the wellbeing of this camp.
It’s so hard to believe that Lavinia and Melvin are the same age, Melvin’s such a tightly rolled ball of anxiety compared to Lavinia’s free and strong spirit. But she supposes that’s what being a child soldier since 6 years old does to you.

Travis blinks at her, owlish and wide.
“Oh that,” Travis laughs, insincere and muffled. “It’s okay. As long as you realized. It’s all good.”

“No. It’s not. Stop lying and just say it.”
“What?”
“You’re mad at me. There’s a lot you want to say but you’re scared it’ll hurt my feelings. And Maybe it will. Maybe it won’t. But this worry you have, Travis, of hurting people’s feelings especially towards someone as rude as me? Get rid of it. Sometimes, it’s deserved.

Victoria doesn’t catch what they’re saying, but Lavinia is certainly into it, laughing way too loudly as her eyes shine with uncontained unmirth. Her eyes sparkle more when she catches them coming up.

“Travis says she’s down to visiting, but Terminus is a problem and some people on the senate apparently. They don’t trust her or something like that. So all of us need to write a letter vouching for her character because Travis’s opinion isn’t enough. Come on, let’s head back to barracks and write that—”
“We can do that after Round 1,” Melvin says, “Besides, where’s Travis?”
“He’s not behind me?” Maki whirls around, eyes roving the paved streets for the son of Hermes for a long ten seconds, before she’s whirling back to face them, not a single bit sheepish or apologetic, but rather, matter of factly, stating in her calm voice, “He’s not behind me. I left him at the bakery.”
“You all truly have a one of a kind hospitality,” Melvin groans, exasperated as he starts jogging towards the bakery. And like little annoying ducklings, the rest of them follow. “It’s a wonder why Travis isn’t fed up with us.”
“He can leave, you know. Find some better people to hang out with,” Victoria says, but Maki and Matt both veto her.
“No! I need him to get to Mikaela!” Maki snarls.
Matt shakes his head. “He’s my easy gateway into Camp Half Blood.”
“I bet he already left,” she grumbles under her breath.
But to her immense disappointment, Travis is still there — sipping on his iced matcha latte with a half eaten brioche hun — and there’s a familiar girl sitting on the opposite side of the small cafe table. Lavinia Asimov is unmistakable with her adorable pink hair.
Victoria doesn’t catch what they’re saying, but Lavinia is certainly into it, laughing way too loudly as her eyes shine with uncontained unmirth. Her eyes sparkle more when she catches them coming up. Lavinia clutches her arm with an iron grip, her friend’s eyes sparkling with pure, unadulterated joy.
“Victoria! Great news! Travis can get our tickets for free! Isn’t that—”
“Shh!! Not so loud. You want Reyna to find out?” she hisses, looking around at the lingering bakery enjoyers, but it looks like nobody heard them. Or if they did, they don’t care. Still though, one can never be too careful.
“Is this about the tap dancing competition in San Francisco?” Matt asks.
“It’s called the Tap Festival and yes! Victoria was going to buy my registration and drive me there. And in exchange, I promise to sneak us out to a Kpop concert in May.”
Travis perks up. “Which band? I know someone at camp who’s really into Kpop too and she might—”
“Not invited,” Victoria snaps, the same time Melvin groans, “I wish you guys wouldn’t sneak out so much. It’s unbefitting for legionnaires. We should be setting an example.”
Lavinia challenges, “Then rat us out, Melv, if it bothers you so much.”
And like clockwork, Melvin crumbles in on himself, running a hand through his hair and sighing in defeat. “You know I would never.”
“Then I guess that’s that.” Lavinia leans back in her chair, crossing her arms as her eyes gleam with self-satisfaction.
It’s so hard to believe that Lavinia and Melvin are the same age, Melvin’s such a tightly rolled ball of anxiety compared to Lavinia’s strong spirit. But she supposes that’s what being a child soldier since 6 years old does to you.
“More importantly, the most important of topics, literally the whole reason why we’re here,” Maki interrupts, shoving her way up to the table and slamming a hand down on the table. If people weren’t listening, they’re definitely listening now. “Mikaela, Travis. Mikaela. Have you thought about it? Are you going to get her here?”
“Well, I’ve been trying to get her to come visit but Terminus doesn’t like visitors who aren’t here on official business.”
“I’ll vouch for her then. I’ll bat for her. And if you convince her to open a bakery here, my life is yours. I’ll work at her store for minimum wage — no, for free. I’ll devote my entire life to her francise if she wishes for it.”
“Maki, you’re obsessed,” Lavinia comments and Maki doesn’t hesitate to snap back.
“And so are you about your tap dancing, Ms. Tappy Tap Tap.”
Victoria groans as Lavinia laughs, getting up from the chair. “Work on your insults. They’re so weak. Anyway I should be going now. I’m supposed to be helping Bobby with Hannibal.”
“You’re skipping on chore duty? Don’t you have a fresh recruit?”
“Hey, it’s unfair to get only one day a month to relax.

