Bet On Me / Lance & Justin
@justin-caesar
âI bet you I can eat more pies than you in five mintues.â Lanceâs words came with a certain confidence that had not been there in the last couple of days. Since his bruises had gone, and his mind had eased, he had somewhat regained some of his confidence back â at least around those he was comfortale with. (And yes, this was to say that he was comfortable around Justin.)Â âI bet on my body and my soul.â
The pie eating contest was about to start soon, so Lance would soon have to make his words come to life â if Justin so took on the offer, that was. If Justin was game, Lance was willing to prove himself. A bashful smile came from him â as it so often was when it came to Justin â as he looked to the master of the ceremony calling for contestants. âWhat do you say? Dare challenge me?â
Truth be told, these things had always stressed Justin out. The town-wide events, the faires and festivals and other things that stretched themselves across Downsville and affected every last corner and crevice of it. Under its mask of festivities, the town was almost unrecognizable, and thus Justin always felt a little like he was in another world, and that he had to explore that world fully before it vanished; and if he didnât, heâd somehow failed. Failed what, exactly? He didnât quite know, himself. All he knew was that at the end of it, if he hadnât tried everything, he got this sense of disappointment and sadness in the pit of his gut, and he could only register it to one thing; failure. Right now, though, things were... different. To say the least. He was in another world, and the festivities that took place then and there were different to those Justin was otherwise used to; it seemed bigger somehow, grander, and it only stressed him out further. Thankfully, he had Lance there to distract him. Not that he told Lance how he felt -- he figured it was an unnecessary level of damper on what was obviously something Lance thoroughly enjoyed -- but the guy actually managed to be an incredible distraction all on his own. Justin didnât know if he only had to thank Lanceâs personality for that, or the very, very small warmth that had started to erupt in Justinâs heart whenever he looked at his best friend. A laugh escaped Justin as he gazed out over the designated area for the pie eating competition. He shook his head in amusement, thinking for a moment. âYouâre on,â he said instead with a nod, and turned to Lance, grinning excitedly; there was just the tiniest hint of a childishness across his grin. âBut letâs make it more interesting. You said you bet on your body and soul,â he began, and stepped closer to his friend, âso... how about the loser has to bet their body on some loser-style skinny dipping?âÂ
Addie couldnât help but laugh at his musings, nodding along. âYou know I never did either, but theyâre everywhere now!â she agreed in disbelief. âItâs like those boys are more important than all the politicians of this whole country or something.â she explained, then giggled at his question. âYou know youâre probably not the first person to wonder thatâŚmyself included.â she admitted with a smile. âBut arenât they like sixteen? Seventeen?â
âI know!â Justin said excitedly, glad to have someone share his point of view on the subject. âYou know, you could show me any picture of a politician in this wor--uh, country, and I wouldnât be able to say who it is but, okay, these guys? Harry, Lewis, uh, Nee-all, Liam, and Zayn, I know all their names.â He shook his head smiling, clearly amused. A laugh escaped him at her next comment, and he looked to the poster again, the better to study them and estimate their ages. He hadnât actually bothered to look their ages up, but they didnât at all look old. âThatâs what Iâd guess,â he said truthfully, and turned his smile back to the woman. âBut Iâd lie if I said I knew. I mean, they do look kind of... young, donât they? Not a single crinkle in their face anywhere!â
â⌠You prefer more than one direction?â Ryan spoke before he had finished talking, completely misinterpreting him. She caught sight of the poster and, figuring it out, laughed a bit. âOh! That British boy band. Always been more of a Beatles man, myself, if the categoryâs âBritish boy bandsâ. Although, I do âspose youâre right about them being attractive, and I wouldnât worry about the cradle-snatching, because a hoard of teenage girls would murder you before you got the chance to shake their hand, proper. Ah, Iâm babbling. Whoâre you?â
Justin blinked in confusion at the womanâs statement, and though he wouldnât exactly have said no to preferring more than one direction -- in terms of location, it got you to more than one places, and in terms of his own sexuality, he definitely preferred more than one direction -- a laugh nevertheless escaped him when she caught sight of the poster and corrected herself. âThe Beatles? Who are they?â he wondered, craning his neck and leaning forward a little. He had much, much more reading to do regarding this strange place, for so far One Direction was about one of the only things entertainment industry-wise that Justin had come to know about. âMurder me?â he chuckled, almost as if that bit of information seemed ludicrous at best. âWould they-- I mean, that seems a little... harsh.â He turned to the poster. âIâd just be shaking their hands!â Justin let out a chuckle and shook his head, though his smile faded a little at her question. âIâm, uh, Iâm Justin. Iâm... new to town. Just her for sch-- for academic purposes, just, you know... studying and... stuff,â he tried to chuckle, though to his horror it sounded a tad bit nervous.Â
