The Voice Within || Joey & Jay
@icarusjaybird
District X had a few quiet spots in the park, allowing Joey to settle next to a tree. With his blanket settled over a dry patch of grass, he sat cross-legged, shifting his guitar against his lap. One hand smoothed across the rigid edges of the wooden neck. He stopped midway to cast a gaze at the engraving of his name, left on there since he was a teenager, coaxing a slight smile.Â
He turned his focus towards the pegs, adjusting them while strumming a few bars to find the pitch. The afternoon sunlight sneaked through the leaves, right above where he was sitting. At least he neednât worry about finding good lighting, thinking of times when he wished he could have performed with an audience.
But no dice, they say. Life had reared its permanent mark on his voice. No one would ever hear it. They would have to have to listen closely to the strums of his guitar to find his words.

Conner shifted his weight and fidgeted slightly. âYeah⊠I heard about what happened with everything involving the Joker and NOVA⊠what he did to my family; to Bruce and his familyâŠâ The hybrid shook his head slowly. Fists balled themselves. Thinking about everything that had happened while he was away only made him angry. He should have been there.
He gave a small nod at the mention of paying rent. It was such a mundane part of their lives. âI had a mechanics shop the last time I was in the City⊠but, I decided not to open it back up or anything like that. It took too much of my focus away from being out and about in the City - patrol and everything. Easier to focus on just one.â He explained dryly.Â
âHelps though when one of your fathers set you up with a⊠ridiculous expense account.â Conner scoffed some. The amount of money that people like the Waynes, the Kanes, and the Luthors had made his head spin. He blinked suddenly and looked more directly at his old friend. âYou⊠can just ask me if you need any help or anything. Thereâs more than enough there.â The offer came out awkwardly-toned.Â
News of Bruceâs death echoed a collective of various feelings. Indeed, death by such circumstances were cruel and unjust. He knew the feeling all too well. His lips fought back a grimace at the nagging memory that peered from the back of his mind. âThereâs not a word strong enough to describe that manâs actions,â said Joey, shaking his head, âdare anyone call him that.â
While months had passed since the incident, he could only imagine the memories were still fresh for those who were greatly affected. An soft affirmative hum followed. He tucked his hands in his pockets, mustering a reassuring half-grin at the otherâs awkward demeanor.Â
âIâm doing fine in regards to finances. My pop isnât the type to let any of us struggle to make endâs meet. Frankly, Iâm more surprised with how heâs talked to me as of late.âÂ

This is a surprise, not expecting Joey to have met up with Daken at all. Especially not with hoe much they donât get along but sometimes life has a funny way of throwing things your way that you wouldnât expect. His hand pulls back, concerned for how the interaction went. âYou tossed him against the wall?â He doesnât know why thatâs his first comment about the whole situation but alas, Grant asked of that anyway. He shakes his head for a moment, reflecting on what his little brother just told him.
âDaken was going to apologize? Iâm wondering if he changed his mind since I havenât heard from him ⊠â Grant is curious but the thought of the other man considering it makes his heart beat faster. He knows that it would be dangerous to get his hopes up for anything good to come out of this information. âIâm not mad at you. You were doing what you think is right. Youâre protective after losing me once. I get that. Anyone should understand that feeling. I think if he has something to say then we should let him.â
His guilty blue eyed gaze watched his brother remove his hand from his shoulder. A quiet sigh fell past his parted lips. Grantâs immediate response to his actions, without a doubt, reminded him as to why he missed his brother for all these years.Â
âSomeoneâs been hanging around dad a lot,â he remarked, mustering a half-smile on his end.Â
Even when hearing Grant mention he wasnât mad, the guilt festered. Despite Bobby Drakeâs warnings, Joey disregarded his word. There was more than enough reason to feel frustrated by the situation. âSeriously, Grant, I mean this when I say that should have never been my business in the first place. If you two decide to start dating or even hang out as friends, Iâll leave you two alone. Like we said before, weâre adults.â

[To Joey]: no itâs sakaiura beach in japan. you should go sometime jojo.
[To Joey]: btw iâm in SC rn. dick told me about what happened. you free later tonight or tomorrow?
Wally had seen Dick, Roy, and a few others already since they were his reason for suddenly appearing in the city, but now that he had that out of the way he figured it was okay to reach out to his other good friends. His own way of coping with Bruceâs death was to just not think about it and to focus on the others. If he could make them feel better then he felt better.
After a moment he sent another picture he had taken while in Japan, this one of monkeys in a hot spring that he had found completely hilarious. He was trying to distract himself from his dark thoughts⊠and also to hopefully cheer Joey up a bit.
In the back of his mind, one couldnât help but wonder what he had done to deserve friends like Wally. To know the Titans had accepted him, despite being Sladeâs son, was a feat in itself. He never blamed them. He would have had similar reservations.Â
His phone pinged again, noting a picture had been included with a few messages afterwards. Monkeys in the hot springs. Typical Wally to find this amusing. It almost coaxed a snort out of him, though itâs become harder to smile after his conversation with Dick all of those months ago.Â
Looking back at the messages, he typed his responses, pursing his lips.
[ To Wally ] japan, huh? maybe someday when iâm not busy with client requests.
[ To Wally ] you are? i can make time, considering most of my jobs arenât due for another two weeks. why?