“Here? But this is still New Rome,” Travis says dubiously, looking out the window to the outskirts of their city.
“And?”
”It’s literally a ten minute walk from the university. Why did we drive here?”
“Victoria wanted to show off her driving skills. She has a bit of an egotistical streak when it comes to driving,” Maki says with a roll of her eyes as she unbuckles herself.
“What can I say? It comes with being the only one who has their license,” she says with a shrug. “Now everybody out. We need to Carpe Diem this day and time is ticking.”
“That’s grammatically incorrect,” Melvin tells her, opening the door and holding it for Matt. “Diem means day. You’re basically saying seize the day the day.”
“Out, out, out. The day is wasting away,” she sings.
New Rome is the heart and pride of their community. A work of marvel from some of the best arteticsts and engineers around. It’s completely walkable. A car is 100% unnecessary to get around Camp Jupiter. It’s just a fashion statement at this point. Every necessity — groceries, laundromat, 24 hr fitness — at least a half mile radius from the residents. It’s supposed to be their paradise, their slice of heaven, when they retire and they’re free from the responsibilities of a legionnaire.
She thinks she’s supposed to feel excitement. But she’s feeling nothing. If she dwells on it, there’s a roiling pot of disgust boiling in her stomach. It’s a sensation she’s not entirely proud of, so she doesn’t dwell on it.
Victoria walks down the cobblestone streets of New Rome without taking in much of anything. She ignores the children playing in the grand fountains, the music filling the clear skies, the retired legionnaires chatting underneath grape vines treasses.
It’s so domestic. It’s so peaceful. It’s so utterly benign and bland that It makes her want to vomit.
“Victoria,” Melvin whispers, sidling up next to her as Matt, Maki, and Travis roam ahead. She thinks Melvin is going to give her a lecture of being a nicer person but he’s just tapping his nose. “Don’t look so upset. Terminus may sense your ill will and kick us out.”
Victoria musters a grin. “Better?”
Melvin grimaces. “Not really.”
“Well this is all I can do.”
“Victoria—”
Whatever Melvin is going to say is cut off when Maki twirls on her heel to face them and announces, “I want an iced Matcha latte from Maiko’s before we go to Round 1. And basque cake from Rome’s bakery.”
Before any of them can reject it, Travis’s eyes brighten. “Yes! Let’s go! I always see Tera buying them before our intro to Rome history, but I never know where and I always wanted to try it.”
Maki, with her massive sweet-tooth, beams. She’s actually smiling, actually ecstatic and for what? Some mediocre cake that literally any home cook can surpass? Maki loops her hand around Travis’s arm, tearing him from Matt’s side. “Finally. A man of culture. You get me, Travis, unlike these philistine bozos. I’ll pay for your drink. My treat. Think of it as a “Welcome to New Rome” gift.”
“But their specialty is croissants. Everything else is mid. And Maiko’s is overpriced for what it is,” Victoria says, maybe needlessly but it’s the truth.
“Didn’t ask. Don't care. Go fuck yourself,” Maki says over her shoulder as she pulls Travis along, not that she needed to pull for long. Travis happily follows her with this embarrassing skip in his steps.
Matt slows until he’s beside her as she and Melvin head in the direction of the New Forum reluctantly.
“I like him,” Matt says with an easy grin. “He’s pretty cool. You guys know he ran his cabin with his little brother since he was 13?”
“I thought only one person runs the cabin.”
“Travis likes sharing with his brother. He talks about his brother a lot actually. I think he misses him. But can you imagine? Sharing? None of you guys could ever.”
“What about my calculus textbook I loaned you?” Melvin retorts, “And my notes that you didn’t take during class because you always stayed up too late studying the Korean vocab quiz that you still fail? And me tutoring you in English literature?”
Matt sighs. “I think at this point I should give up on ever getting into New Rome University and settle on becoming a mechanic like my moms.”
“Take a gap year, you’re only 16. You have all the time in the world to decide if college is the right path for you,” Victoria comments, “Take it easy in New Rome as a lab assistant or intern.”
“With my grades? Who’s going to want a C-average student?” Matt laments.
“With your personality, I’m sure you can get in anywhere. Part of networking is being personable, you know,” Melvin says, “I mean, look at us. I’m socially awkward, Victoria is socially aggressive, and Maki is socially apathetic. All 3 of us have almost no friends outside of the cohort.”
“Speak for yourself. I get along great with Lavinia and Bobby.”
“Also rule breakers,” Melvin points out.
“Actually I was talking with Travis. About my lack of future and poor grades. About how it keeps me up at night, thinking what’s next after I retire from the legion. If I even have a chance out there.”
“And why, pray tell, were you telling the new guy, a total stranger mind you, a completely random person that you met today, all this?”
“And Travis offered his camp. He said the same thing you did. A gap year. He said I could do it at Camp Half Blood if I wanted. Apparently, the children of Ares and Hephaestus would be cool if I want to switch cabins every couple of days or weeks.”
“Besides, I want to meet his little brother, Connor.”
“You want to move to the otherside of the country to meet someone’s little brother?”
Whatever Matt was about to say was interrupted by Maki bulldozing Matt down, just a blur of a body as she slams into Matt at max velocity. Matt crumples to the ground and Maki too, but Maki recovers extraordinarily well.
“Guys!” Maki hisses, picking Matt back up without a pause either to use him as a ragdoll as she shakes his shoulder. “Guys! GUYS! He knows Mikaela! Mikaela Huang of the Bay!”
Melvin perks up. “That genius 20 year old at UC Berkeley with a doctorate in astronomy?”
“Who cares about the fucking doctorate! She makes the most amazing cakes and croissants in all of the Bay Area! She’s literally in all the newsletters and in all the guides for foodies. And he’s friends with her! He knew her as a child! She personally bakes him Strawberry Shortcakes! She personally makes him caramel frappes! She and he are friends. Do you get what I’m saying?! Do you understand what is at stake here?!?”
“She’s a demigod?” Victoria asks, surprised. “But she’s so accomplished academically.”
“That’s ableist, Victoria.” Melvin frowns.
“Athena, I think. Or maybe Aphrodite? Demeter? Maybe Poseidon or Zeus, I don’t know, I stopped listening for a minute when Travis said her name. It’s one of the 12 Olympians. More importantly, I need your help. We all need to convince Travis to convince her to visit. I have to meet her in person. I have to see if she’s willing to take on an apprentice. I—I—I have to get her signature. I need to shake her hand. I have to see if she likes the crocheted doll I made in her image. I—”
“Maki, as one of best friends in your very limited circle of friends, I am going to straight up tell you that Mikaela will file a restraining order against you for being a creep if you even reveal 1% of your obsession,” Matt groans, picking him up and clutching his gut as he recovers from the tackle. “Besides, where’s Travis?”
“Which group?
Are you going to get her here or not?”
“Well, I’ve been trying to get her to come visit but Terminus doesn’t like visitors who aren’t here on official business.”
“I’ll vouch for her then. I’ll bat for her. I’ll put my entire reputation on the line. And if you convince her to open a bakery here, my life is yours. I’ll work at her store for minimum wage — no, for free. I’ll devote my entire life to her francise if she wishes for it.”
“Maki, you’re obsessed. It’s kind of scary actually,” Lavinia comments, unflinching of Maki’s glare as she slurps the last of the matcha latte. “I should be going now. I’m supposed to be helping Bobby with Hannibal.”
“You’re skipping chore duty? Don’t you have a fresh recruit? What if they catch your bad ”
The pink-haired “Hey. I needed this break. I had a rough week with algebra.”

