[   I’ve been thinking about this for a couple of weeks and I’m going to archive Lola. It’s not just that she’s a difficult muse to get going during the best of circumstances, but when I was relistening to the soundtrack the most recent time, I realized that I had fallen out of love with the musical entirely. Not Lola per se, but.... everything else. I may bring her back at some point as a going concern, but it’s more likely that I’d bring her back as a guest muse on @hedwigsmuses. Thank you to everyone who made writing Lola for the past two years such an interesting experience. Hello, dear ones. Reminder: it does take a moment to get used to the perfection of a Price & Son shoe

    Now that was an question Minnie doesn’t even have to stress over, “Colorful!” She smiles, “every time y’see her she be wearin’ pink or a lil’ somethin’ with a sparkle~!” Of course, Jassy didn’t emerge from home head-to-toe in pink on the daily, other grand colors existed in her wardrobe But pink was her color. Hence why Minnie put down so much emphasis: it wasn’t like she wore tones that made her look all stuffy.

Lola made another flourished scribble; pleased that her woman on the street technique of gathering information was working just as well as a survey that Charlie wanted to blindly send out to people on the  i n t e r n e t.

“Would you buy this shoe?” Of course she wouldn’t buy this shoe! It was designed for a drag queen! It was moments like these that made Lola truly question whether Charlie got the basic conceit of what her designs were meant to do and who they were meant to appeal to. It certainly wasn’t going to be your average model buying at Saks Fifth Avenue, no matter how well they may have done at their showing at Milan.

  Eyelids stretch once more but not for the sake of being the prelude to yet another blink. Rather it shows wide-eyed intrigue in its most literal sense. “Oh! I would!” 

   Pause. A mean thought sweeps through her mind, a self-reminder that not everything has to be about her. And, all questions require just a lil’ more in terms of answers. Don’t you see the card? She asks herself, the card shows this moment’s importance.  “Umh! There this girl at work, Jasmine-“ Minnie begins, “She’d be wearin’ somethin’ like that too!” Everything pink – shining, glimmering, and splendid: Jazzy had to own.  

  Lola made a note in sprawling cursive handwriting on the back of the card as the woman spoke. It was the exact type of exuberant response she had been banking on when she set out. Enough positive feedback and she might actually be able to get this new line launched without the drama that had plagued the first line. Not that she didn’t love some good drama here and now, but it was best to keep it separate from business.

  On to the second question. “How would you describe this person?”

  Could Charlie have made these questions any more formulaic and boring?

    She blinks as thoughshe can’t believe her eyes. But with no second thought at all, she inches closer to the one who has called out forher attention. Minnie has seen a sort of scenario on television akin to this:where a big, important somebody approachesyou on the street for topics of utmost importance. Needless to say, Minnie ishappy this is not about politics. Or some mean ol’ prank but – fashion.    “Oh s’pretty!” While an appreciatorof green first and foremost, theburgundy and pink was particularly appealing. But this is all Minnie can say,not gifted in the art of deep praise –let alone critique. Her head tilts the slightest, “Izzit for sell~?”

   Lola smiled. Once again, Charlie showed that he knew asmuch about women’s shoes as he did about women. Even after their spectacular showing inMilan and apparently. unexpected.jump in sales after Lola’s contributions ( helped in no small part by drag having a sudden cultural moment ), Charlie stillwas reluctant to trust that maybeLola knew something about selling shoes that he didn’t.

    “Soon,”Lola said sweetly. And to humor Charlie, she took out from her bra the cue cardof questions he had asked her to at least entertain asking some of the women onthe street.

    “Nowwhat sort of person could you see wearing this shoe or purchasing it?”

“Excuse me, Miss?” Lola called out, waiving the woman over. Beside her, one of her Angels held a large posterboard, turned inward towards her body. Lola gestured and her assistant flipped around the drawing. A shoe. High heeled and tightly laced up to the drawing’s knee, drawn in a deep burgundy and highlighted with soft pinks.

“What do you think of this shoe?”

