Ariana Miyamoto, The First Black Miss Universe Japan 2015
Miyamoto says she entered the competition after a mixed race friend committed suicide because of the teasing she received. So the backlash she’s received is nothing new and will fuel her fight to end racial prejudice.
“I was prepared for the criticism. I’d be lying to say it didn’t hurt at all. I’m Japanese — I stand up and bow when I answer the phone. But that criticism did give me extra motivation,” she told AFP in an interview.
“I didn’t feel any added pressure because the reason I took part in the pageant was my friend’s death. My goal was to raise awareness of racial discrimination,” added Miyamoto, who was bullied as a schoolgirl growing up in the port town of Sasebo, near Nagasaki.
“Now I have a great platform to deliver that message as the first Black Miss Universe Japan. It’s always hard to be the first, so in that respect what Naomi Campbell did was really amazing.”
“I used to get bullied as a kid but I’ve got mentally stronger, to protect myself,” said the model.
“When I was small I stood out and always felt I had to fit in with everyone. I’d try not to bring attention to myself, but now I say what I feel. I do things my own way.”
“I want to start a revolution,” Miyamoto added with a laugh. “I can’t change things overnight but in 100-200 years there will be very few pure Japanese left, so we have to start changing the way we think.”

From sinner to saint!
I can’t even decide on which passage I love best and I’m not even halfway through the book! The author, Kevin Roose t some point in the book writes about some awkward times with a particular Bible professor called Dr. Thompson. Dr. Thompson during his class sometimes took the bible very literally and asked question like ‘why Adam ad Eve didn’t have belly buttons?” and in efforts to keep the students awake would try to use teen lingo in his speech by stating that went Jesus went to the well for some water he was met there there by a ‘ho’ instead of (loose woman).
Honestly, so far there isn’t anything i’ve read that I don’t like. The author is writing honestly, without prejudice or pre-judgment he is just stating his perceptions of the events occurring around him and I find it hilarious at least from my perspective and I’m Christian so I might most likely be offended by any negative things he says about my faith. There were things he said even that caught me off guard. I never knew that the chapter in the bile ‘Philippians’ could be mispronounced. i thought it had a standard pronunciation and everyone said it like “Phili-Pee-Yuhns” but apparently the author Mr. Roose made the mistake of pronouncing it “Phili-Pie-Yuhns”.
It just made me realize how much of a different upbringing I had since I grew up in a Christian home and he did not. It made me understand why I sometimes take for granted how hard it is to accept reasons such as the claims made by the Bible for a non-religious person because of how they were brought up. They might have never even heard of a God how much more believing all these sayings about Him. It helps me better understand how difficult it is for other people to accept Christianity or any religion in general when they’ve never had to live with the notion that God exists. I’m deeply enjoying this book and can’t get enough of it. Ideally I would have been done by now but other commitments have been taking my time. I’m not worried though because I feel like that’s also a good thing because good books are hard to find these days so anything I can do to make this book last I probably would.