“The trick is to watch it first and time it. Most of the machines only work after 10 fails with the 11th applying a bit more grip before it resets again,” Matt tells Travis.
“That’s kind of scammy.”
“Right. So the tactic is to just wait for some sucker to use up as much swipes as they can

A warning of a battle. A warning of a decimation.
And from the scrappy boy that had once attacked their camp with his flying dragon-ship, now the savior of the twelve legion with his news of Caligula’s attack.
24 hours to prepare. Not nearly enough time. But better than nothing. Better than the alternative, of being woken up with the sword in her stomach.
Victoria watches Tera and Gwendolyn from the fifth cohort, both freshly retired, don their armor. The former with reluctance, the latter with a fake smile, but a smile nonetheless as she races to her cohort’s side. She wonders what they think. She wonders if they’re wishing they’re not here right now.
“Just like old times, huh?” Tera mutters, grimacing as she tightens her elbow pads. Victoria doesn’t miss the bitter glare her senior throws her way. “Too bad Lupa never got more of those fresh recruits she said she was going to get. Maybe then I wouldn’t need to fight.”
“You let Matt take a spear for you again and I’ll stab you myself,” she warns, picking her spatha and tucking it against her belt. “If you let anybody take a hit for you, I’m going to personally end you.”
“That’s treason,” Tera says without an inkling of fear.

Victoria doesn't really go to arcades. The only arcades she’s familiar with are from cartoons. But she feels like Round 1 looks like the typical arcade. Low and dim lights. Loud blaring pop music. Carpets that are horribly tacky and belong to the 80s. Claw machines with prizes of various sizes. Arcade games where you can trade tickets for overpriced tickets. A bowling alley with chewy fries and bland pizzas.
Does it sound like she’s complaining too much?
Is she getting across just how much
“We all share a card and get a turn each,” Melvin explain, taking out his wallet and removing a red card with the company’s name printed in white.
“Why not get your own?” Travis asks like an idiot.
“Have you seen the prices? It’s crazy expensive,” Matt says.
“There are tiny prizes the sizes of keychains. They’re fairly easy to get. Then the small prizes the size about tennis ball size, medium prizes the size of . Then there’s the big fish. The big wazoo. The coll

and kind to those you value. You know, once you get past all those nasty layers of derision.”
Victoria scoffs. “So what? You want me to be nicer to him? Give him a try?”
“No. It’s fine to keep picking on him like this. He’s not a weak, soft-spined crybaby. Eventually he’ll snap and well, I think that’s when you’ll like him.”

Travis ignores her comment and walks past her to head inside. Matt jogs to Travis’s side and Melvin gives her a stink eye as he walks passed. Victoria shrugs and follows after them but Maki pulls her back with a hand on her upper arm. Victoria thought it was going to be spiel about her being nicer, being more friendly, to stop being a dick. But Maki knows her long enough to know her deal.
“Hey,” Maki starts, then takes a sip of her new matcha latte she’d ordered before leaving, and ends with, “I think you’ll like Travis when this day is over.”
Victoria waits for more but it seems like that is all Maki wanted to say because she’s back to drinking her latte and fine. She’ll ask.
“And what makes you think that?” Victoria questions.
“My intuition.”
“Care to be more specific?”
“You’re gonna have to see for yourself,” Maki says, all mysterious and shit.
“Cute. But Only true assholes want to be my friend. Half-assed, nice wannabes like Travis just aren’t drawn to me nor me to him.”
“Thanks for such a stellar compliment about my character,” Maki says dryly, “but Don’t sell yourself short, Vic. You’re a great person. You’re just bull-headedly passionate. And You care. You care a bit too much and too fiercely. That it just scares people away.”
Victoria scoffs and turns away to hide what is surely her burning face. “So what? You want me to be nicer to him? Give him a try?”
“No,” Maki says softly, “It’s fine to keep picking on him like this. He’s not a weak, soft-spined crybaby. When he snaps, I think that’s when you’ll like him.”
“You and your intuition. Always giving you the most subtle and useless signals.”
“I’ve never been wrong before. Trust me.”

“Alright, I’m out,” Matt announces, wiping some goo out of his eyes then wiping his hand on her shirt sleeve. “I feel like this is going to end in some big massive explosion and I'm not here for that. I’m taking a shower and then studying for the vocab quiz that’s this Monday. Have fun with all this, Vicky. Don’t get too carried away. Travis, I’ll hit you up later for an application to Camp Half Blood. Melvin, I want a cat toy. Any will do.”

Against her better judgement, she does so, digging it out of her wallet and dropping it into Travis’s waiting hand. Except Trbis’s moves his hand out of the way the last second. The plastic card drops onto the carpeted floor with a plink.

“Missed yet again, Beth. All these years and you still haven’t gotten any better,” she taunts as she strides up to the group of 3, cracking her knuckles. They’re retired legionnaires and they must be in their late twenties. But Victoria can probably take them. In this boundary where Terminus prohibits all weapons, that means all they have are their fists. And she has never lost in a fist to fist fight.
“What are you doing here?” Beth

“Hey, Travis. Wanna know something cool? Terminus teleports those who breaks the rules outside of New Rome.”
“Neat. Good thing I haven’t broken any rules.

Victoria glances up to see Travis looking down at her with an unnerving smile. There’s calculations running through his face. Just acceptance, like this is something he’s predicting. And ah.

“Well, I don’t want to talk about them with you.” Travis pulls ahead, Matt following after giving her a disappointed shake of his head.
“Victoria!” Melvin hisses, “There are appropriate questions to ask and then there is a no-go zone and you crossed that no-go area by a whole ten miles!”
“You went too far with that one,” Maki agrees, “If Travis attacks you, I’m not helping.”
“I know. What I said was pretty shitty.”
“I don’t understand what your deal is with this guy. Travis is nice enough. You’re being an ass for no reason,” Melvin whispers “What’s with you? You’re never this mean.”

