hey if any if you want to donate cases of bottled water to residents in flint, send them to:
Triumph Church 1657 Broadway Blvd. Flint, MI 48506
omg please do, they canāt even bathe without getting rashes, let alone drink water. this hits too close to home
If you canāt afford to or donāt care to ship water, there are other ways you can help! You can donate money to the Flint Water FundĀ so they can purchase water or filters, or to the Flint Child Health & Development Fund to directly help kids affected by the lead. If you donāt have money, sign this petition to stop making Flint residents pay astronomical rates for unusable water. Water bills average $140 a month in Flint, and the city is trying to force them to pay, beginning with shutting off water, but since thatās not much of a punishment, I imagine theyāll end up sending people to collections for unpaid bills.
Other places to send money, water, or filters include:
Small Amounts/Money
Catholic Charities Center for Hope 517 E. Fifth Ave. Flint, MI 48503 Monday ā Friday, 9am ā 4pm 810-232-9950
The American Red Cross 1401 S. Grand Traverse Flint, MI 48503 Saturday and Sunday, 9am ā 4pm 810-232-1401
100 cases or more:
Food Bank of Eastern Michigan 2300 Lapeer Rd Flint, MI 48503 Call ahead to 810-239-4441
Truckloads:
United Way Emergency Center 111 E. Court St. Flint, MI 48502 Call ahead to 810-232-8121

The women of TFA
so i was wondering where rey learned to understand binary (the language of astromech droids) because sheās a lone scavenger living on a desert planet and i was thinking that mabe sometime in the course of her star destroyer spelunking adventures, letās say sheās 14 years old; she finds part of an astromech droid thatās still functioning just enough to talk. so she decide not to trade it to untar platt for portions and takes it home instead, cleans it up. hooks it up to an old comm screen so she can see what itās saying while sheās still learning all its beeps and whistles. and then at the end of a long day, when she gets home, she scrubs the sand off her face, pours the sand out of her boots, and just sits and talks to her barely-functioning astromech droid, whose knowledge is thirty years old: coruscant, the seat of the empire (what empire?) updates on the construction of the death star. bounty notices for han solo, smuggler. the imperial senate, disbanded (but what about the new senate?)Ā
the hot, dry air of jakku, making mirages of old memories just outside the shell of her AT-AT. the desert so quiet that you can hear sand sliding down the dunes, in soft silky layers. rey, scraping crumbs off her plate with her fingertips, pressing her droid with more questions. whatās naboo? whatās a forest? how big is a forest? whatās a tree? how many trees are there? (no one else tells her about these things. no one else talks to her.) the droids go everywhere, she realizes. they see everything and keep everything, scavengers of memory and information, of events and people and ideas. she learns binary until she gets good enough to detach the comm screen and just listen; during the day she quietly practices binary to herself, whistling each beep and tone as she hikes the dunes to the star destroyers, her calves aching. when she gets home, the droid greets her with a happy beep. for a few months, it feels nice, strange, hopeful. it feels odd to have someone waiting for her. refreshing, almost.Ā
and then one day rey comes home and the astromech droid doesnāt beep, no whistle of greeting. the light in its glassy round eye is dark.Ā the fuel cells are dead. her heart sinks. she searches the star destroyer endlessly for another working fuel cell, tries to trade for them at nima outpost, but to no avail: the model is too old, any fuel cells that could work are all being used for other things. that night she wears her x-wing helmet and sniffs, watching the stars, wrestling with hope and despair in equal measure; in the morning she drags the droid to untar platt and trades its parts for twelve portions. the first portion is bitter and tasteless, more so than usual, but itās alright, rey thinks. her friend even fed her.
Ā and now she talks to all the astromech droids that pass through nima outpost. they donāt mind talking to her. theyāre happy to tell her how hyperdrives work, what a compressor does, how to fix an acceleration compensator. and every time she hopes that maybe, the droid will end up on a distant planet somewhere else, and itāll mention a girl on jakku, a girl who polished its casing and oiled its hinges, a girl whoās been waiting for a long time, and someone will look up with a twinge of recognition and realizeĀ itās time to go back. itās time for her to come home⦠it never happens. but rey tries anyway, because the droids go everywhere, see everything, meet everyone⦠she stays, and waits.Ā
Space: the final frontier. These are the voyages of the starship Enterprise. Her ongoing mission: to explore strange new worlds, to seek out new life-forms and new civilizations; to boldly go where no one has gone before.