âYou donât have to miss that part. If we did everything all over again? Iâd kick their asses even harder for what they put you through. Thereâs aspects to our childhood I wouldnât want to live through again ⊠Travis being one of those things.â Although the name doesnât linger on his tongue for much longer.
He glances over at the table. They can go sit down in a minute since it seems that they have more pressing matters to discuss. He certainly had a feeling but theyâve always been able to work through all of their disagreements. Any concerns that his little brother has will be listened to. Grant doesnât want to just sweep them under the rug at all.
âYou know I wonât let that happen again? Iâm not going anywhere. Iâm being more careful while Iâm out there. I promise you.â He reaches out to place a hand on Joeyâs shoulder to give it a gentle squeeze. âI wonât lie, I still have feelings for him. I canât easily make them go away ⊠ I donât know what would happen if we ever saw each other again.â He likes honesty so telling his brother the truth is important.
Hearing his brother speak elicited a slight tightness in the back of Joeyâs throat. The memories he once tried to suppress only resurfaced without further hesitation. His lips fought back a grimace with little resistance. He sucked in a sharp breath through his nostrils, nodding at Grant.
âActually,â he started, furrowing a brow when he felt the squeeze of Grantâs hand on his shoulder. âI ran into him a few weeks ago. I told him if he ever came near you again, Iâd take matters into my own hands. He got upset. Said something about planning to apologize to both of us, but then he got upset and told me to âgrow up.â That itâs your decision and not mine. He was right but I retaliated by tossing him against the wall.â
For a split second, the younger fell to silence, outstretching a free hand to touch his aforementioned shoulder. His frown deepened, blue eyes averting their gaze from his brother. The shame of his actions was evident in his expression and tone. âI havenât seen him since.â

Upon hearing another ping from his phone, Joey glanced at the device for the umpteenth time, tapping the notification screen. Another Wally text, as per usual. He reached for the device while waiting for the pot of water in front of him to come to a boil. When further inspecting the contents of the message, he couldnât help cracking a grin at the sight of another picture.Â
One could envy the abilities of someone like the Flash. Wally was no exception. Still, the thought of traveling at the blink of the eye, while fascinating, could be overwhelming for Joey. Heâs a man who prefers to savor the moments, at most. Still, the smile did not leave his expression while sending a response to his dearest friend.
[To Wally]: So whereâs this new picture from? A traverse around the Bahamas again?Â

Issac chuckled quietly. âReally? Well, thatâs a shame. I wouldâve had you bring him along - more the merrier and all that.â He remarked and leaned forward some. âIâm not shy.â He smirked one last time before leaning back in his seat and nodding at the assistantâs words. âYes. We have exchanged numbers and I guess if it just canât be helped, I donât really have a choice but to let you two run along, do I?â He pursed his lips in a playful pout.
âPerhaps next time youâll see him. Heâs a little shy and-â
A quick hand reached over to clamp over Kaylaâs mouth before she could finish the sentence. Kaylaâs assistant and her offending hand chuckled, mustering remnants of a grin at Issac. In the back of her mind, however, Joey bit back at curse, thinking he gave himself away or raised further suspicions by the action alone.
âSorry,â she chuckled. âWe really should get going. Our ride is waiting for us. Take care, Issac.âÂ
Fatal mistake number two, thought Joey. The womanâs heels paused before taking a full step, sucking in a breath in realization. Upon noticing the error, Kayla cleared her throat to interject. âI told you his name, honey. Relax. Letâs get going. Bye, Issac.âÂ
The women took one last glance at the man, waving their good-byes before making their way towards the elevator on the other end of the ballroom. Kayla glanced over at her assistant, outstretching a hand towards her backside, patting it gently.Â
Relax, Jojo, she signed. You did fine. We made progress without getting caught. Mission accomplished.

Grant listens to his younger brotherâs shaky breaths and his own concern sinks in. Maybe this is an old habit that lingers from when they were children. He remembers looking out for Joey when they went to school ⊠ never afraid to throw someone who was picking on him up against the lockers. These fights got him suspended a few times but always felt worth it at the time. Â
âI worry about you too but I feel as if maybe we worry about each other for different reasons.â Grant thinks about his next choice of words carefully. The apology is unexpected. âI forgive you since I can sense the sincerity in your voice. We are adults ⊠not those kids anymore, are we? Do you ever mess those days? When everything was more simple? My biggest worry used to be not sleeping trough my alarm so Iâd wake up on time for practice before school. Five in the morning was rough.â But worth it.
Grant takes a step into the apartment after Joey gestures form to follow him. âIâm thankful that weâre all in the same place. Itâs nice, you know? Iâm thankful that weâre all in good health.â He doesnât say it but thereâs especially thanks in order just for being alive again in general. âIt was a dump. Bullet holes everywhere ⊠you would have hated it.â
âSometimes,â he confessed, biting his lip. âMinus the other kids picking on me at school for not being able to talk. Thatâs besides the point, though.â
Joey waved a hand in the direction of the aforementioned table, scooting them far enough to allow both of them to sit at any moment. It had only been a few minutes and he didnât anticipate the food getting cold just yet. He turned his gaze back to Grant, furrowing his brows to further express his concerns.Â
âLook, Grant, I donât care if there ever comes a point where you have to tell me to back off, especially with, you know, that guy youâve been seeing. I just got scared because these mutants were telling me about his bad reputation in the city. The last thing I wanted was for you to get hurt.â