“Hey, Tell me Travis. I want to hear your opinion. Before you are two roads and at the end there are two people, a child no older than 13 to your left, a person from your cohort that you’ve been watching and training together for about a year.. And to your right, citizens of the city you’re sworn to protect, a young family. A retired legionnaire mother and father no older than 26 with their young daughter of just 4 years old. You’re in a battle. There are arrows and cannons whizzing over your head. Screams and yells echoing in your ear. Your forearm is bleeding and aching because you stupidly tripped and scrapped it against a brick wall in your haste to get to the city. They both are calling for your help. They both are struggling with their enemy. And you are only you, with no ability to duplicate yourself. Who do you go to?”
“There’s no way to help both?”
“Not when you’re slow like me.”
“Then to the 13 year old, easy.”
“Why?”
“Because they’ll for sure die without help. If the mom and dad are retired legionnaires, they can probably handle it themselves right? I mean, those retired legionnaires I fought last summer seem pretty capable.”
“Then by Roman law, you picked wrong and would have been executed.”
“That’s the choice I made. In 2007, the titan Krios managed to snuck his army into our camp and attacked in the dead of night. It was a horrible battle in the middle of New Rome. None of us were prepared for it. And that day, I was presented with that choice. Save the kid I’ve seen go from a bumbling idiot with a sword to less of a bumblebee and almost to a competent fighter. Or save the family I sworn to protect when I enlisted. I chose my cohort and because of that, the father died. And the surviving widow wanted me executed for turning my back on them and neglecting my duty. It was a pretty close call actually. But the praetors at the time managed to convince the senate and the mother that I should just be demoted and once I complete my ten years of service that I am to be expul from Camp Jupiter. with zero access to New Rome once I complete my service. So, here I am.”
But what kind of message does that send? That the lives of the army are worth less than the civilians? When this army specifically is made up primarily of teens? And they told me, that yes, We signed up for this when we enlisted. We should be prepared to die for them. Bullshit, right? I was 8 when I enlisted. My dad wasn’t there to read the fineprint when I got the tattoo. I didn’t read the fine print. I don’t know a single child who would ever read the fineprint. Melvin, he was also centurion at the time and he stepped down with me.”
“That night, I dreamt of a voice. You ever dreamt of a voice? You have.” She doesn’t need him to confirm. Not when his jaw is clenching and his eyes narrows into slits. “It promised me change. It promised me a better future, a better society. I thought about it, you know, like any reasonable 13 year old who’s been through emotional turmoil. But when it told me I had to lie to my friends, I rejected the voice. Was it the same for you?”
“Does it matter?

She does so out of muscle memory of following her eyes guide. And not a second later, her Round 1 card flies past her ears at speeds that would have definitely hurt. The air whistles as the card zooms past her, boomeranging back around her to Travis’s waiting palm.
Warning alarm 2 sounds its bell.
She raises her eyebrows at Travis who smiles back at her with a goofy-ass grin, mouth remaining shut.

Warning 3 sounds its bell.
Travis knows about her powers.

“Go on,” Travis says, nodding his head for her to go, “it’s still your turn.”
Victoria slams her cue stick hard on the ground, the nearby underpaid staff wincing at the hard slam, and tilts her chin up. “How about you stop shitting around and just say what you’re thinking, huh?”
“What do you mean?” Travis lies with his disgusting innocent facade. If she was any less

And I’m deserving of your assholery? Why? What I do? I never met you before in my life.”
“You killed my friends last summer,” she lied flawlessly, without a single hitch to her voice or a pause in her voice, “When my camp was attacked by your Leo Valdez.”
But it’s not enough to bypass the innate lie detector apparently. Travis clocks it right away, not missing a beat. “Liar.”
She throws her hands up. “Fine, fine. I’m just an asshole who hates dishonest people who play pretend and you’re as dishonest as it comes, Travis.”
Travis freezes, jerks to a stop, face unreadable. “Why do you think I’m being dishonest?”
“Call it intuition. I’ve seen enough liars to know. You’re pretending. You’re lying to yourself. You’re acting. And .”
“You’re shitting around.”

“I just don’t understand what I did to make you hate me so much,” Travis rants, “I never drew blood from any of you when you invaded my home and threatened my family. The worst I did was give somebody a bruise. If anything I should be angry at you because somebody twice my age gave Cecil a concussion and almost skewered Julia. When I came to defend them, that person scurried off like a rat.”
“Yeah, that checks out” she agrees, “New Rome is full of cowardly people. They picked on You should angry. You’re It’s not okay. Pathetic isn’t it? That our adults think it’s okay
“Because I hate weak people. Don’t you know? To get to this camp, to even make it here, you are tested. You are screened. You are judged by Lupa. At your most vulnerable, when you are just a little budding, before you even hit your potential, when you are just a child, you are appraised as either worthy or unworthy. Those who are strong will survive. Those who are weak will be eaten.”
“... what does that have to do with anything?”
“Because it’s all a lie. Lupa’s logic is inherently flawed. Camp Jupiter is full of—”
“Victoria, that’s enough. There are ears everywhere.” Matt says. It’s the tone of his voice that says he’s not joking. “Let’s go to the track and field now.”

Sometimes, Victoria wishes she could meet this Luke Castellan and pick his brain, see why he did what he did. She heard so many things.

