“I’ll be one of the many saying...
...you made us so proud!”
Ever since Miss Americana came out last Friday I’ve watched it several times and every single time, I cry, laugh and feel an overwhelming amount of pride.
As someone who’s always been wired to be a “good girl” myself, watching Miss Americana hit strangely close to home.
Seeing some parallels between the lessons I’ve learned in my twenties and Taylor’s life as she comes to terms with the fact it’s impossible to please everyone and remain likeable at the same time.
Did I twist myself into a pretzel trying to accomplish it anyway? Check! ☑️
Or being extremely hard on yourself when you don’t get that pat on the back you deemed essential, to feel like you belong. Vowing to work even harder and be even better next time around.
Did I constantly question my own abilities and wonder if “they see right through me”? ☑️ ☑️
Not to mention that putting the key to your happiness in the hands of strangers is extremely reckless and detrimental to your mental health..
Did I suffer from anxiety for most of my adult life, caused by all of the above? ☑️☑️☑️
These lessons were such a formative influence in my early to mid-20’s. Having cursed my “good girl” attitude, blaming it for all the heart-ache and unhappiness I felt. I closed off my heart for a while and soon realised this wasn’t working either. I had to change the channels in my brain and honestly, sometimes it’s still a struggle to unlearn these ingrained, toxic thoughts. But I’m getting there...it’s simply part of growing up.
So seeing Taylor staying true to herself in the midst of chaos, finding strength and love between the remnants of a belief system that we both had shared and that almost took us down. She reminded this “good girl” that being good is not a weakness. It can even be something I am proud of.
As long as I keep my pen sharp, my skin thin and my heart open♥️
