“When did I ever say that? Alivia, I love you as a person. You know that. Our situations are too different. There were times we couldn’t even go out on the weekend because you were worried we’d get caught.” Peter felt horrible, but he felt horrible with her constantly. It was all really high highs and really low lows. “You’re not a snob. You’re just letting your situation control you. You don’t let it define you. If you did, I wouldn’t be here right now. And it makes me so sad because you’re so strong and kind. I want you to have the life you want. But there’s not much more I can do to help you than stand by and be supportive.”
Alivia felt so torn, right down in her gut she felt like she was being ripped apart. It was head and heart battling it out yet again, for what felt like the millionth time, but it never got any easier. “What about if I didn’t let my situation control me, what about if I didn’t stop us from going out on the weekend?” The woman offered, not even really knowing why. She wasn’t going to beg him to get back with her because the desperation it reeked of was just too embarrassing by this point. The men she’d driven away with her background were rising steadily, but she never entered into a relationship with someone unless she really felt something for them. These two had been together for a year, she’d loved him by the end of it without a doubt, that didn’t just go away overnight. “Be supportive of what though? Is it what you want, to just stand by and let things stay as they are? if it is that’s okay. You can tell me, i’m a big girl.” She smiled slightly, not reaching her eyes.

Peter just shook his head and shrugged. “I’m always working or studying or coaching or whatever it is I manage to squeeze into a day. I’m tired. I get grouchy and stressed out. And you’re from a world completely different from my own. Your world doesn’t want me. Your world wasn’t meant to include me. I’m the dirty secret and while that can be fun, it hurts. We’re like the positive ends of two magnets trying to be forced together. It doesn’t… work.” There was hesitation in his voice and he kept his sad eyes trained on her. “No matter how much we want it to.”
Alivia shook her head, refusing to listen to what he was saying because it just couldn’t be right, it couldn’t be the way the world worked because it wasn’t fair. It wasn’t fair on her, it wasn’t fair on him, it wasn’t fair on anyone. “My world doesn’t matter, what do people not understand about that, my world doesn’t define me. I’m more than that, i’m not just some rich....snob who won’t downtown because i’m scared I might see someone in...sweatpants...” The words came out in a rush of French, her eyes slightly wide, almost imploring him to believe her. Seconds later though she deflated, sitting back in the chair with a sigh. “It’s fine, i get it.”

Henry: I'm sorry. Is there anything I can do?
Henry: Honestly, probably not much, because I also got into a feud with the same person
Henry: Maybe I can cheer you up though? We could do something, maybe get a little bit of a distraction.
Henry: Lord knows I could use one too.
Alivia: Honestly Henry, I can't say I'm surprised. She'd argue with a dust bunny if she came across one. I'm was trying so hard to be nice. We were only there because I bought her flowers to apologize for something, something tiny. So tiny. She wouldn't even listen to me. She showed up determined to hate me, what kind of person has that much of an acrid soul?
Alivia: You know what, that sounds amazing. Yes, please. Are you okay? Do you want to talk about it?

Henry: A little birdie told me you recently got in a predicament with someone.
Henry: I know I'm not your first pick to talk to but

Alivia: News travels fast around here apparently, that didn't take long.
Alivia: I always want to talk to you Henry. You know that.
Alivia: honestly? I'm really annoyed. I'm angry. Really angry.

Preston was usually an observant person, but he couldn’t help but let his eyes wonder around this morning. The tragedy, although it shouldn’t have changed his outlook on anything, had shifted his perspective slightly. Everything seemed duller, the color of the sky, the smell of expresso, the laughter of kids who were with their parents getting morning coffee. He looked back at Alivia when she spoke, his frown only growing by the second. She looked terribly upset, and suddenly he felt the urge to comfort her, as if they were somehow in this together. “Hey….it’s sad, but there’s nothing either of us can do about it. Alright? It’ll be fine. I’m sure the cops are all over it, they probably have tons of leads.”
Alivia nodded, wanting to believe him, but after a second she felt her eyes spill over, tears starting to roll down her cheeks. “Oh i’m sorry, this is so silly.” She muttered, brushing them away as quickly as she could with her fingers only for them to be instantly replaced by more, she had no idea why it was effecting her quite so badly. He was being so nice, and she was feeling so terrible about it, the girl just wished there was something she could actually do to help. “I hope so, I hope they find the terrible person who’s done this. I’ll rip their head from their shoulders myself, an eye for an eye.’ Her voice was low but fiercely insistent in her words.

“ it’s pretty run of the mill to give repeat-customers a deal. but you don’t have to twist my arm if you want to pay more. ” hal smiles easily and extends his hand to finally shake the woman’s. “ i’m hal torres, and it’s a pleasure to meet you. ”
“I’m not going to twist your arm, it might hurt, but i’m also not going to let you give me a discount. That is final.” She smiled, shaking his hand gently with her own, finally feeling as though the two of them were off to a better start. “Hal, lovely to meet you, i’m Alivia Dambois.”

“Uhhh, France?” Preston repeated, his eyes widening a little bit at how casual she made the offer sound. A trip to France sounded nice, but there was no way he wanted to go for just a party. “Let’s try and stick to parties that are stateside. Maybe in the Los Angeles area,” he laughed lightly, shaking his head a little. He didn’t want to seem rude, the offer was nice and all, but he just couldn’t imagine agreeing to it.
“Yes, France. A lot of my parents parties happen in France since they live there.” She grinned, shrugging one shoulder, although as he said they should stick to Los Angeles the brunette nodded, not wanting to make anyone uncomfortable. “Oh of course, let’s stick to parties that are over here in the USA. Shall I let you know when the next one is?” Her smile was enthusiastic, the idea of having a friend come to the event with her a very attractive one. “The desserts are amazing. They’ll knock your socks off.”