Of course none of it means much because those who suffered were

They want her to feel pride. They want her to be honored that they serve to protect this community. They demand that she respects the civilians here.
There’s people glaring at her as she walks past them. She doesn’t know them by name, but their faces are familiar. They were definitely at that battle when the Titan infiltrated with his army all those years ago. They glare at her with malice in their eyes and hatred in their souls. She could practically taste their bloodlust.
She sees double, of herself stepping to the right by about half a foot. So she does so, stepping on Melvin’s toes as she does so. A sizable rock flies past where her head would be. Definitely big enough to give her a concussion if it had landed.
A bigger person would have walked away. A bigger person would have understood their anger towards her. A bigger person would leave them be.
But she’s not a big person. Not when she’s barely hitting 5’3”. She’s as petty as petty can be. Melvin gives her a subtle shake of his head as Maki’s eyes narrow to slits and Matt’s smile becomes more of a threat.
It’s not worth it. Melvin is telling her, a hand coming up to grab her arm.
Unfortunately she’s never one to listen.
She spins around and sneers at the 3 demigods who had thrown the rock at her. “Missed yet again, losers. Maybe some time back in legion will improve your aim. Wanna come back with us?”
The one in the center, Nevada if she remembers correctly, a retiree from the fourth cohort, opens her mouth, but Travis comes bounding back to them, clueless as ever as he interrupts what should have been a good warm-up for tomorrow’s combat training.
“What’s up? What’s going on between you guys? Natalie?”
Ah Natalie. Close enough. How’d they know each other? Natalie is almost hitting her 28th birthday. No one that old wants to hang with teenagers like them.
“It’s nothing, Travis, but if I were you, I would find better company. Victoria is someone who would—”
“Finish that sentence. I dare you,” Matt jumps in with a brazen wild smile.
“Yeah? And what are you going to do? Fight us?” Natalie scoffs but there’s this hint of doubt.
“Bet.” Victoria smirks.
“Just find better people to hang out with Travis. The second cohort is a bunch of cowards. Your grade for the lab report will be uploaded soon so keep an eye on that.”
So a grad student having to be a TA to fulfill their research requirement, huh?
As Nat leaves, Travis turns back to them. “What was that all about? What story?”
“It’s—”
“None of your business, Mr. Nosey,” Victoria interrupts, liking how Travis’s jaw clicks shut and there’s a whiff of irritation on his otherwise passive face.

“Hey, tell me something, Travis. Your fauns, the satyrs, when they go looking for demigods, do they ever do tests?”
“Tests? To see if you’re a demigod? Usually satyrs can smell that sort of thing.”
“No, like tests to prove you are worth bringing to Camp Half Blood.”
Travis shakes his head and snorts something under his breath. “Imagine if they did. I think Holly and Laurel would have traumatized Donnie from ever looking for another demigod.
“But what if they meet a shy demigod or an emotionally weak demigod or a not too bright demigod or a scared out of their mind, starving, not thinking clearly 8 year old?”
Travis blinks at her in confusion and that tells her all she needs to know. “They… still take them to camp? Is this supposed to be a trick question?”
“They don’t eat them?”
“Our satyrs are vegetarians.” “Does Lupa really eat those who fail? It’s not meant as a scare tactic? Because not going to lie, but that means Jason did the house thing when he’s not even 3 years old. As strong as Jason is, I don’t think a toddler can prove themselves really well.”
“She eats those who fail. You get attacked by a monster and you don’t win, you get injured, you’re unable to move, and you're unable to complete the training, Lupa finishes the job. Conquer or die. There’s no rhyme or reason with her. Camp Jupiter isn’t as forgiving as Camp Half Blood. I know they tell us all how we’re so much better. We have a community. We have a society. We have generational knowledge. But it was all built on a sea of blood.”

“Tell me the truth, Travis.”
“I’m lonely, alright? Shoot me if it's a crime.”
Is it because they all died? Because of us? Or was it the titans?”
“Does it matter?” Travis says, all bitter and “They’re still gone either way.”

The observation should have rubbed her the wrong way. “I am. Why? You’re surprised?”

“It’s home-like,” is all Travis says.
Victoria laughs, resting a hand on her hip. “You’re kidding. You’re telling me none of that drives you away?”
Travis shrugs. “It reminds me of my cabin. Are there a lot of you guys here?”
“In the second cohort? 50 right now which is more or less the same for each cohort. Lupa went on a searching frenzy after the Giant war so we got more than usual right now. Each barrack holds 10 of us so we’re not overcrowded. And if we need more, we can build more.” Victoria opens Matt’s nightstand, digging through the stack of his belongings to find his CD carrying case. She zips it open and flips through until she finds the disc she wants. She slips it out of its protective slot, glancing at Travis with a slight smile. “You ever played Super Smash Bro before?”
The gleam in Travis’s eyes tells her all she needs to know and she gets it set up, pushing the TV on the cart closer to her bed, pulling out the Wii remotes from a drawer underneath, and powering the Wii on. She slips the disc in then tosses the controller to Travis sitting on her bed who almost fumbles it.
“Do you have a gamecube controller?” Travis asks, staring at the Wii remote with such disdain Victoria almost laughs.
“Nope,” she lies, settling in beside Travis as she selects group mode, “Just deal with it. Learn on the spot. The mechanics are still the same.”
“I know how to use it. I just don’t want to. My friend threw the Wii remote during Mario Party once. It broke our TV. Chiron blamed me and Connor even though we didn’t do it,” Travis grumbles as he selects Pikachu.
Victoria chortles, picking Peach. “Because you two are usually the one getting in trouble?”
“Maybe, yeah, but not this time. It was Malcolm’s fault, but Chiron refused to believe it because Malcolm never do anything wrong. He even confessed, said he did it. But Chiron just assumed Malcolm was covering for us.”
“The perks of being a good kid. The same thing happens with me whenever Melvin does a whoopsie. I get blamed. How good are you by the way? At this game, I mean.”
“Okay-ish.”
“Well, I’m very good. Not a brag, just a fact.”
“Of course you are,” Travis says, no hint of animosity.
She demolishes Travis. She absolutely destroys him. She is gutting him right now. Part of it is definitely because of her eyes, seeing the most critical hits. A part of it is also because she’s just that good. All that time she spent playing this game, reading up the tactics, practicing with Melvin, has accumulated to her being somewhat decent. She has to be good. There’s no way in hell she’s losing to Castille or anybody else that’s a whole 3 school grades younger than her. Her pride would never recover. The teasing would never end. With her ego, she refuses to be a loser.
“You’re a hacker,” Travis sighs as he furiously spam the buttons to no avail, jumping, double jumping towards the ledge.
“It’s called being talented,” she says with a victorious smirk as she dashes towards the ledge and smacks Pikachu off the screen. Another victory. Man, does she love winning. “You sure you don’t want to switch characters?”
Travis chews on his cheek as if debating with himself. But ultimately he shakes his head. “I always pick Pikachu. Connor always picks Jigglypuff. We’re like the Pokemon duos.”
“What? Are you gonna say Connor is better than you?” she snorts, using her special to block a hit with Toad.
“No. We both kinda suck. Our other friend, Sherman, is really good. But I’m a bit better than Connor is.”
“Egotistical,” she sings-songs without meaning it as Peach elbow drops Pikachu off the screen.
She hums the theme song as she goes about her decimation, winning truly is life’s greatest joy sometimes. Travis has entirely given up and resigned to a fate as Peach's punching bag. And oh man does Peach loves punching when Victoria is in control.
“Castille says there is gonna be a new Super Smash Bro game in 2017 with a new Nintendo console. And also a new Zelda game. Supposedly a massive hit. You ever played any Zelda games?”
“Some,” Travis comments nonchalantly as he runs Pikachu around the stage evading her and Peach’s indiscriminate hands. “Windwaker. Phantom Hourglass. Ocarina of Time. Do you have Mario Kart?”

