“Not when you put it like that.” Gwendolyn answered apologetically as she took one of the cookies that had been offered to her just moments before. “It’s nothing against you guys, I just…” Well, how could you sum it up without sounding ungrateful.
“I’m twenty-one. I’m not just your little girl anymore.” Oops. It came out sounding so much harsher than she had intended. These were adoptive parents. Gwendolyn had treated Jamie & billy with respect knowing that they were by no means obligated to take her in. Yet as time when by & they all settled into the idea of being a family. Her rebellion was bound to happen eventually. “Dad I…” She slumped in a defeated manner. It was out with the truth or she’d come across looking like a total brat. “I hate the snow.”
Jamie smiled to Billy and nodded, “Almost all ready.” she chuckled, looking toward Gwendolyn with a knowing looking. Her daughter needed to speak her mind to Billy, if she wanted to get her point across. Jamie was horrid at making decisions for her ( and Billy ), not wanting to get him upset. The ginger bit her lip, as she took a deep breath and watched both of them.
“She’s upset because –.” she began, before Gwendolyn spoke up. Jamie gasped to her words, looking at Billy to see his reaction. “ – she wants to stay here, love. I think she’s old enough.” It was strange, Gwendolyn was only a few years younger than her and still Jamie wasn’t used to being a mother ( even if it was just an adoptive one ). It was now, that the ginger finally spoke her mind about it. “She’s an adult y’know. I think – she should have a bit of freedom.”
“Well,” Billy sighed putting his arms around Jamie. “That’s just...Too bad.” He shrugged. “Because you’re going to New York with us, whether you like it or not. You may be an adult, but you’re still my daughter & if I want you with us for Christmas, that where you’ll be. No where else...And that’s final.”
It was rare that Billy ever spoke sternly to his Princess--rare that he ever needed to...but he needed to be a parent to Gwendolyn first & a friend second. Sometimes that meant looking like a jerk.
“Go to your room. Finish packing. I want you out here in twenty minutes. And I mean twenty minutes.”
