Some work I was getting up to for my latest Photoshop assignment. This was an assignment to cut out the person in these headshots and impose it on a background image. We were also challenged to do some editing to the image itself. With the first image most people in class chose to make him look as badass as possible, I took this to try and do the opposite, make him as lovable as possible.
In the second image I first used the background image and changed the lighting of her face to quite blue, when I did this a couple people seeing my progress said she looked like she had blue skin like in Avatar, I took this as a challenge and went to town.
One Wave Festival - Victoria BC
A couple weeks ago I attended a great Festival in Victoria. "One Wave Festival" presented by the Pacific Peoples Partnership is a one day festival celebrates local first nations dance, and raises money for a variety of foundations.
I designed some signs for the "Zero Waste Stations" around the festival and I think they turned our pretty well. I used a flat design approach, trying to keep them as simple and functional as possible. The recyclables and the zero waste station signs feature art from local artist, Mark Gaudi.
I attended representing the suspended life and did I draw to win a free hammock preorder in a custom color combination.
I also helped my friend Marc setup the central art installation of the festival "The Tetrahedron". This is a 15+ foot tall work of art is truly a marvel to see. It was assembled in a matter of about 3 hours (timelapse to be posted soon).
The festival featured some really talented artists and local charities and many vendors. I had a great time and will totally go back in years to come. Thanks to everyone who made it happen.
One more snapshot of some of the work I've been completing during my summer's internship with Canada Mats. This was a project I started on monday and have been slowly chipping away at. The company recently became the exclusive Canadian supplier of heated walkway matting, so the purpose of this inforgraphic was to educate people on the costs of clearing snow compared to the costs of purchasing and running heated mats.
For the blog that goes along with it visit Canadamats.com/blog
Screenshot from my day at work today, Designing and making a technical proof for the factory of a new entrance mat. This is alot of what I do at work these days.
One Question...
Over this last weekend I was introduced to a new question I've been asking to people i am meeting and old friends. It catches people off guard and usually stops them in their tracks and makes them think. I was first asked this question by a girl I met the first night of Shambhala Music Festival in Salmo, BC.
Unfortunately I can't remember her name, but I met her while drinking some water in the garden area at the center of shambhala's downtown area. I started chatting with her and some of her friends and she asked me. "okay, really quick" she said with a sudden seriousness, "What are you best at?". I looked at her and thought... I don't think anyone has ever asked me a question like that.
"ummmm... I'm not sure".
"Come on, come on. Just the first thing you think of!" she told me as i searched my brain for an answer.
"I would have to say, Snowboarding." I finally came to the conclusion of "Its probably the activity I've put the most time and energy towards in my life".
"Thats awesome!" she exclaimed "I've been asking people that since I got here and its a great way to learn more about people!"
So we talked about how I got into snowboarding and why and how I always snowboard with my Dad and best friends. It really did start an awesome conversation! So I adopted it and started asking people I talked to over the weekend.
"What are you best at?"
Try it some time, it will stop people in their tracks. I asked quite a few people and most people answer completely different, for most people they think a little deeper. One person told me "making my friends smile", great answer! One person told me "taking care of my wife and kids" another great answer.
Another variation I eventually started was asking who they were with about their friends "what is he best at?" then you really get to see how that person sees the other person and it takes them off the spot of having to answer. Then you reverse it... "okay, what is she best at" I don't think I ever heard the same answer twice of all the people I asked.
Now, I want to know, can this question be asked in regular life? Does it only work at a hippy enfused, dream-like environment of a place like Shambhala Music Festival? I asked an old friend this morning, and he said he would have to get back to me. He said "noone has ever asked me that".
So there's the challenge, I'm going to do it and I would love to here anyone's results. Ask someone you know, or someone you just met. "What are you best at?" see what they say. You might learn something about that person you never knew. Then switch it up the next time and ask a friend about their significant other, "what is he/she best at?" I guarantee you if nothing else it makes them stop and think.
Every year I take something away from Shambhala, and if this year this is what I got, I'm okay with that.
Thanks for listening

This is a video my group produced for a school project highlighting group member, Jesse Wood's brand: Skine. I completed all the typography for the video. I also created some of the effects and assisted with others. I worked with the team when shooting in studio to set up lighting, camera angles and audio capturing.
Typography Tuesday!
This is an Infographic I made for my current Intern position. It details statistics about slip fall injury rates. This is to advertise the importance of proper matting in the workplace.
Had a typography project all planned out for today, but planned out and completed became 2 different things when it comes to the time taken for a decent kinetic typography project time is a luxury I don't seem to have much of these days. So this is an older project I did, but hey still counts cause I haven't posted it here.
getting prepped for Typography tuesday.. this one might take some work. But #enjoyingit
Ever since I saw the Lego Movie I've had this song in my head. Its an easy one to get looping in your head, its just so damn happy! Anyways, didn't have the same amount of time to spend on it as last week, but just something to keep me busy.
This was a project I completed for my visual effects class. This was to show my comfort level working with 3d environments within After Effects.
Its Typography Tuesday! message me for suggestions for typography projects... enjoy!
Typography Tuesday!
Created a little something for my fist item for a weekly feature I am planning over the sumer: Typography Tuesday, Each week I will try to produce some sort of project pertaining to using type in different ways.
I also created an animated gif of this which was an interesting learning experience. I could not get it to post on tumblr as it is quite large, but check it out here.
Let me know what you think or give me some suggestions for famous quotes you would like me to do!