“Left eye, right eye. That’s what the others call me and Matt when we team up. The left eye that sees all faults and weaknesses. The right eye that sees only momentary victory. The left eye that loses the battle but wins the war. The right eye that wins the battle, but loses the war. Together, we cover each other weaknesses.”
“That’s a horrible team name, you know?”
“Shut it. Reyna gave us that title.”
“And that’s supposed to make it cool? It’s lame.”
“It’s called being respectful and not telling Reyna your thoughts about this.”

The loud and accomplished become centurions fast. Frank did it the fastest going from probatio to Centurion to Praetor in record time. I was the youngest to become a centurion at 9. And it was the same for most of us. Hazel within a year, Reyna within 2 years Jason for all his strength and wisdom became a centurion only years after.

“My mother. She is the goddess of victory. Winning is ingrained in my blood, in my mind, and my gifts. My eyes,” she taps a finger at her right temple. “It gives me an image of what I need to do to win. As long as I am capable enough, if it's something feasible, something within my realm of capacity, I can see it.”
“Woah so like, for example?”
“For example, if I study and understand my algebra, I see what I need to write for a perfect score. If I , I can Sometimes. I even beat Jason once in a sword fight, you know. Years ago, before he developed all those electricity powers.”
“But if you were against five chimeras, then—”
She grimaces. “Then my eye will show me how to win, by escaping and surviving, if it's possible.
“If it’s possible,” Travis stays silent. Then out of the blue, “is that why you always win on the first try with the claws? Your eyes tell you which one is on their timer?”
“Yup!”
Travis grins. “Cheater,”
“We call it strategic pillaging.”

The sentry on guard, Brian from the fourth, he fell asleep because he pulled an allnighter studying for his algebra exam. At least, that’s the excuse Brian used. I know him. I know he wouldn’t fall asleep while on duty like that. Most likely scenario was that the enemy poisoned him, but there hadn’t been solid proof. He… killed himself a couple days after the battle. He blamed himself. His suicide was brushed under the rug because, well, morale.
When the dust settled, all cohorts were punished for letting such a horrific battle happen within the grounds. “What were you doing? Why didn’t you stop this?” They took away privileges, made us train a lot more, pushed all of us to our limits. It was Jason who spoke up again. Said this was bullshit. In a respectful way of course. But still. Still.

Victoria understands. She understands so well. If not from the stories of all the dead friends Travis told her about, then her own personal experiences. The young and the inexperienced die early. It’s an unfortunate truth. There’s a certain reserveness she has to have towards those newly enlisted. Once they make it past their first year, they are solid. The chances of someone with as much experience as her dying? It’s not zero, but it’s definitely lower than a newbie. Victoria lets the mask slip for a second. She doesn’t let her hurt show. She would be eaten alive if she did that. She learned from her mistake. Instead she lets an inkling of her ever present resentment seep through.
───── ⋆⋅☆⋅⋆ ─────
56
“Rating time,” she says out loud because what else is she supposed to do? The hacking and slashing is monotonous. “Where would you guys place this battle?”
“Above Mount Othrys,” Melvin pants, pulling his gladius free from the back of a zombie.
“Below Mount Othrys,” Maki yells from behind them, the whirring of her manuballista as she cranks the handle back, aimed at the diaper vultures.
“About the same. This kinda reminds me of Mount Othrys actually, the endless drivel, the hopelessness,” Matt jokes as he uses the scutum to push five corpses back before stabbing them all with a gladius he picks up from the ground. His , “Thank gods Tera isn’t here. I don’t think I can take another spear for her.”
“Focus,” Ida yells at them.
───── ⋆⋅☆⋅⋆ ─────
57
Ida gives commands from where she’s posted, center back on an elevated rock, and Victoria does as ordered. Deal with the incoming enemies on 0200. Then take on the zombies coming from 1200. A eurynomos approaching from 1000. Another batch of zombies advancing from 11. The eurynomos coming from 0100. The eurynomos. The eurynomos, someone get the fucking eurynomos coming from —
A squeal from behind her snaps her out of the mind-numbing extermination.
Victoria spins around, sees double of herself ducking — committing to the act, stabbing her gladius up under the zombie’s jaw that’s vaulting overhead — before getting back up to her feet and looking where the squeal came from.
It’s — It’s Mikaela. The eurynomos is — its claws are in her scutum, wrapping the metal shield like putty as their newest recruit struggles to detach her arm from around the handle without touching the claw.
And fuck. Fuck! How did one get so far in?!
Ida has a pilum in her hand, ready to throw, but she’s hesitating. Mikaela is shrieking now and struggling too erratically. The shield sometimes covers the eurynomos. There’s no good time to aim. The closest legionnaires to Mikaela are hesitating too, scared by the eurynomos snarling at them, scared by the claws on its feet when it lashes out, too new and inexperienced and unconfident to see the weak points and attack around the claws.
You have to be shitting me. You got to be shitting me, Victoria thinks in a panic as she looks around for anyone to take her position. Melvin is nodding at her to go, already scooting a bit over to cover her station. And Victoria takes off without any niceties, knowing she’ll get there faster than Melvin still tanking the front lines with his shield while she’s with only her gladius.
But she’s not going to make it. She knows she’s not. She’s too far away. Mikaela is backing away on shaky knees, swinging her gladius without any coordination nor any real strength behind swings. Ida throws her spear, but it just barely grazes the eurynomos’s ear. The other legionnaires attack with weak strikes the eurynomos bats away rather easily.
Remember your fucking training! Victoria wants to cry, Your years of training!
But who is she kidding? They’re just kids, kids who never had the misfortune of losing a friend in battle. Castille is shoving his way out of the middle of the pack towards the danger. Nanako is swerving around from her position in the outer middle.
All of them, moving towards one similar goal and Matt is the first to make it, coming in from behind. He was primed for a stab from the back. It was so easy. The eurynomos is still struggling with the shield its claws are stuck in. In no situation, should Matt have struggled. But Mikaela — her foot, she kicks the shield. And the eurynomos falls backward flailing. Right on top of Matt.
“You okay?” Matt asks, holding out a hand with
───── ⋆⋅☆⋅⋆ ─────

