i started writing original fiction because of a comment i got on a house md fic i wrote when i was 12 years old. someone said “this is out of character, house and wilson would never act like this.” so i thought, “if i make my own characters, no one can ever tell me they’re out of character, because i decide,” and i started planning my first novel. now i’m 23 and i’ve written 4 novel-length works, i have a degree in publishing and i work at a literary magazine, largely because someone insulted my house fanfiction. follow your dreams.
BITCHHHHHHH
It really annoys me when people say you can’t be a good writer if you don’t read.
Like, I’m a married mum of three under six with a full time job. Juggling work, home, kids and husband is hard enough. I barely have enough time or motivation to write as it is, let alone read a book. And you’re telling me that my talents as a writer won’t improve if I can’t find the time to pick up a book? That I can’t write well if I don’t read someone else’s words first?
Well, I call BS on that. January was the first time I sat down and properly read a book in a good couple of years. But it hasn’t negatively affected my writing ability at all. I haven’t gotten worse. In fact, I’ve improved. Through dedication and consistency and revision.
Practice makes perfect everyone. Don’t feel bad if you don’t read often. Don’t think your talents as a writer are diminished because you don’t have the time to pick up a book.
Everyone learns and grows differently.
Different things influence how we work and there are many factors which will improve our writing. Not just reading books.
So no. You don’t have to read often in order to become a better writer. It can help but your writing is not dependant on it.
The only thing your writing is dependant on, is you.

How I wanted the first lines of my story to be: serious, poetic, something to look back on and slap your forehead at because of the hidden foreshadowing
The actual first lines of my story:
10/10 would rather read a story with the second beginning.
Brilliant.