Molly crossed her arms and looked up in the direction of the boy next to her.  She turned her attention back to the poster of the band on the wall, and eyed each of the men individually before shrugging.  âIt doesnât really matter to me that muchâŚbut whatever floats your boat?â
Half a smile appeared on Justinâs lips as the woman gave her verdict -- or rather, the levels of her investment in his thoughts -- and shrugged. âYeah, I mean, Iâm not like-- hung up on them or anything. I havenât even listened to them, to tell you the truth,â he smiled. âJust, you know... thought they seemed kind of cute. I understand all the hype, you know? Or some of it, at least.â
Angel stood back a bit from the man. His mouth slightly open as he stared off into the distance. Trying to recall what the hell a One Direction was. âWhat in the fuck are you going on about?â
âI--,â Justin stammered, pulled back to the reality of the fact that heâd started a conversation without any forethought -- and the reminder that it wasnât a very normal thing to do with strangers outside of Downsville. Or rather, in this new, weird version of Downsville, which wasnât Downsville Downsville -- and thus, Justin couldnât trust to just know strangers on the street. When he looked the guy over, however, he realized he did know something about him -- he immediately recognized the other as a fellow shapeshifter. Seeing as that wasnât part of the conversation at hand, though, Justin proceeded to gesture at the poster with a smile on his lips. âUh -- these guys. Apparently theyâre a big deal. And, like, I canât blame people, really. Theyâre kind of cute!â
Not knowing whether someone was speaking to her had never stopped Haneul Song. Not knowing whether conversation was directed in her direction had never stopped her from giving a piece of her mind, or from butting in to said conversations. Take now, for example. She didnât know if this man looking at a poster of five boys was talking to her, but, all the same, she had heard him, so she would take it as though he had directed the words at her. Haneul stopped in her tracks to look up close â really close â at the poster, before looking â not so closely â at the man who had spoken.
There were no words, just a confused look that would say this man was out of his mind.
But Haneul could never be kept at silence. So, after a pause, she looked back at the poster, pointed to one of the boys, and said, âThis one looks like a gnome.â
When the woman who had happened to be next to him stepped in really close to examine the poster, Justin took a step or two back to avoid coming into too close a proximity with her, to let her have her space that he wouldnât doubt she wanted and needed, but was just too busy (or polite) to request. The proximity did alert him to the fact that she was also a shapeshifter, though he kept quiet about that as she examined the old poster. Justin met her comment with a surprised silence -- he looked from the poster to the woman repeatedly, before a half-amused, half-surprised chuckle escaped him. âA gnome? No! I mean-- no, right? Gnomes have... Santa hats and long white beards, that guyâs just-- heâs just cute, you know? Like a...,â he paused, and took a closer look at the guy. Sure, he was cherub-y, but not... not a gnome, right? âLike a kitten!â
âYou know, I-- I never used to pay much attention to, uh, One Direction,â Justin said, scratching the back of his head as he looked at a faded poster for some kind of old release of theirs. It was a lie, of course, because heâd never had the possibility to pay much attention to One Direction before, since they hadnât existed where heâd come from. Only in the last week alone had he even gotten wind of both their existence and strange significance to this society as a whole. âBut now that I am, I gotta say... theyâre all quite attractive, arenât they? I dunno, would it be âcradle-snatchingâ?âÂ
obstacles / lance & justin
Though Justin no longer sprinted around yelling at people, he wasnât sure the shock of being where he was would ever disappear. At the back of his mind, at the center of his chest, and his his every joint an irritable panic existed, prickling just beneath the surface of it all, threatening to blow up at every turn of events in Justinâs life. In Justinâs new life. Whether it was because he hadnât yet seemed to entirely come to terms with what had happened, or because he had come to terms with what had happened, Justin himself couldnât even tell -- all he knew was that nothing felt real, and he wanted to be back home now more than ever. A couple of weeks ago he might not have been so hot on returning to Downsville to help his dad through a nasty divorce because of his own actions -- Justin didnât exactly fancy comforting his dadâs lover with whom heâd cheated on Justinâs mom with and who was now extremely upset about finding out about Justinâs dadâs marriage in the first place -- but now? With all that had happened within the last week alone? Justin would do anything to have that 30-something sobbing her mascara all over his shoulder again. Of