God bless America. A three word phrase that has been burned into the mental lexicon of every boy, girl and other
raised in our wonderful red, mostly white and blue land. From sea to shining sea we sing of God's blessings. Of late, at the seventh inning stretch at Major League Baseball games and during pregame festivities of NFL games. We pray, we shout and we sing God Bless America rather often. We know we are blessed. So much so, we more often than not, forget how blessed we as a nation really are. Those who frequent church pray and thank their God for their blessings and afterward complain about the economy while choking down fried chicken prepared by someone who had to work on thier Sabbath day. Trying to decide which remote control to use to turn up the volume because they can't hear the TV over the volume of screaming kids, still dressed in their church clothes, fighting over the video game controller. Not that they don't have three or four of them, this game is a one player game. Wait a second Atheists. I see you snickering there. Don't worry. You're next. Why? Atheists don't believe in God. Any God. So they are above such nonsense. Bitch, please. You don't say it. You may not even sing it. But, Honey, you're doing exactly the same things on the same days. Here's the TV remote.
Whether you are into it or not, our country is blessed. Believers will say it's because of their God's love. Atheists will say it's dumb luck. And there the argument begins and ends.
Who cares??
I'll say that again. Who cares??
In America there are starving people. In America we experience disasters both natural and man made. In America we kill each other. In startling numbers, I might add, and with incredible efficiancy. We can sit, bitch, piss and moan, but the reality is very little of our time and energy goes into prevention and assistance. Why?? Some will say we are blessed and that God will help the unfortunate. Some others will say, I have worked hard for what I have. There is a government agency to take care of that. The guilt is shared by just about all of us.
If you are a believer, I'm not asking for your prayers. If you're an Atheist, I'm not asking for your money. I'm asking you to share the blessings we in America have with everyone else here at home. I'm not asking Liberals to bed down with Conservatives, because in some instances, that would be gross. I'm asking people, all people, to look all other people in the eye and ask,
"What can I do to help you?"
Sometimes it will be a meal. Sometimes it will be a place to sleep. But ninty percent of the time the help they will be seeking is just understanding. Understanding of who they are as people. People different from yourself, but people none the less.
Yes, God has blessed America. But it's wealth and bounty are just things. Try this one on for size. God blessed America to teach Humility and Humanity. It's a hard lesson when you got all the chips. And Atheists, we got incredibly lucky in America being saddled with all this wonderful stuff. Wouldn't it be great if we could take a moment to share some stuff and alot of ourselves to make our place really better?
There you have it folks. It's easy. Listen to people and don't be afraid to ask if they need you to listen. And when you got alot, help out someone in need. Don't just throw pocket change, but give of yourself and what you have.
Simple shit. Well, I'll get off my soap box now.
Be good to each other. Listen to each other. Love one another. It's just that easy.
Peace.