Alivia: not okay enough for you to be getting some proper sleep. I get worried about you, you look so tired a lot of the time, it's not right.
Alivia: Okay, well i'm getting diet coke too because I don't understand you americans and your Dr Pepper. Doritos COOL RANCH, no point even considering anouther flavor!

Peter knew that just because things seemed to be going right, that wasn’t always a means to happiness. He knew that better than most. “I missed you too,” he said, slipping entirely into French so nobody would eavesdrop. He gently tapped the toe of his shoe against the toe of hers and then settled them against each other, pulling his hand back. “I always do.” He noted the forced pleasantness on her face and mindlessly scratched at his beard; he hated not being clean shaven. “But you know if we try again, it’s going to end the same way it always does, right? We never can make it more than two weeks at a time.”
Once Alivia heard him slip into french the woman did exactly the same, old habits die hard in her case, giving him a soft smile. Feeling his toe against her own the woman didn’t move it away, instead just letting Peter remove his hand, her own pulling back slightly although not all the way to her side. It was still extended on the table palm upwards. “I always miss you too.” Wondering how to phrase the next bit she bit her bottom lip, pulling it between her teeth before looking back up. “Why not though? I’m not disagreeing with you, I just....do you know why it never seems to work? It drives me to distraction.”

“I’m sorry that I care about you exploiting the people of France for your own benefit, clearly I need to work on caring less, but you should try the opposite.” Aurora shot back, twirling around to face her charges. “Who said anything about cutting yourself off? Change it from the inside! You are in a position of power, you can make changes, you can petition the government to stop wasteful spending on things like Christmas parties! You could convince other people that the status quo isn’t okay, just because this is the way it’s always been. Use your power to change things, instead of playing at being a hero to the less fortunate. What you’re doing is treating a symptom, when you have the power to cure the disease.” She retorted, rolling her eyes at Alivia’s unwillingness to see the obvious. She didn’t have to give up her position, but she should give up government money that made her family wealthy on the backs of the working people of France.
“How do you know i’m not doing that? You’re making all these assumptions about who I am and what I stand for but you don’t take the fucking time to try and find out if any of it’s true!” She was getting angry now, really angry. Alivia had never done anything but be nice to the redhead, but she seemed hellbent on hating her for some reason. “I’m not playing at being a hero, i’m training to be a fucking lawyer, i’m trying to make a difference but i’m a 26 year old trainee lawyer right now. No one is going to listen to me yet, you don’t even listen to me when i’m trying to have a conversation. I want to change things, but you’re being an asshole. Am I on the flight to France right now? No, i’m not, i’m here on my lunch break trying to convince someone who seems bitter from the inside out that i’m sorry for what I said to them. I was simply upset because I love my family, and I want to make them happy. I’m sorry my mother is so superficial, but she isn’t me. You just can’t be bothered to get to know me enough to see that. Stop pinning names on me I never even tried to apply to myself just to make you feel like your anger is justified. Because it’s not, don’t hate the player hate the fucking game. I didn’t write the rules, I don’t enforce the rules, I’m trying to change the rules. It’s not going to happen over night.”

“What I’m hearing is a lot of excuses.” Aurora retorted, picking up her iced coffee, she walked away. “You benefit from an unjust system, and instead of trying to change it, you came here to play at being a hero to the rabble. No wonder France had a revolution.” She rolled her eyes, walking away with her heels clicking on the linoleum floor.
“And what i’m hearing are a lot of none repressed bitterness issues, so you might want to work on that.” Alivia scoffed, shaking her head a little as the woman got up to leave yet again, refusing to engage in a civil conversation, she was starting to realize she probably just didn’t know how to engage in one at all. “Trying to change it how? You want me to cut myself off from my family is that it? Would that make you happy? Shun any financial help they give me, abdicate from any position I hold back home in France i’m assuming.”

“Working myself too hard? When have I ever?” Peter joked, but the smile faded from his face a bit when he saw the concern on her face. He took her hand in his and gave it a small, reassuring squeeze. “Je sais. Je saurai toujours que je peux venir à toi.”
He kept their hands connected when she started to speak, eyes flitting over her face for any sign of lying. He knew she wasn’t always the happiest. She never really told him, but he knew. He knew what she did and all he had been able to do was try to make her happy when he could. But he wasn’t even great at that. “You’re sure?”
“You missed the word ‘not’ from the end of that question Peter, when have I ever not is I think what you meant to say.” She smiled softly, noting how his smile faded and instantly feeling bad that she had caused that. “Je veux vraiment dire que.” The lawyer squeezed his hand back with her own, feeling herself relax ever so slightly because they seemed to have gotten over the tense moment that always prefaced their conversations.
Her smile faltered slightly, feeling his eyes searching her for any sign of what she was saying being untrue, and she wanted to be able to assure him honestly that she was but it would be a lie. Regardless Alivia nodded, forcing her look of happy relaxation once more. “I’m sure. Work is going really well, everyone is well back home. What have I got to complain about.” After a pause she sighed. “I missed you.”