course, there was some solace that had seemed to help immensely these last few days, and that was in Justinâs former best friend Lance. Shocking though it, too, had been to discover that Lance had ended up wherever Justin was now, and that this all wasnât some kind of twisted dream, seeing a familiar face had helped Justin completely lose his mind. Even if what Lance explained to him -- what little Lance seemed to know, himself -- made an ache appear in Justinâs gut, it was still nice to hear the words from someone he knew. Someone heâd known well, once upon a time. It meant that Justin wasnât alone, that he didnât have to go through this alone. Then again, heâd started to suspect maybe Lance would prefer it that way. Or, rather, thatâs what Justin thought Lance would prefer by now -- heâd asked him so many questions, asked him to hang out so many times, Justin was sure the other man had started to grow tired of him, although just wouldnât come clean about it out of... pity, maybe? They hadnât ended on the best of terms all those years ago, and though Justin assumed Lance had since long gotten over what heâd felt for him, it was still a sensitive subject; so Justin wouldnât have blamed Lance had he come clean about it, in any case. But... Lance was the only person Justin knew, and the only person he felt calmed him down even a little. He hated how selfish it made him, but he had to keep Lance around now and again somehow, even if just for a moment. Like at that moment, right then and there, as they walked leisurely down main street through town. âThanks again for... hanging out with me,â said Justin a little sheepishly, his thoughts having boiled up some guilt in his stomach. âI hate to be dragging you around so much and all, I just-- this is all so fucking crazy,â he said, and laughed in disbelief, shaking his head. The fact that he was currently homeless was certainly a crazy thing, for example. Luckily heâd come upon employment and now spent his nights in the shop without the owner knowing, so it made it all the easy for him to lie and say heâd found a place. âDid you... have you gotten over the shock, yet?â Justin asked tentatively, almost hopefully. {@lancealton}
âFolks always leave the best trinkets just lyinâ around.â
            The brunette bent over to pluck the meticulously crafted paper dragon from the trampled dirt, admiring the little toy despite the scuffed footprints that otherwise tattered it â- there couldâve been extra damage, but the crescent moon that hung in the sky gave little vantage illumination for the girl to properly gauge the state of the dragon, anyway. Still, it wasnât often one came across one of these curious little things on a midnight walk, was it?
      Gleefully turning the toy over in her hands, Fern murmured to nobody in particular, or perhaps anybody who existed in the night, âFinders keepers, I reckon.â
The sound of someoneâs voice almost startled Justin straight out of his own skin; he jumped back as if the girl had lashed out at him, though quickly ran a hand smoothly down his own stomach in an attempt to calm himself down. It took him a moment of blinking and staring until his brain caught up with what sheâd said and what she was doing, and when it did, Justin gave her a small, friendly smile. âYou donât think anyoneâll be back to claim it?â
âIâm afraid that weâre about to close shop.â
Wiping down the last of the counters, Nakoa was anxiously glancing at the clock that always seemed to tick by too slowly. Why did time move so slowly tonight? He was eager to go home. It was already past his daughterâs bedtime, so of course that meant heâd missed their nightly ritual. In the morning, sheâd be pissed. The man repressed a sigh, and then glanced at the customer that kept him here. âSo, uh, what can I do for you?â
While his first paycheck wasnât big enough to get him much closer to an apartment -- or any place to stay, really -- it was enough to buy Justin some much needed items for his comfort and survival. Mainly food, though, since that was the most dire thing he seemed to lack, as of now. Food and water. Water. Justin could practically feel the salt-water scent burn through his nose; heâd do anything at that moment to go for a swim in the ocean. He couldnât, of course. He needed to acquire some food and liquid before it was too late, if it wasnât too late already. Besides, these little tasks of survivalism -- using his first paycheck to acquire sustenance, every day finding somewhere he could spend the night -- they kept the panic at bay. The panic that still hadnât entirely gone away, the panic that always seemed to lurk somewhere in his chest. The panic he didnât know would ever go away, unless he got away from this... whatever kind of reality this was. No -- things had to work out. Sooner or later, things would go back to the way they used to be, and all Justin considered lost would be returned. It had to be so. When the man called out that the shop was about to close, Justin hesitated on the threshold, torn between anxiety and need. He didnât want to be rude, but... he needed some kind of preservable sustenance. âUm...,â he hesitated, and looked around. âI just kinda need, like... canned food or something like it. But itâs cool, you donât have to go out of your way if youâre closing.â Never mind the painful gnawing Justinâs stomach was doing to itself.Â