Due to unforeseen circumstances this muse is now on semi-hiatus and playable by request until May 2017 February 2017. I will be continuing existing threads (if there are any), but I will not be doing anything on this blog to solicit new reactions. You have to come to me if you want to write with this character.

For a few moments after they’d left the store and climbed into the car they managed to hail, (relatively quickly, too; Lola didn’t seem to struggle much with snagging them a ride as much as Zeta usually did when she tried to, herself) there was a bit of silence as they began to travel. Zeta was overcome with relief, after Lola finally said something, and then, with joy, at what she said.

“R-Really?! Wow! Thanks so much!” she beamed, a grateful and triumphant smile spreading across her face. She was so excited, she had to actively try to hold herself back from throwing her arms around Lola.

Lola’s words weren’t elated, gasping, positive words, dripping with awe at her talents, but it was so much more than she was expecting, and so much better than what she’d thought would be said to her after this; it was very moving and significant to her to hear, as well as the first semblance of praise she’d received in too long a time. “…O-Oh! Yes, of course,” Zeta said, quickly nodding, calming down a bit and returning to the reality she hadn’t truly won just yet. “But I already think you’ll like what you see.”

The confidence present in that statement was completely unfeigned, this time. That, and her determination, became more reinforced in her, just from this experience. “Better start making some space for me!” she warned with a laugh.

Lola raised a perfectly drawn eyebrow at Zeta’s suddenly bold comment. She wouldn’t have been surprised if one of her Angels has said something similar before their debut performance with the veteran drag queen, but from the oh-so-recently meek Zeta, it was rather unexpected.

“When we get back to the club, I’ll show you the shoes the girls wear for their performances along with some upcoming designs. I want you to show me an outfit that not only compliments the boots, but flatters their figures in a way that is transferable between two or more Angels,” Lola said, her voice warning that this would not be as easy of a task as it sounded.

It wasn’t that she didn’t like what Zeta had done thus far, but being able to come up with good things in concept was not the same as coming up with a good delivery. And she was after more than simply good. Especially now that she owned a controlling interest in both the club and Price and Simon shoes. Good wasn’t ever going to be good enough again.

That said, it would be exceptionally nice to have an in-house costume designer to help take some of the pressure off of herself and her multitalented Angels.

Zeta let go of the door as she followed Lola into the small, lackluster shack of a building. “Alright. I’m going to start to see what I can find,” she told Lola, and walked past her, a sincerely-determined expression on her pale, freckled face, as she began to browse the aisles–the organization of which left a great amount to be desired.

It wasn’t going to be an easy search, but it was important that she try her hardest to conquer it; finally, it seemed like her life would be more than what was held in the messages delivered through the voices of her parents from “the Lord,” supposedly.

After a while of looking and returning to shelves and areas where she’d already been, it began to seem more hopeless than anticipated.

But willfully weeding through the clutter (and hideous patterns that should probably never see the light of day and be permanently banned from existing), she found some very promising items: Vibrant, shiny fabrics, and donated articles of clothing for even more material in hand, she walked back up to the counter, trying her best to see past the pile.

Lola watched as Zeta attacked the barely organized rows of clothes in front of her. The sight was fascinating… at first. There was only so much she could take of watching someone else go through piles and piles of clothes. Eventually, she turned to her phone for amusement; returning emails for Price and Simon and setting up special events at the club.

She was surprised to see the amount of fabric Zeta had brought up for consideration. Perhaps it was a good day for charity shops. Or perhaps the girl just had bad taste.

Lola started parsing through the pile, setting some items in a small reject pile, but largely leaving the offerings intact. Wordlessly, she scooped up the ones she liked and took them back to the shopgirl staring at her phone. She paid in pound coins and motioned for Zeta to help her and the checker bag their new prizes.

Back in the cab with all of their new bounty safely secured in the trunk, Lola finally spoke. “That wasn’t bad,” she said, keeping her praise to a minimum just in case this was a fluke of nature that the girl had managed to salvage so many things from the racks. “But the real test is seeing what you do with all this fabric.”