A cut.
Just the smallest scratch from the eurynomos on the back of the hand, but Matt howls, his gladius dropping to the ground as he clutches his hand close to him, doubling over.
The eurynomos screeches in delight, yelling needlessly that this is it. It’s over.
Matt laughs, pained and wild, but still a laugh. His fist clenches, black veins spreading past his wrist and up his forearm steadily.
“You think I’m scared of dying? This is just how a battle is sometimes. I have no regrets,” Matt tells them, eye twitching erratically, as he picks his gladius back up, “I’m not scared. I’m not scared.”
They have to fight on. They can’t stop now.
───── ⋆⋅☆⋅⋆ ─────
59
“You better not die then,” Victoria says, sweeping the feet of a zombie before stabbing her gladius into his spinal cord. “It would be a serious shame to die here when the bakery is literally within grasp.”
“Not planning to,” Maki huffs with an eye roll.
───── ⋆⋅☆⋅⋆ ─────
60
“Get up, Mikaela. We’re leaving,” Ida orders, cold and controlled again.
“...No. I don’t want to.”
“That wasn’t a request.”
“I’m not leaving Victoria again to die.”
“I’m…I’m a legacy of Apollo. Maybe I could help you. Maybe — maybe— if you know any hymns. If You know know where they keep the nectar.
Victoria musters all her strength to gasp, “Ida needs you.”
“You need me more. Please. I…I don’t want you to die. Please tell me what to do. Please tell me how to save you.”

“Is this how it’s suppose to end? With us having accomplish nothing? With us leaving our friends to fend off another battle by themselves? I’m not okay with that. I’m not ready to leave yet. I don’t want to go.
Yeah. Yeah I have a final message I want to pass along. address it to those retired legionnaires who didn’t fought with us. Tell those lazy fucks that hid in New Rome that every single death are on them. Every single child slain, that’s on them. Every blood spilled, on them. Every friend they lost, on them.
They say it’s unfair. But So what? They say They completed their service. So what? They did their years. Who cares? They have a family. So do we. They have children. We have children in our ranks too. What makes their lives worth less than those in New Rome? They say they’re too old to be in battle. But we are too young yet here we are.”
───── ⋆⋅☆⋅⋆ ─────

“Hey,” she starts, “I thought Hermes was supposed to give the dead a coin for the ferry. So where’s mine? You took off so quickly. Just kidding.”
She plops down behind Travis, her back to him too.
“You don’t have to say anything. Just keep pretending you don’t see me. It actually makes this a lot easier for me.”
“I want to say thank you. For helping me in my final minutes. For sending Mikaela away so she doesn’t see me die. For fighting with us. For everything in general. Thank you. From the bottom of my heart, thank you. I wish I could repay you, but I can’t. Not when I’m like this.
So in return, you are free to take two, I quote two, of my plushies to share with your brother. Or my half-siblings. Whoever you deem worthy, I’ll be fine with it. I’m just kidding. You can take as much as you like. You deserve that much at least.”
They light the match onto the torch. Any second now, she’ll be gone.
Victoria closes her eyes and leans her head back to rest against Travis’s. She stares at the sky, so beautiful and vibrant with it’s setting sun. From her periphery, she sees them bringing the torch to the shrouds.
“Travis,” she breathes softly, lips curving into a smile. “I’m glad I met you. You’re a good person.”
They light the torches, and

She wonders if she can get away with staying quiet. She doesn’t do goodbyes. It has always been ‘see you tomorrow’ and ‘see you later’. It’s never been anything permanent.

“I won’t ask you to fight again if you don’t want to. I won’t ask you to save as many as you can. It’s not possible and it’s not fair for me to ask that. I just… I just wish… it wasn’t like this to begin with at all. I wish I hadn’t died. I wish I was stronger. I wish I lived. I wish I wasn’t a disappointment. I wish… I wish… I wish I could have done more. I wish I could have been more.”
An elbow brushed against hers, a head leaning back to rest against her crown.
“It’s not weak to wish you’d survive,” Travis mumbles, voice bleak and muted, “For what it’s worth, I wished you’d made it too.”
“I’m glad I met you, Travis. I wish I could have known you longer,” she mourns, not bothering to wipe the tears away anymore, watching the flames catch on the shrouds.
The last thing she hears before Camp Jupiter becomes the Underworld, before the alive and dead becomes the dead only, is a forlorned, wretched, “Yeah. Me too.”

He’s awful. He’s truly awful and acting entirely inappropriately for this situation. But he’s here with them, isn’t he? And that’s more than she can say for some others.
“Over my dead body!” she yells at his departing back, unable to help the smile.
“That’s bad luck,” Maki tells her.