I would like to promote a literary theory I have that stands aside fromĀ āRochester was doing the best he could for Berthaā orĀ āRochester was trying to indirectly murder Berthaā, which is:Ā āRochester sincerely believed that if he ignored his problems, they would go away.ā
How comforting for the woman who got locked away in an attic by a rich white dude who used his privilege to run roughshod over her humanity.
Itās one thing to ignore your problems when the consequences affect only you. Itās quite another when not only is that āproblemā a living, breathing, very ill human being, but also the consequences of pretending she doesnāt exist have a direct or indirect negative &/or life-threatening impact on her and everyone else around you.
happy Easter 2 me Jesus has risen and I truly feel His presence God bless
Deanna Troi was a poorly written character and Marina Sirtis was an even worse actress.
I admit that the writers could have done more w/ Deanna b/c the TNG writers were notoriously sexist but Deanna Troi is a great character and I adore Marina Sirtis and also why are you trying to ruin my fun I mean damn
I donāt think that the TNG writers were notoriously sexist. Look at Dr. Crusher. She had a strong presence aboard the Enterprise whenever she stepped on the scene. She confidently clashed with Cpt Picard many times and never worried about anything besides the good work that she did. However, Mz. Sirtasās acting style was extremely bland. She was half human and half betazoid but she showed less personality than her betazoid mother and any human (besides Denise Crosby playing the super half-assed Tasha-Yar). Ā Ā
You do know that Gates McFadden was literally fired because she spoke out against sexism pertaining to her character, right?
Denise Crosby left the show because they gave her hardly anything to say
Marina Sirtis was constantly objectified and told she was too fat to wear the normal uniform and was only allowed to wear it when she lost weight
And Iām not denying that Star Trek has had great female characters but they were certainly not treated as well as the male characters nor were they given enough to do
Were NOT sexiest?!?! You are joking me.
Marina talked about how she was on a constant diet to fit into those insane outfits, which had spandex in them anyway.
Those scenes where she eats chocolate, they would give her a bucket to spit the chocolate out. On top, they would give her milk chocolate because she doesnāt like that and so she wouldnāt want to eat it without feeling sick, so just spit it out into a bucket. All so she could fit into her outfits.Ā
Also the amount of times I have watched and worked on a TNG episode and note how the men are eating, but not the women is shocking.Ā
One of her favourite episodes is a Fistful of Dataās because she didnāt have to wear one of those outfits.
Gates stood up for her character. She played a single mother yet she NEVER got credit for raising a child as smart as Wesley. It was always the men. She stood up for herself, her character and single women who donāt get credit everywhere. And her payment was to be fired. You can see her talk about this at many comic cons with Marina.
She was lucky that EVERYONE just rebelled against that and she was brought back. But too this day she hasnāt watched series 2 of TNG. And can you blame her? She asks for more depth and she just gets fired. Well you know, good on her for doing it! She deserved to be heard.Ā
Denise. Well. Letās be honest, I see where Denise was coming from. She did deserve more. Tasha was barley given the chance to grow, barely any words. She deserved more than to be remembered as the lady who shagged Data. She was head of security and she saved the men more than once in the few episodes she was in. She stood up, and she left. Have you seen code of honor?! Johnathon Frakes has called out what shit that is at Comic Cons defending Denise.
The fact that ALL the women of Star Trek (yes, ALL OF THEM. In EVERY series has dealt with this shit) managed to act and slay in outfits where they couldnt breath (some have literally passed out from these outfits or been left crying because they hurt them so bad) is nothing short of amazing.