For all her faults, for all the shit she says and has given over the years, for all the threats that've been thrown her way, she never had to take responsibility for anything.
Her gift does its best to make sure she never loses or embarrasses herself. A flash of a winning reality. A blink of corrective action. A second to veer the path to her success. All Victoria has to do is be fast enough to act accordingly and she’s always fast enough.
It feels like a law at this point. The goddess of victory, Victoria, will not and cannot have loser children unless it’s absolutely unavoidable.
“I’m having second thoughts about you pissing off Travis,” Matt admits, whispering close to her ear despite Travis being across the room with Maki at a claw game, having swindled his way to another $100 worth of credit (for free this time which is absolutely maddening. She wants to learn how to do that). Besides — with her, Matt and Melvin huddling like this in this tiny alcove for the restrooms — it’s anything but subtle. Anyone with a working brain cell will know what they’re talking about.
“Maybe you should apologize and pretend you like him,” Matt suggests.
Victoria considers it for a moment. For Matt to be saying this… he must be seeing something he can’t explain. But she’s not a quitter.
“Nope,” Victoria says, unable to stifle her excitement, “Too late for that. I’ve come too far to turn back now. Besides, I don’t pretend. It’s all or nothing with me. So buckle up, Matty-boy. Things are going to start being fun now. Melvin, have some nectar on hand in case this goes south.”
Melvin rolls his hands in front of him, glancing between them and Maki. “Maybe this is the day you’ll finally get your ass handed to you.”
Victoria grins. “Maybe. But if Jason and Ida couldn’t do it, I doubt someone like Travis can.”
It’s not like she doesn’t think she deserves it. She most definitely deserves a punch to the face at this point. But it just never happens. And she’s not masochistic enough to let a person have a free hit. Travis gotta earn it.
Melvin passes a tiny bit of ambrosia for her to keep as an emergency. “That’s because them putting you in your place would mean killing you.”
She raises an eyebrow. “And you think Travis doesn't have the capability or power to kill me?”
“I don’t know. I barely know him,” Matt admits. “He might have some dark rage hidden underneath all that laugh. I always feel like it's the goofy guys you have to watch out for. I mean, look at Percy. He’s so nice, but the way he fights? You don’t want him to be your enemy.”
Victoria studies Travis at the claw game. His posture is pretty relaxed despite Maki’s rigid stance and her side eyes back and forth between them. Gone is that aura of relaxation. His back is to them and he’s definitely playing (and still losing), swiping his card every now and then, but there’s no heart to it.
Travis Stoll doesn’t have the face of a killer nor an attitude of one or the hands of one. But that doesn’t mean much if he can pretend to be a loser so well.
“I think Travis can kill if pushed enough,” she settles on, limbering up with a few forward lunges and high knees.
Melvin pales and passes her more ambrosia. “Please don’t push him then.”
“Aren’t you curious though?” she says with a laugh, packing the extra ambrosia away into her pocket, “I want to see him mad personally.”
“No. Not really,” Melvin shakes his head, his nose scrunching in distaste. “And we should really be getting back. We’ve been chatting here long enough.”
“So? Travis is already annoyed at me. Why does it matter if he gets suspicious as well?”
Victoria follows Melvin out, Matt trailing behind her. But she sees double, of herself crouching to knee height. She does it out of reflex without questioning why. Not a second later, capsules the size of baseballs fell from the ceiling around them in a loose circle. They explode laterally rather than vertically, green goo like the stuff she used to see on Nickelodeon splatters all over Matt and Melvin from the waist up.
Victoria glances up to see Travis looking down at her with an unnerving smile. There’s calculations running through his face. Not shock, that she managed to dodge a prank that hits all angles so it doesn’t matter who walks through the door first, second, or last. Not surprise, that his trick failed. Just acceptance, like this is something he’s predicting.
But more importantly, when had Travis set that trap? What triggered it? Her eyes had been on him this whole time and not once had Travis left that claw machine so when? Did he bribed someone to set it up? Did he already have it set up before they came here? Maybe the capsules were mechanical and Travis was maneuvering them via RC and triggered their release with a button? But then why hadn’t Terminus done anything about this? Minor explosives are technically a weapon, aren’t they?
“Oh no,” Travis says with that careful smile in the fakest tone ever, “What happened? That sucks. I’m sorry, you guys.”
“It’s alright. Shit happens sometimes,” Melvin replies, but his eyes are on her and they’re definitely begging her to apologize.
And she smiles back in response, uncurling to stand again, hand on her hip as she tilts her chin up.
“Gotta try harder than that, shithead,” she challenges, much to Melvin’s disappointment.

As Melvin and Matt go to the restroom to clean up, this leaves her and Maki alone with Mr. Son of Hermes who’s aching to play some Billiards. In fact he’s pushing the two of them towards the pool table with extreme haste that’s in every way suspicious. Maki gives her a scowl that seems to say, “You owe a dozen croissants.” “We can play Cutthroat,” Travis says simply, throwing cash on the counter in front of the poor worker and snagging 3 cue sticks and the balls from behind the counter, “You guys know the game?” “Of course. Who do you take us for?” she shoots back as she chalks up her stick, “Who’s breaking?” “You don’t wanna?” Travis asks with a stilted grin as he plops the balls into place and removes the rack.

“You guys have an actual school?” Travis asks inquisitively, “An actual high school? And not just a room where you’re homeschooled?”
“Yeah. Of course. We have to be educated if we’re going to attend a university. As well as an elementary school and middle school. It’s for the families that established themselves in New Rome as well as any current legionnaire. The grades alternate between morning and afternoon classes so there would always be legionnaires available for sentry duties and other tasks,” Melvin explains succinctly, then horribly enough, he had to be nice and asks, “How does your camp handle schooling?”
Travis tells them what they already knew. That Camp Half Blood is a summer camp. Most of the inhabitants go to school back home. Those who are year rounders get an assessment test and then a customized schedule for the school year. A nice start time of 8 am that ends at 3:30 pm. Camp Jupiter? Those with evening classes wake up at the ass crack of 6 am because they have sentry rounds to do. Those with morning classes handle the nightly duties. It’s absolutely horrible for their sleeping schedule.
Then once classes end for the day for Camp Half Blood, they are free to do whatever they want — tackle the climbing wall, knit and crochet in the arts and crafts center, forge some new kickass weapon in the forge, train if they want but it’s not a necessity because they have Summer for that. Whatever they want. Which fucking sucks because at Camp Jupiter, once classes are done, it’s back to that grind of training and strengthening their formation and teamwork.
The more Travis talks, the more he paints Camp Half Blood as this all great, all amazing haven, the more angry Victoria gets.
It’s a lie.
It has to be a lie.
Every sanctuary has their dark secrets, their dark origin. Camp Jupiter has them, has plenty of them, enough to fill a sea of blood, so why not this Camp Half Blood too?

1000 ways, second cohort

Minors DNI please!
I got a new willvis idea after like months and it's more on the spicier side. I figured why not? Why shouldn't I? I already written the fluff, the angst, the whump, and now it's the lemon.