I mean heck. Marina has had to deal with Deanna being sexually assaulted TWICE for plot development (which she has spoken about and how it was the hardest thing she had to do in Star Trek).Ā
You can not say that TNG did not suffer with sexiest writers. In fact, you canāt say Star Trek on the whole hasnāt suffered with them. It is well noted how bad it has been. All the Star Trek actors spoke about it.Ā
You can not like their acting, thatās fine and completely fine everyone enjoys different things, but you will damn respect them as women in this industry who have stood up for themselves and note the complete shit they have had to deal with.Ā
Also while I am bloody at it. The amount of women SHITTED on in acting for having bland characters or whatever is stupid.
Have you ever thought that maybe, if they were given decent story lines this wouldnāt happen?! Perhaps if the writers actually cared about these women beyond their breast and hips size, we would of gotten better story arcs?Ā
Note how Marina said when she was given a proper Starfleet uniform suddenly she could solve problems which Data and Geordi couldnāt even do?!
Maybe if Denise was given a chance she could have worked like the champ she is (she has worked on Gates theater stage) that perhaps she could of given more?Ā
Actors are as good as the material they are given.
I will never not reblog a stirring defense and acclamation of Star Trek women, particularly Marina Sirtis.
Fun fact: in the Robin Hood episode Troi and Crusher were the only characters that did not sword fight (they had vases to smash over peopleās heads instead) DESPITE the fact that Marina Sirtis and Gates McFadden were the only cast members who could fucking fence.
^THIS^ Out of the three people in the main cast who were trained in fencing, (Patrick Stewart, Marina Sirtis, and Gates McFadden) two of them were relegated to smashing pots over peopleās heads while the other (untrained) men fought with real weapons. It is impossible to see that and say that sexism had nothing to do with it.
Also, with regard to āā¦and Marina Sirtis was an even worse actress,ā I completely disagree. In my opinion, Marina was the one who had to deal with the most poorly written scripts, and yet, sometimes she made those terrible episodes better than they had any right to be, simply through her acting ability. Did the scripts still suck? Yes. But that wasnāt her fault.Ā
I think that Marina deserves all the acting awards because she went to work every day facing constant scrutiny of her appearance, endless objectification, and zero respect for both her character and herself. She never once got an acting noteāIN SEVEN YEARS OF FILMINGāwhich says a lot about how much the producers were paying attention; they gave her scenes a once-over to make sure she looked sexy enough to keep peopleās eyes on her and moved on. Marina knew that the only thing the producers cared about was her appearance, and there was nothing she could do about it for fear of getting fired, seeing as they actually did fire Gates McFadden for pointing out sexism in the scripts.Ā
Sexism had everything to do with Deanna Troiās character being what it was. Marinaās acting was notĀ ābland;ā she was simply doing whatĀ the writers and presumably the directors told her to do. When she was actually given interesting material to work with (Face of the Enemy comes to mind) I think she was brilliant.

The List App is ruining my life, & [Moss voice] Iām loving it.
was i your love was i a statue of all of the bridges i burnt down
This really confirms everything Iāve ever suspected about pigeons.
Itās National Coming Out Day and Iāve been thinking about my younger self. How terrified I was the first time I fell in love with a woman. I was attending a Catholic college, playing basketball for the Lady Monks. (No joke). Many of my college professors were monks and nuns. I was studying creative writing and I spent the entirety of my last two years writing poems about masks and hiding. I could have graduated with a degree in How To Leave Pronouns Out Of A Love Poem.
Last spring, on tour, a friend told me that Nina Simone spent several years during the Civil Rights Movement refusing to sing love songs, refusing to sing anything but songs for justice and change. When I heard that I felt so charged and inspired. How fierce. How powerful. How unrentlessly committed. That night, before I got on stage, I had the thought that I wasnāt going to read a single soft or sweet poem. I decided I was going to read only social justice poetry through my entire set. But when I was making my set list it hit me that the simple existence of the word āsheā in my love poem, made it a political poem. Isnāt that insane? (And Iām not using the word āinsaneā flippantly) Isnāt it insane that love is a political thing? That the heart is a political thing?
This morning I was hiking around Colorado and this heart leaf fell at my feet. If you are someone who has come out or has not come out I hope wherever you are today a leaf like this finds its way to your path. Thank you for being here. Thank you for existing. May you always fall and fall and fall for whatever your brave heart loves.
